But its broader camera hardware and design remain familiar, and the 211g phone starts at $1,199 in the US. For iPhone 17 Pro owners, the changes may not justify the cost; owners of an iPhone 15 Pro or older have a more compelling case to upgrade.
What’s new in the iPhone 18 Pro?
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 2026, with availability starting September 18. Its headline changes are a variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera, the A20 Pro chip, a next-generation vapor chamber, a smaller Dynamic Island and improved battery life. Apple calls the Pro Max battery improvement the largest ever for an iPhone; that is Apple’s characterization, not an independent comparative test. Apple’s announcement also describes improvements in camera, performance and intelligence.

The overall formula is familiar. Smartprix reviewer Mehtab Ansari describes much of the camera hardware as largely unchanged from the iPhone 17 Pro, with variable aperture as the most notable camera addition. In other words, this is an update with a useful new camera control and internal changes, not a wholesale redesign.
How good is iPhone 18 Pro battery life?
Apple’s controlled-test claim
Apple rates the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback; the eSIM-only Pro Max is rated for up to 45 hours. These are Apple test claims, not promised everyday runtimes or screen-on-time figures. Apple says its battery work used preproduction devices and software on LTE and 5G networks with a representative usage profile. Its video playback test repeated an HDR movie under controlled settings. Actual battery life varies with use, configuration, signal and other conditions. See Apple’s battery-test notes.

What one reviewer found
Ansari says he used a retail-purchased review unit as his primary phone for over a week on Airtel in Hyderabad and found its battery life excellent. That real-world account is useful context, but it is one reviewer’s experience, not a standardized test or a prediction of how long the phone will last for every owner. Smartprix’s review does not establish a standardized method for the “10-hour battery life” figure shown in its quick verdict, so that number should not be treated as a comparable runtime benchmark.
Does the new camera make a difference?
The 48MP Fusion Main camera’s variable aperture can adjust how much light reaches the sensor and affect depth of field. Smartprix notes that this flexibility can help with close-up subjects such as documents or objects. It is the clearest new camera control, but it does not mean the entire camera system has been rebuilt.
In Ansari’s assessment, video and predictable color and exposure are strengths. He also identifies telephoto reach, low-light detail, flare and ghosting as limitations. These are the reviewer’s judgments, rather than universal results for every scene or user. If you value control over depth of field and shoot video often, the main-camera change may matter; if your priority is longer telephoto reach or low-light detail, the review gives less reason to expect a major leap over the previous Pro.

What does the iPhone 18 Pro cost?
Prices depend on the country and storage tier; the US and India figures below are separate market prices, not a direct exchange-rate comparison. Apple’s US starting price is $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max, each with 256GB. Smartprix reports these India prices for the Pro and says its 256GB starting price is roughly ₹30,000 more than the iPhone 17 Pro in India; that comparison is Smartprix’s, not a universal price-hike estimate.
| Market and source | 256GB | 512GB | 1TB | 2TB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US — Apple | $1,199 | not stated by Apple in the cited pricing | not stated by Apple in the cited pricing | not stated by Apple in the cited pricing |
| India — Smartprix | ₹164,900 | ₹189,900 | ₹239,900 | ₹314,900 |
Apple lists US configurations at 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, and advertises trade-in credits and carrier offers. The final price from those offers depends on device eligibility, carrier and conditions; do not assume a quoted credit applies to every buyer. Apple’s announcement has its US pricing and offer details.
Design, weight and what’s in the box
Apple lists a 6.27-inch measured display diagonal, 211g weight, aluminum unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 front and Ceramic Shield back. The rounded-corner display area is smaller than the stated diagonal. Finishes are black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Apple says the phone was tested to IP68 under IEC 60529 at a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Water resistance is not permanent and may decline with wear; liquid damage is not covered under warranty. The full specifications are on Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications page.

The box contains the phone and a one-meter USB-C charge cable, but no power adapter or EarPods. Apple recommends a compatible USB-C adapter, so you need to buy one only if you do not already have a compatible charger. Apple’s specifications page lists the box contents.

Should you upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro?
The value depends on what you own, what you want from the camera and how the local price compares with your budget. Smartprix recommends considering the phone for owners of iPhone 15 Pro or older, while suggesting iPhone 17 Pro owners may find the changes too modest. That is the reviewer’s recommendation, not a rule for every buyer.
- Consider upgrading from an older Pro if your current phone’s battery condition or performance is holding you back, or you will make regular use of variable aperture and video capabilities.
- Think carefully if you own an iPhone 17 Pro: the main camera gains variable aperture, but Smartprix describes most other camera hardware as familiar.
- Compare the actual price you will pay at your storage tier, including only trade-in or carrier offers for which you qualify.
- Try the size and weight in person if possible if 211g would make daily carrying or one-handed use uncomfortable.
- Check software availability where you live if Apple’s intelligence features are part of your buying decision. Apple says Siri AI is in beta with iOS 27 and initially unavailable in the EU; supported languages and features vary.
Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak called it “the best Pro iPhone we’ve ever made” in the launch announcement. That is Apple’s promotional view; the more practical buying question is whether its battery, variable-aperture camera and other changes address needs your current phone does not.
