Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Freezing is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the right next step depends on whether the whole PC locks up, whether Windows starts, and whether the problem began after a change.
Why does my Windows 11 PC keep freezing?
There is no single cause established for “constant freezing.” The symptom can accompany software conflicts, driver or update problems, limited storage, or other issues, but a checklist cannot identify a failing component remotely. Microsoft groups freezing with other unexpected behavior and recommends choosing recovery options according to the situation and their potential impact.

Before troubleshooting, note what happens: does the entire PC stop responding or only one app? Do you need to force a restart? Does it freeze during startup, after sign-in, or during a particular task? Did the problem begin after a Windows update, driver change, or new hardware? Does a blue screen or stop code appear? These details help you choose what to test next.

Back up important files before recovery
Save work and make a copy of important files before using recovery options. Microsoft warns that some options can cause data loss; its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance describes copying files to a USB drive. See Microsoft’s overview of Windows recovery options and Windows Update troubleshooting.

Try low-disruption checks first
- Check for Windows updates. Install available updates, then see whether the freeze returns.
- Inspect Device Manager. Look for devices marked with an error, especially if the problem started after adding hardware or changing a driver.
- Review recent changes. If a new device or driver coincided with the freezes, consider whether the issue changes when that device is disconnected or the driver is addressed.
- Check storage and startup load. Microsoft’s performance guidance identifies limited storage and too many startup apps as possible contributors to poor performance. They are worth checking, but do not prove the cause of a particular freeze.
Microsoft recommends checking updates, Device Manager, and recent hardware changes in its guidance for unexpected restarts and stop codes. Its rule of thumb in that context is to have 10% to 15% of drive space free, while noting that exact requirements vary by system configuration; this is not a universal threshold or a diagnosis of freezing. See Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance.
Compare normal startup with Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of services and drivers. If the PC does not freeze in Safe Mode but does in normal startup, that narrows the investigation toward something not loaded in the limited mode; it does not identify the specific culprit.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Open Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen.
- Use the PC long enough to see whether the same freezing pattern returns, then restart normally to leave Safe Mode.
Windows may show slightly different labels depending on build and device configuration. Follow Microsoft’s Startup Settings instructions for entering and exiting the mode.
Use a clean boot to test background software
Microsoft describes a clean boot as a way to start Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs so background software conflicts are easier to identify. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent fix.

- Sign in with an administrator account. Open System Configuration by searching for System Configuration from Start.
- In the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining services you are testing.
- Open Task Manager’s Startup apps section and disable the startup items you are testing. Record what you changed.
- Restart and check whether the freeze recurs. If it stops, re-enable services and startup items in groups, restarting and testing between groups to isolate a conflict.
- When testing is complete, restore normal startup by re-enabling the items you disabled.
A clean boot temporarily removes some functionality. On a managed computer, network policy may prevent these steps; Microsoft also advises using System Configuration’s advanced boot options only with guidance from a support engineer. See Microsoft’s clean boot instructions.
Choose the next step based on what you observe
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only one app freezes | The symptom may be limited to that app rather than a whole-PC lockup. | Record the app and task involved; avoid treating this alone as proof of a Windows-wide problem. |
| Windows is stable in Safe Mode but freezes during normal startup | A service, driver, or startup component not loaded in Safe Mode may be involved. | Use a clean boot to test third-party background software. |
| The freeze began after new hardware, a driver change, or an update | The timing makes that change relevant to investigate, but does not prove it caused the issue. | Check Device Manager and Microsoft’s stop-code guidance if there is also an unexpected restart or blue screen. |
| Windows will not start, or freezes continue after these checks | Built-in recovery may be needed; its options vary in how much they change or remove. | Back up if possible, then review Microsoft’s recovery guidance and select the least disruptive applicable option. |
Escalate to Windows recovery carefully
If the PC starts but remains unstable after the checks above, review Microsoft’s recovery options and their effects before choosing one. Back up first whenever possible; recovery steps can affect files or installed apps. If Windows cannot start, WinRE includes startup and recovery tools and may appear automatically after repeated startup failures. See Windows recovery options and Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment overview.

If a blue screen or stop code accompanies the freezing, write down the code and follow the stop-code-specific advice rather than treating it as an ordinary lockup. Persistent freezes that remain after built-in checks may warrant help from the PC manufacturer or a repair professional, particularly when Windows cannot start reliably.
