That is not a guarantee that every VPS can stream to YouTube continuously without restriction. Check the terms and port speed for your specific plan, estimate the stream’s monthly traffic, and test the actual route before relying on it. This policy summary reflects Contabo’s currently published guidance checked in 2026.
What Contabo’s bandwidth policy means for a 24/7 stream
Contabo’s Help Center says there is no default bandwidth limit for its VPS, VDS, and dedicated server products, while also saying its fair-use policy applies. The provider reserves the right to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage. Its current wording does not establish a specific monthly allowance or promise that a persistent YouTube stream will be exempt from review. Contabo’s bandwidth and traffic limits guidance is the best starting point, but your order terms and the terms for your exact plan remain important.
Contabo’s product documentation presents traffic as unlimited for the listed plans subject to fair use and shows port speeds that vary by plan. A headline such as “unlimited traffic” should therefore not be read as unlimited guaranteed throughput or an assurance that every sustained workload is acceptable. The documentation displays VPS port rates from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps; verify the current figure, location, and conditions for the plan you intend to buy. Contabo Product Documentation
The official pages reviewed do not publish a guaranteed Contabo-to-YouTube throughput, an uptime guarantee for a continuous YouTube stream, or explicit authorization specifically for 24/7 YouTube streaming. A port-speed figure alone cannot establish that a stream will remain stable.

Port speed, stream bitrate, and monthly traffic are different
Port speed is the server connection’s advertised capacity
A port speed, measured in Mbps, describes the nominal rate available at the server network interface. It is not a promise of end-to-end speed to YouTube. Route quality, packet loss, shared resources, and other network conditions can affect the usable upload rate.
Bitrate is the stream’s data rate while it is running
Bitrate, also measured in Mbps, is how much encoded audio and video the stream sends per second. YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 50 Mbps for 4K60. These are YouTube encoder-setting recommendations, not measurements of a Contabo route. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Traffic is the accumulated data transferred over time
A continuous stream can use a modest fraction of a port’s advertised capacity at any instant and still transfer a large amount of data over a month. For a rough decimal estimate, multiply bitrate in Mbps by seconds, then divide by 8 and by 1,000 to get GB. The table applies that arithmetic to YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations; it is not a provider meter reading or a Contabo/YouTube published traffic figure.
| H.264 example | Approx. data per hour | Approx. data per day | Approx. data over 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 at 14 Mbps | 6.3 GB | 151 GB | 4.5 TB |
| 1080p60 at 17 Mbps | 7.65 GB | 184 GB | 5.5 TB |
Actual totals can differ because of audio and protocol overhead, reconnects, other server traffic, or a bitrate that varies over time. If the VPS relays rather than encodes the stream, identify which traffic direction crosses that VPS and whether viewer playback traffic is served through it; do not assume the outbound total from one stream describes every architecture.

How to judge whether a particular VPS is suitable
- Confirm the exact plan terms. Check the plan’s port speed, location, traffic language, and fair-use conditions in the current product documentation and your order. If continuous streaming is central to your use, ask Contabo support how the terms apply to your specific plan and workload.
- Choose the intended stream settings. Match codec, resolution, and frame rate to YouTube’s published recommendations. Do not compare a generic resolution label with the server port rate; use the actual target bitrate, including audio and any other traffic.
- Estimate transfer for the planned schedule. Use the bitrate math above with your expected hours per day and days per month. Include other workloads on the same server, and leave room for variation rather than treating the estimate as an allowance.
- Test the real stream path before depending on it. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate, checking that total stream bitrate fits available upload bandwidth, and monitoring stream health during the event. A speed test is a preflight check, not proof of 24/7 reliability. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the settings and testing approach.
- Separate network capacity from encoding capacity. If the VPS encodes video, CPU capacity and encoder load matter independently of bandwidth. If it only relays a stream encoded elsewhere, establish which traffic crosses the VPS before estimating its load.
How to interpret Contabo’s older traffic schedule
Contabo’s older post, “Rules for Traffic With Contabo,” dated September 4, 2024 and last updated April 10, 2025, described traffic tiers of 10 TB, 32 TB, 81 TB, 162 TB, 243 TB, and 324 TB, with reduced port speeds after traffic exceeded the applicable package for ten consecutive days. That dated schedule conflicts in framing with the current Help Center’s “no default bandwidth limit” wording and its discretionary fair-use description. Treat the post as historical or potentially product-specific context, not a universal rule for all current VPS plans. Check your own contract and get confirmation from Contabo for your account. Contabo’s traffic rules post
Common assumptions that can lead to a bad plan choice
- “The port is faster than my bitrate, so it will never drop.” Advertised port speed does not guarantee an end-to-end route, stable delivery, or uptime. Test the route and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- “Unlimited means no fair-use review.” Contabo’s current guidance pairs its no-default-limit statement with fair-use terms and discretionary action for exceptional or disruptive usage.
- “A speed test proves a month of stability.” A test measures conditions at that time. It does not establish long-term route quality or continuous-stream reliability.
- “The 2025 ten-day schedule is the current rule for every plan.” Current support wording does not repeat that fixed schedule. Confirm which terms govern your plan rather than applying the older figures to it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating and maintaining your own VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream loops from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
