Nanoleaf MCP lets compatible AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude control supported Nanoleaf lights through natural-language requests. To use it, connect Nanoleaf MCP in your chatbot’s settings, sign in to your Nanoleaf account, and keep the Nanoleaf Desktop App running on an awake computer. Nanoleaf says the integration can change lighting, manage Scenes and Playlists, and check device status; available features depend on your lights, firmware and AI platform.
What Nanoleaf MCP can do
Nanoleaf MCP is the connection between a Nanoleaf account and an AI platform that supports custom MCP connections. After setup, you can ask the assistant to turn supported lights on or off, change brightness or color temperature, check device status, and create, save or play Scenes and Playlists. Nanoleaf also lists control for Circadian Lighting and supported 4D, Screen Mirror and Sync+ features. The exact controls depend on the product, its firmware and the AI platform. Nanoleaf’s MCP page lists Shapes, Lines, Canvas, Elements, Skylight, 4D, Essentials and Smart LED Bulbs among the supported product families.

For example, Nanoleaf suggests asking, “Create a cozy Scene for movie night in the living room” or “Warm up my bedroom lights and dim them to 30%.” These are examples of requests, not guarantees that every product can produce the same result. A device can only do what its own hardware supports: Elements offers warm-to-cool white light, for instance, but not blue, while RGB-capable Shapes can display blue.
What you need before setup
- Nanoleaf lights from a supported product family, paired with your Nanoleaf account through the Nanoleaf Desktop App.
- Nanoleaf Desktop App version 3.0.0 or later. The app must remain open, and the computer running it must stay on while you use MCP.
- A chatbot application that supports custom MCP connections. Nanoleaf recommends using the desktop app for ChatGPT or Claude setup.
- Access to your Nanoleaf account so you can authenticate and approve the requested connection.
Nanoleaf MCP is free for Nanoleaf customers, according to the Nanoleaf FAQ. Your messages still count against the regular usage allowance for your AI assistant.

How to connect Nanoleaf MCP
- Open a compatible chatbot application. Nanoleaf recommends the ChatGPT or Claude desktop app for setup.
- Open the app’s Settings and look for Connectors or Plugins. The label and location can vary by platform.
- Add a custom MCP connection using Nanoleaf’s integration address: https://integrations.nanoleaf.me/mcp.
- Sign in to your Nanoleaf account and approve the requested MCP access.
- Install or open Nanoleaf Desktop App version 3.0.0 or later, and confirm your lights are paired.
- Leave the desktop app running and keep its computer on while you use the integration.
- Send a simple request, such as “Turn off my lights.” If the assistant reports that a device needs a firmware update, update it through the Nanoleaf app before continuing. Approve any action the chatbot asks you to authorize.
The Nanoleaf app remains part of the setup and upkeep: Nanoleaf says it is needed to pair devices and update firmware. MCP works alongside that app rather than replacing it. For the vendor’s setup guidance, see its integration page and launch article.
What to expect from requests
Natural language makes it possible to describe an outcome rather than select each light and setting manually. You can ask for a brightness or color change, request a Scene by name, or ask the assistant to create and save a Scene or Playlist. Nanoleaf says Scene types include Paint, Rhythm and Dynamic. The AI may need to ask a follow-up question if the room, device or desired setting is unclear.

Requests involving context beyond your lights—such as weather or calendar information—depend on whether the AI platform can access that information and whether you have authorized it. Nanoleaf MCP does not support creating schedules or routines. Circadian Lighting can be controlled, but that does not mean MCP can set up an automated schedule.

Compatibility and practical limits
- Only Nanoleaf devices: MCP controls Nanoleaf devices connected to the Nanoleaf account; it does not control other brands’ lights.
- Capabilities vary: Color range, effects and controls differ across models and firmware. A request outside a light’s abilities cannot make that device support the feature.
- Computer-dependent connection: The Nanoleaf Desktop App and its computer must remain available while you use MCP. If either is closed or the computer is off, the integration is not available.
- Platform-dependent setup: Chatbot settings and support for custom MCP connections vary. Nanoleaf’s guide uses the labels “Connectors” or “Plugins”; consult the platform’s current interface if those options are absent.
Privacy and account access
Nanoleaf says MCP reads your device list, device states, layouts and Scenes so the assistant can respond to requests. This can include details such as device names and current states. Nanoleaf says you authenticate directly with Nanoleaf and the assistant receives a secure access token rather than your Nanoleaf password. Review the access request in your chatbot and Nanoleaf account before approving it.
