On the Sharp VL-NZ8S/10S camcorder, it means recording a continuous still image; JVC used the related phrase “High-Speed Continuous Still Recording” for capturing multiple stills in rapid succession. The terms describe different behaviors, not one universal camera standard.
What does continuous still recording mean?
It can refer either to a still-image recording mode or, in a different implementation, to a rapid sequence of separate still images. The wording alone does not tell you which output a camera produces, so check the manual for the exact model and mode.

Sharp VL-NZ8S/10S: a continuous still image
The Sharp VL-NZ8S/10S Operation Manual distinguishes two still-recording modes. It defines STILL as “A continuous still image is recorded.” SNAP, by contrast, records a still picture for six seconds. The manual says STILL recording can be paused with REC START/STOP.

JVC’s 2013 Everio catalog uses the fuller label “High-Speed Continuous Still Recording” for taking stills in rapid succession, likening the feature to an SLR camera’s motor drive and associating it with fast action. The catalog identifies it with VX Series models. This is a different documented use of similar wording from Sharp’s continuous still-image mode.

How does it differ from multi-frame effects?
The Sharp manual also describes 9 FRAMES and 16 FRAMES effects made from pictures taken at intervals of one-eighth of a second. These are listed as separate effects; they should not be assumed to mean the same thing as the STILL mode.

These controls apply to the Sharp VL-NZ8S/10S; other cameras may use different controls or produce different output.

- Select a still-recording mode, such as STILL or SNAP.
- In recording standby, press the STILL button.
- Press REC START/STOP to record the displayed image. The manual also says still recording can be used during recording.
The manual cautions that picture quality in its still-recording function will be slightly lower than normal pictures.

How can you keep a stationary still-life shot steady?
For the Sharp camcorder, the manual says switching the MOTION menu item off can produce a clearer still-life image. With MOTION off, a moving subject can blur. It recommends attaching the camcorder to a tripod to prevent image shake; the tripod helps steady the camera but does not change its recording mode. Check that any tripod or adapter fits your camera’s mounting socket.

How can you tell what your camera means?
Look up the exact feature label in the manual for your camera model, then check whether the description says it records one still image, a still-like image over time, or multiple stills in succession. Do not infer the behavior from the phrase alone: the Sharp and JVC examples use related terminology for different outputs.
