A Fitbit can sync with an iPad when the tablet’s iPadOS version and the Fitbit model are both supported and the Fitbit is set up through the Google Health app. Google’s setup requirements list Apple iOS 16.4 or higher and say the app works on most phones and tablets, but that wording does not guarantee that every iPad or every Fitbit model will work. If a sync fails, the problem is usually one of four things: another device is holding the Fitbit’s connection, Bluetooth or internet access is off, a permission is blocked, or the Fitbit needs a charge or update. The steps below work through those in the order that causes the least disruption.
Check compatibility before you set up
Compatibility is the first question because it decides whether the rest of the steps matter. Google’s current requirements page lists iOS 16.4 or higher for the Google Health app. Tablets are covered by the general statement that the app works on most phones and tablets, and Google also notes that some devices can have compatibility issues. Because the Fitbit model is not specified here, check the setup flow for your exact model before you start.
- Confirm your iPad is running iPadOS 16.4 or later (Settings > General > Software Update).
- Confirm the Google Health app is installed and up to date from the App Store.
- Confirm the Fitbit has charge and is close to the iPad during setup.
- Confirm you can sign in to the Google account you plan to use for the Fitbit.
Google’s help pages do not show a publication date in the versions reviewed for this guide, so treat the version numbers above as the current minimum at the time of writing and check the requirements page again if your iPad is older.
Set up the Fitbit through Google Health, not Bluetooth settings
Google specifically advises against pairing a Fitbit from the iPad’s Bluetooth screen. Pairing that way can leave the Fitbit in a state the app does not recognize. Use the app’s own setup flow instead:

Why sync fails: the host-device problem
Most sync failures trace back to a single rule in Google’s sync troubleshooting: a Fitbit can only sync with one device at a time. If a phone, another tablet, or a Mac is still paired to the Fitbit or is signed into the same account, the iPad may show the device as available but never complete a sync. Before troubleshooting the iPad itself, check for other devices in the same room or the same household that have the Google Health app or an active Bluetooth connection to the Fitbit.

When you find a competing device, remove the Fitbit from it or sign that device out of the account. Then retry the sync on the iPad. Keeping two devices active at once is the most common reason a sync that worked earlier stops working after a second device is set up.
Basic conditions that must be true
- Proximity: the Fitbit should be near the iPad during the sync. Google’s guidance also recommends keeping the host device and Fitbit close when a connection is unstable.
- Bluetooth: Bluetooth must be on in iPadOS.
- Internet: the iPad needs Wi-Fi or cellular internet access. A Fitbit can record activity without internet, but the sync to your account depends on it.
- App permissions: in iPadOS Settings, under the Google Health app entry, check that Bluetooth, Background App Refresh, and Cellular Data are all allowed. Blocking any one of them can stop background sync.
- Battery: charge the Fitbit before retrying. A low battery can prevent a connection from completing.
- Updates: install available updates for iPadOS, the Google Health app, and the Fitbit’s firmware.
Fixing a failed sync, in order
Work through these steps in sequence and stop once the sync completes. The early steps change nothing permanently; the later ones remove a pairing and need you to set the Fitbit up again.

- Restart the iPad. After it restarts, confirm it has Wi-Fi or cellular internet, then check for updates to iPadOS, Google Health, and the Fitbit firmware.
- Check app permissions and charge. Verify the Bluetooth, Background App Refresh, and Cellular Data settings described above, and charge the Fitbit.
- Forget the Fitbit and pair again. In iPadOS, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information icon beside the Fitbit, and choose Forget This Device. Reopen Google Health, follow the setup flow, and approve pairing when prompted.
- Use Google’s official removal and reconnect steps, or contact Google support. If the Fitbit still will not sync after the pairing is reset, follow the removal instructions in Google’s help pages for your model, or contact Google support.
Reinstalling the Google Health app is a later step, not a first one. Google’s update troubleshooting places it after the restart, permission, and pairing checks, because reinstalling does not fix a conflicting connection on another device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the official sources establish, and what they do not
The guidance above comes from Google’s Help Center pages on setup requirements, iPhone and iPad sync troubleshooting, and update troubleshooting. These sources establish the minimum iOS version, the setup path, the one-device rule, the basic conditions, and the escalation order. They do not publish success rates for any step, and they do not list which iPad models are confirmed to work with each Fitbit model. If your iPad is on an older iPadOS version or your Fitbit is a model not listed in the setup flow, the answer to whether it will sync is only available inside the app and the Google support pages for that model.
