Neither wins outright. Contabo is the better fit if you can commit to a long term and want a large, fixed-price VPS that you administer yourself. AWS is the better fit if you want a bundled plan with room to grow into a wider cloud platform. The catch is that “AWS” is not one product. Compare Contabo with Amazon Lightsail for a plain VPS, and bring in EC2 only when you need its flexibility.
Figures below come from Contabo’s US pricing page and AWS documentation, checked on October 5, 2026. Prices change, so confirm them at checkout.

Compare the right AWS product
AWS describes Lightsail as a unified, fixed-price option. It covers virtual servers, load balancing, managed databases, containers, CDN, DNS and domain registration. EC2 is the more configurable service. It offers broader instance choices and scaling options, pay-per-use or commitment pricing, and outbound transfer billed by usage tier. The AWS decision guide was last updated September 29, 2026.

- Contabo vs Lightsail: the like-for-like comparison for a website, small app, game server or dev box.
- Contabo vs EC2: a comparison of architectures, not of VPS plans. EC2 is not a cheap-VPS substitute unless you cost the instance, storage, transfer and any attached services together.
What Contabo offers and what it costs
Contabo’s US pricing page lists these Cloud VPS plans. Each displayed price is for a 24-month term, not a month-to-month rate.
#1 Best Overall
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | SSD | Port | Displayed price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud VPS 4 | 4 | 8 GB | 100 GB | 200 Mbit/s | $5.28/month |
| Cloud VPS 6 | 6 | 12 GB | 200 GB | 300 Mbit/s | $7.20/month |
The same page lists Performance VPS variants with AMD EPYC vCPUs and NVMe storage, also priced against a 24-month term. Tax presentation, configurations and availability vary, so check the total at checkout for your region.
The “unlimited traffic” caveat
Contabo says incoming traffic is unlimited and unmetered. Its fair-use terms expect typical server workloads and allow throttling for exceptionally high or disruptive use. Read it as generous, not unconditional. If you plan to push sustained heavy outbound traffic, such as video delivery, read those terms first.
Rank #2
Management
Contabo’s documentation describes its hosting as unmanaged. You handle OS updates, firewalling, security hardening, monitoring and backup strategy.

What Lightsail offers and how it bills
Each Lightsail bundle combines vCPUs, memory, SSD storage and a monthly transfer allowance. AWS bills hourly up to the monthly plan maximum. That means a short-lived instance costs less than a full month, while a long-running one stops accruing at the cap. Bundle prices and transfer allowances depend on the bundle, OS and region. Take the exact figure for your region from AWS’s current bundle page rather than from a roundup, including this one.

How to make the comparison fair
- Match the billing horizon. Contabo’s low displayed rate assumes a 24-month commitment. Compare it with Lightsail’s cost for the same period, and note that a shorter Contabo term may cost more per month.
- Match the region. Lightsail allowances vary by region, and the Contabo prices cited here are from the US page.
- Match the OS and extras. Include operating system licensing, extra IPv4 addresses, additional storage and backups.
- Estimate real transfer. Work out your monthly outbound GB, then compare it with the Lightsail allowance and with Contabo’s fair-use language.
- Don’t equate vCPUs. Four vCPUs on one platform are not guaranteed to perform like four on another. Benchmark your own workload on a short-term instance before committing.
Which should you choose?
Choose Contabo if
- You can commit to the listed term and want the most resources for a predictable displayed monthly price.
- You are comfortable administering a Linux or Windows server yourself.
- Your traffic is ordinary server traffic and sits comfortably within fair use.
Choose Lightsail if
- You are running a conventional website or small application and want a simple bundled plan.
- You want to add a load balancer, managed database, CDN or DNS from the same console.
- You want hourly billing, so a short test doesn’t lock you into a long term.
Choose EC2 if
- You need instance types, scaling behavior or service integrations that fixed bundles don’t offer.
- You are building an architecture, not renting a single server, and will cost the whole stack.
What this comparison can’t tell you
This is a comparison of published plans and documentation, not hands-on testing. It makes no claim about measured speed, uptime or support responsiveness. Those are the things most worth testing yourself, ideally with a short-term deployment of your real workload before you sign a 24-month term.
