A contactless payment lets you pay by holding a compatible card, phone, or wearable near a checkout terminal. Near-field communication (NFC) carries the short-range communication; EMV contactless specifications govern payment behavior. To pay, look for the contactless symbol, hold your payment method near the reader, and follow any confirmation or verification prompt. Contactless payments have security protections, but no payment method is risk-free, and the rules vary by issuer, network, terminal, device, and country.
What makes a payment contactless?
Instead of inserting a card into a reader or swiping its magnetic stripe, you present a compatible card or NFC-enabled phone or wearable close to the terminal. A contactless card contains a chip and antenna; a compatible reader communicates with it at close range. A mobile wallet or wearable presents a payment credential using the device’s NFC capability.

EMVCo describes both contactless chip cards and NFC-enabled mobile devices as ways to make in-store EMV contactless payments. NFC is the communication method, while EMV contactless specifications govern payment behavior. Contactless does not mean that the purchase bypasses the ordinary payment authorization process.
What happens when you tap?
- The reader detects the payment method. When you hold a supported card or device close to the terminal, the reader and payment method communicate over NFC.
- Payment information is exchanged. The payment system receives transaction data and routes the transaction for authorization. The details depend on the payment application, device, network, processor, and terminal.
- The payment is approved or declined. The terminal displays or otherwise communicates the result. It may ask for a PIN or another verification step.
Mastercard describes NFC as working over a distance of a few inches. That short range is a characteristic of the communication, not a guarantee of security by itself; payment protections also depend on transaction protocols, how credentials are handled, issuer controls, and device security.

How to tap to pay at a checkout
- Look for matching symbols. Check for the contactless indicator on your card and the contactless symbol on the terminal. If you are paying by phone or watch, make sure it has a supported payment method set up.
- Wait for the terminal’s prompt. Follow the checkout instructions and check that the amount displayed is the one you intend to pay.
- Hold your card or device near the indicated reader area. Reader placement varies. Visa advises holding a card flat over the symbol; a phone or watch may need to be positioned differently depending on the device and terminal.
- Wait for confirmation. Keep the card or device in place until the terminal indicates the result. Follow any PIN, unlock, or other verification prompt.
- Use another supported method if tapping fails. If the terminal does not accept contactless, try inserting the chip or another payment method the merchant supports. Visa says a contactless Visa card may also be inserted or swiped where tapping is unavailable.
Card, phone, or watch: what changes?
| Payment method | What you present | What may differ at checkout |
|---|---|---|
| Contactless card | The card’s chip and antenna communicate with the reader. | The terminal may request a PIN or another verification. If tapping is unavailable, the merchant may support chip insertion or, where applicable, a swipe. |
| Phone or wearable | An NFC-enabled device presents a payment credential. | The device may require its own unlock or verification, and the terminal or payment system may also request another step. |
Whether a payment method is accepted and whether verification is requested depend on the terminal, issuer, network, device, transaction circumstances, and local rules. There is no single contactless limit or universal rule that every tap is PIN-free.
What security protections does tap-to-pay use?
Contactless payments use payment-specific protections rather than relying on short range alone. Visa says each contactless transaction generates a transaction-specific, one-time code, which it describes as effective in reducing counterfeit fraud. Mastercard describes the EMV chip as encrypting account information. These are protections in the payment transaction; they do not mean every kind of payment fraud is impossible.

- Check the purchase amount on the terminal before authorizing the payment.
- Use a strong device passcode and the available screen-lock and account-security features on your phone or wearable.
- Enable transaction alerts if your card issuer offers them, and review account activity for charges you do not recognize.

Visa’s Zero Liability policy has stated terms and exclusions, including certain commercial and anonymous prepaid card transactions and transactions not processed by Visa. Visa directs cardholders to contact their issuer for details and to report unauthorized use promptly. Other cards, issuers, and transaction types may have different terms.

How common is contactless payment?
Contactless use has grown, but figures need to be read in context. Mastercard reported on March 10, 2025, that tap-and-go payments accounted for more than two in every three in-person transactions on Mastercard’s network globally. That is a statistic about in-person transactions on Mastercard’s network, not all payments worldwide.
Separately, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reported that the U.S. share of card payment volume using EMV chip cards rose from 2% in 2015 to 82% in 2021. That historical measure concerns EMV chip cards, not contactless payments alone.
