Check whether your Outlook account is eligible
Claude’s native Outlook connection is part of its Microsoft 365 connector. It is intended for a Microsoft 365 work or school account connected to an Entra tenant—not a personal Microsoft account. Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 connector setup guide specifically excludes personal @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, and @live.com accounts.

If you use one of those personal addresses, the native setup below will not connect that inbox. Do not confuse the Outlook app or address with an eligible Microsoft 365 work or school account; eligibility depends on the account and organization behind the mailbox.
What your organization must enable first
A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator must provide one-time consent for the tenant. If your Claude organization is on Team or Enterprise, a Claude Owner must also enable the Microsoft 365 connector for the organization. Anthropic outlines these requirements in its setup documentation.

Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to confirm tenant consent and, for Team or Enterprise, ask your Claude Owner to enable the connector. If Microsoft 365 is missing from Claude’s connector list or the sign-in flow will not authorize you, these organization-level settings are a likely reason.
Connect Outlook to Claude
- In Claude, open Customize > Connectors.
- Find Microsoft 365 and select Connect.
- Sign in with the eligible Microsoft 365 work or school account and complete Microsoft’s authorization flow.
- Test the connection with a specific request, such as asking Claude to find a named email thread or a calendar detail. Check that it returns the item you intended.

What Claude can do with Outlook
Search and analyze email and calendar information
The connector supports Outlook email search and Outlook calendar search. For example, you can ask Claude to locate a message thread or summarize its conversation, or find a calendar detail. Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 connector directory lists the available tools; the exact information Claude can retrieve is constrained by your account’s permissions.
Writing and calendar changes need extra approval
Do not assume that connecting Outlook automatically lets Claude send mail or change your calendar. Drafting or sending email and managing calendar events depend on the organization enabling write tools and completing the additional administrator consent and configuration described in Anthropic’s administrator setup guidance. Ask your administrator whether these actions are enabled before relying on them.
Permissions and privacy considerations
Anthropic describes the connector as using permissions delegated to each individual user, bounded by that person’s Microsoft 365 access. Its Microsoft 365 connector security guide says content remains in the Microsoft 365 tenant and is retrieved on demand during active queries rather than cached as file content. Those statements describe Anthropic’s connector; they should not be treated as a guarantee about separate services or every aspect of an organization’s data handling.
- Review the authorization request before approving it.
- Follow your employer’s policies for connecting workplace email and calendar data to Claude.
- Ask your administrator about tenant-specific controls and which tools your organization has enabled.
When a separate automation service may make sense
If your goal is to build trigger-and-action workflows rather than search Outlook from Claude, Zapier documents a separate Microsoft Outlook integration and a Zapier MCP route for making Outlook actions available through Claude. Its Outlook integration documentation lists a Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise account and an Exchange Online mailbox as prerequisites; administrator approval may be needed if third-party access is restricted.

Zapier is optional and introduces another service with its own account, mailbox prerequisites, and permissions to review. It is not required for the native Claude connector.
