The bigger decision is whether you and the people you share with can manage the reduced storage and loss of paid features when the subscription expires. Before confirming, check the renewal or expiry date, who bills you, household usage, and whether anyone still needs desktop Office apps.
What happens when you cancel Microsoft 365 Family?
For subscriptions managed by Microsoft, cancellation normally turns off renewal; benefits remain available through the current billing period unless local law or the purchase terms say otherwise. Check the date shown on your Microsoft account subscriptions page. If the page offers “Turn on recurring billing,” Microsoft says the subscription is already set to expire on the date displayed.

Cancellation affects the subscription owner and everyone using shared benefits. Microsoft Family owners can share benefits with up to five other people. When the subscription expires, shared subscription benefits end for those members too; their files remain intact, but the desktop Office apps lose full functionality. They can view and print files, but cannot edit or create new files using the expired subscription benefits.

Check storage before you cancel
Microsoft’s cancellation guidance says that after cancellation the free allowances are 5 GB of cloud storage covering OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments, plus 15 GB of Outlook.com storage. These are separate allowances. Check the storage used in each affected Microsoft account, including accounts belonging to people you share with.

If an account is over its applicable free allowance, Microsoft says the user may be unable to upload, edit, or sync new OneDrive files and may be unable to send or receive Outlook.com email. Microsoft may delete OneDrive and its files after six months if the account remains over quota. Download important files and keep a separate copy before the subscription ends if you need to reduce storage use; an external drive is one possible place for that copy, not a cancellation requirement.
Check which Family storage change applies to you
Microsoft has announced a transition to pooled storage for Family subscriptions. Its current guidance says new and upgraded Family subscriptions include a 2 TB shared pool starting October 8, 2026. Existing subscribers generally move to pooled storage after their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027. Microsoft says files remain private by default.

Those dates describe an announced plan change, not necessarily the terms currently applying to every subscriber. Check your account’s plan details and subscription history to see which storage arrangement applies to you. Regardless of the transition, assess each household member’s storage needs before ending shared benefits.

If Microsoft is the seller, manage cancellation on the Microsoft account subscriptions page. If you bought the subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play, Microsoft directs you to the respective provider for cancellation and refund handling. Use the account or store where the subscription is managed, and verify the expiry date shown there.

Make the decision against your actual household needs
Compare keeping the plan, cancelling and relying on free accounts, or switching to another Microsoft plan. A lower-feature plan may preserve some paid functionality, but Microsoft says switching to a plan with fewer features requires cancelling the current subscription and buying the other plan. Confirm current offer terms and seller instructions before making a change.
Quick Recap
Best Value
| Choice | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Keep the current Family plan | Whether the household uses shared benefits enough to justify the renewal cost and date shown in the account. |
| Cancel and use free accounts | Whether each affected person can fit within the stated 5 GB cloud allowance and 15 GB Outlook.com allowance, and whether anyone needs full desktop Office editing or creation. |
| Switch to another Microsoft plan | Whether its features fit your needs; check the current offer and seller instructions. Microsoft says a move to a plan with fewer features involves cancelling the existing subscription and purchasing the other plan. |
Before you confirm, work through this checklist:
- Identify whether Microsoft, Apple, or Google manages billing.
- Record the renewal or expiry date displayed in the managing account.
- List everyone using shared benefits and ask what they rely on.
- Check OneDrive and Outlook storage for each affected account against the post-cancellation allowances.
- Save a separate copy of files you cannot risk losing, especially if an account is over quota.
- Decide whether you or another household member still needs desktop Office apps to edit or create files.
