After that, pick the type of toy that suits how they play: character engines, track add-ons, or a portable playset. Take-n-Play is a specific Thomas & Friends range, not a general name for every Thomas train toy. Mattel’s support catalog lists its engines, track and playsets. No published test results, ratings or sales rankings exist for the range, so this guide ranks nothing and tested nothing. It gives you the criteria to choose by.
What Take-n-Play is
The Strong’s archival finding aid for Fisher-Price records that the company renamed the earlier Ertl “Take Along” die-cast train line as Take-n-Play and added train playsets. The Strong dates its collection of related design documents to 2010–2011 and says it was processed in December 2013. The line is therefore older, and most of what you find now will be secondhand or leftover stock.

Mattel’s support catalog shows how broad the range is. It includes individual engines such as Stafford, Scruff, Dart and Belle. It also includes playsets and environments such as Bridge, Crocodile Special, Salty at the Docks, Sodor Engine Wash and Diesel Steamworks, plus various track products. That catalog is a support listing. It shows what existed, not what is in stock today.
Check compatibility before anything else
Mattel’s Fisher-Price product FAQ states: “The engines and track from Thomas Trackmaster, Take ‘n Play/Adventures, Wooden Railway, and Geotrax products are NOT compatible with each other.” In practice:
#1 Best Overall
- Sturdy die-cast construction
- Magnets let you attach other engines or tenders
- Works on Take-n-Play tracks
- Great addition to Thomas and Friends collection
- Helps develop gross motor skills, sensory skills & reasoning skills
- Work out which system your child’s existing trains and track belong to.
- Buy add-ons only from that same system, and check the exact product name on the listing.
- Do not assume that anything with Thomas on the box will connect.
Even inside Take-n-Play, compatibility is not guaranteed. Mattel’s instruction sheet for the Portable Railway (model Y3019, ©2012) says it can be attached “to other Take-n-Play track and playsets (sold separately)” but also warns: “May not work with all engines.”
Choosing by product type
Character engines
An engine is the cheapest way to add variety, and it suits children who mostly want to collect and play with favourite characters. Make sure it is a Take-n-Play engine, since the compatibility rule above applies to engines as well as track.
Track packs and add-ons
Track extends an existing layout. It is the least forgiving purchase for compatibility, so match it to the system you already own.

Playsets and environments
Sets such as Bridge, Sodor Engine Wash, Diesel Steamworks or Salty at the Docks add a scene to play in rather than just a route. The catalog names them but, in what Mattel’s pages document, does not describe their moving features. Check the listing or the original instructions for the specific features of the one you are buying, and do not assume features from the name.
Rank #3
- Includes die-cast metal Thomas
- Features plastic connectors to attach engines to cargo cars or tenders (sold separately and subject to availability)
- Thomas is in his original colour and design
Portable playsets
The Portable Railway (Y3019) is the documented example. Mattel’s instructions show it folding for storage and carrying with a handle, and connecting to other Take-n-Play track and playsets. That makes it a reasonable pick for travel or tidy storage, but those features are confirmed only for this set, not for the whole range.
Buying checklist for older items
Because most Take-n-Play products are now secondhand or old stock, this is prudent buying advice. It is not drawn from any source’s verification of a seller.
Rank #4
- Collectible die-cast train engine
- Special edition Thomas engine decorated with race car designs.
- Sturdy die-cast construction
- Magnets let you attach other train engines or tenders
- Works on Take-n-Play train tracks (sold separately and subject to availability)
- Exact model: match the name or model number (for example, Y3019) to the photos.
- Completeness: confirm that all track pieces and any accessories are included.
- Condition: look for cracks, worn connectors and, on engines, damaged couplings or wheels.
- Return terms: prefer sellers who accept returns, since compatibility can only be confirmed once the pieces are in hand.
If you want a currently listed Thomas system
Mattel’s current Thomas & Friends collection offers Die-Cast and Motorized Trains that use Easy Connect plastic track. Mattel says wood track does not connect with Easy Connect. Nothing Mattel publishes establishes that Easy Connect works with Take-n-Play, so treat it as a separate system. It suits families starting fresh rather than expanding an existing Take-n-Play layout. Mattel’s catalog can change, so check what is listed before you plan around it.
