There is no source-backed universal best ability combination in CONTROL Resonant. Choose abilities around the job you want them to do—survive pressure, control a crowd, set up status effects, distract enemies with summons, or create an opening for melee and executions. The strongest plan is one that connects an ability’s effect to what you do next.
How abilities fit into a build
Remedy describes three build pillars: supernatural Combat Abilities earned by defeating Resonants, Aberrant weapon forms, and Talents that amplify synergy between abilities and melee attacks. Some Resonants offer branching choices, so not everything can be unlocked in one playthrough. Remedy’s PlayStation Blog overview describes the intended combat loop: melee hits restore Combat Ability resource, abilities can stun enemies and open execution opportunities, and executions temporarily increase melee damage.

That loop is a practical way to evaluate a combination. An ability might create a safe opening, apply a status effect, or keep enemies busy; the next step could be a melee attack or execution. A preview from Xbox Wire also showed both close-range combat and a more tactical setup using summons and turrets for crowd control. That is an example of a combat approach, not a measured ranking.
Which ability types work well together?
The combinations below are role-based options drawn from ability descriptions in the Epic Games Store guide. They are not a universal tier list.
#1 Best Overall
- STEP INTO A WARPED REALITY: Explore multiple areas of a ravaged Manhattan in an expansive, unfamiliar, and exciting world. Traverse perception-bending locations and grapple with gravity anomalies that distort the vertical and horizontal plane, adding additional dimensions to puzzles and new tactical decisions to combat. Meet faces old and new on a path fraught with risk but rich in opportunity as the cityscape is reshaped and reality is redefined by a godlike force.
- MASTER THE PARANATURAL: Channel the raw experiences of Dylan’s past to help understand his present and dig deeper into the inner workings of the FBC and reveal the horrors threatening humankind. Tap into power he must learn to master and take choices to shape how his abilities manifest and grow. Explore a deep progression system to define how Dylan adapts to emerging dangers. Forge connections crucial to Dylan’s fight to retain his humanity as he journeys from former test subject to paranatural superweapon
- THE FIGHT SHIFTS. YOUR WEAPON SHIFTS WITH IT: Meet constantly evolving threats head-on, utilising the environment, deploying elemental abilities and using the raw force Dylan’s shapeshifting melee weapon, the Aberrant. Wield the Aberrant in its many deadly forms. Deliver bone-crunching blows with a two-handed hammer and flow seamlessly into the swift precision of dual-wielded blades as this paranatural weapon morphs on demand to meet each new challenge.
- SHARED LEGACY. NEW THREAT: FBC Director Jesse Faden's lockdown is no longer holding. A paranatural catastrophe has spilled beyond the Oldest House and onto the streets of Manhattan, and the Bureau's grip on containment is failing. Jesse Faden walked into the Oldest House to confront the threat within. Now Dylan must walk out of it to contain the threat beyond.
Shield for defensive control
Shield absorbs damage and can enable a Shield Bash when you dodge. The guide recommends it for survivability and falter: an enemy stagger can create an opening for an execution. Consider this role if you need safer opportunities to get close, rather than treating Shield as the best choice for every fight.
Growth and Spike for summon pressure
Growth summons up to two worm-like allies that fire Mold globules. Spike summons an Astral Spike that attacks nearby enemies and can knock them down. Epic recommends pairing Growth with Spike so the summons occupy enemies while Dylan attacks. This is a summon-pressure option for players who want help controlling attention, not proof of a top-ranked build.
Rank #2
Ground Slam and Push for area control
Ground Slam deals area damage, while Push sends enemies flying—potentially into hazards or off ledges. Epic recommends Ground Slam in elevated environments because its damage increases with height. The advice depends on the arena: height and nearby hazards make these abilities more useful.

