How artifacts work in CONTROL Resonant
Lead gameplay designer Sergey Mohov describes artifacts as “equippable items with passive modifiers that allow you to fine-tune your build.” Their effects can support combat, survivability, exploration, or resource use, and some pair a benefit with a condition or drawback. Remedy confirms three artifact slots during a first playthrough and a fourth in NG+, with artifacts carrying over between runs. Remedy’s NG+ explanation covers those system details.

Most artifacts in the current catalog are reported as Untapped Artifacts: collectible recipes that must be crafted before use. Gather the required materials and Source, then use the Artifact Formation station in the Gap. PlayStation also confirms that artifacts can be crafted there in its CONTROL Resonant features overview. The third-party guide reports that sources include missions, vendors, zone progression, Resonant bosses, and edition bonuses; it also says unwanted artifacts can be recycled at the station for materials and that two artifacts from the same family cannot be equipped together.

Compare an artifact’s benefit with its activation condition and cost, rather than choosing by the largest percentage alone. A bonus that only applies below a Health threshold, during Shift, after a perfect dodge, or near a summoned ally may fit one combat rhythm and do little in another. Remedy characterizes artifacts as situational modifiers, and the guide’s entries show both conditional bonuses and explicit downsides.
- For damage: Check the damage type and target. Fork boosts Sharp damage, Spray Paint boosts Blunt damage, while Bug Spray is specifically reported to increase damage against mold.
- For risky, low-Health play: Mother’s Locket rewards being below 25% Health, and Medical Alert Bands add Falter in that same low-Health range. These are conditional options, not universal recommendations.
- For survival and exploration: Resistance effects or reduced environmental-hazard and void-fall damage may be more useful when navigating dangerous areas than a narrow combat bonus.
- For resource flow: Consider whether Power recovery, a free next ability after a perfect dodge, or a reduced Command charge matches how you use abilities.
- Before equipping: Account for drawbacks such as increased damage taken, a Health cap, reduced Falter, or doubled Infected buildup, and check that another equipped artifact is not from the same family.
There is no substantiated single best artifact for every encounter in the available catalog: the value depends on your build, the enemies and hazards ahead, and whether you can reliably meet the item’s trigger.