Mold and Astral abilities for status setup
Spore Burst and Growth apply Infected, which deals damage over time and explodes if its target also has Burn. Spike and Astral Rebuke apply Astralized, which enhances Burn and Infected buildup. A status-focused approach can therefore build toward Infected and use Burn to trigger its explosion, while Astralized helps build those effects. The guide provides no quantified damage comparison, so this interaction should not be read as a proven strongest combination.
Astral Rebuke for an aerial follow-up
Astral Rebuke erupts beneath enemies and launches them into the air, creating an opportunity for an aerial combo. It makes sense to pair it with a melee form or Talent that can capitalize on an airborne opening. The available sources do not establish a specific weapon pairing as the tested best option.

Rank #4
- RUST-PROOF ALUMINUM – BUILT TO LAST: Crafted from premium aluminum instead of ordinary tinplate, this metal wall decor develops a natural protective oxide layer that prevents rust, corrosion, and moisture damage. It stays pristine even in high-humidity areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor patios, far outlasting traditional tin signs that lose their shine and rust over time.
- HD UV PRINTING – VIVID & FADE-RESISTANT: Printed with industrial-grade UV curing technology for crisp details, vibrant color gradients, and exceptional ink adhesion. The ink chemically bonds to the aluminum surface, resisting scratches, sunlight, and daily wear. It stays bright and clear for years outdoors without peeling, cracking, or fading.
- PERFECT SIZE – LIGHTWEIGHT & STURDY: At 8 x 12 inches, roughly the size of a standard US letter sheet, this sign easily fills any blank wall while remaining eye-catching. The flexible aluminum bounces back from shipping bends or accidental dents—just straighten by hand with no creases left. Four pre-drilled mounting holes allow quick installation with nails, rope, or double-sided tape on any wall, fence, or door.
- PREMIUM METAL FINISH – VERSATILE DECOR: The smooth, polished aluminum surface delivers a high-end metallic look that elevates any space, far surpassing flat tin or iron signs. Ideal for man caves, garages, bathrooms, backyards, farmhouses, bars, and offices—also a durable, one-of-a-kind gift for vintage decor lovers.

- Need more safety? Consider defensive coverage such as Shield and the openings its falter can create.
- Want enemies occupied or displaced? Look at summon pressure from Growth and Spike, or displacement from Push.
- Prefer ranged pressure or close-range attacks? Compare how an ability lets you apply pressure at range with how readily it supports a melee follow-up.
- Want to build around status effects? Look for ways to apply Infected, Burn, and Astralized, and plan around the documented interaction between Infected and Burn.
- Does the ability support your resource rhythm? Remedy says melee hits restore Combat Ability resource, so consider whether you are willing to enter melee to replenish it and follow ability openings into executions.
- How much setup and positioning does it require? Ground Slam’s height-related damage makes the environment matter; other options may suit a more direct approach.
The sources establish ability functions and interactions, but do not provide controlled damage rankings or identify one combination as best across all encounters. The sensible choice depends on your intended role, the fight, what you have unlocked, and how comfortable you are maintaining melee pressure.
How progression changes your options
In a first playthrough, Resonant reward options can be mutually exclusive at the time you choose them unless you reset. The Epic guide also describes a later Resonant Token that grants an additional Combat Ability choice. Available combinations therefore depend on progression, not just preference.
New Game Plus adds flexibility. In a Remedy-authored PlayStation Blog article, Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov says NG+ carries over Aberrant upgrades, health and ability-resource improvements, unlocked supernatural Combat Abilities, Talents, and Artifacts. Traversal abilities remain tied to story progression. NG+ also opens new Talent nodes and lets players equip multiple different Combat Abilities from the same boss, enabling combinations that are unavailable in the same way during an initial run.
Adjust the challenge if a build feels difficult to use
If a combination makes sense on paper but is difficult to manage under pressure, Assist Mode offers ways to adjust the experience. Remedy Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov says players can change Enemy Aggression, Perfect Dodge Window, Enemy Projectile Speed, Incoming and Outgoing Damage, Outgoing Falter, Power Recovery Speed, and melee magnetizing. These options let you tune pressure, resource recovery, or melee access without needing to abandon the build idea. Mohov’s Assist Mode overview frames these settings as a way to keep playing when the friction becomes too much.
