Turn on GymKit detection on your iPhone

Make sure the machine supports the relevant GymKit connection. Bring your iPhone close to its contactless reader.

When the prompt appears on iPhone, tap Continue and choose the GymKit workout you want.

Press Start on the machine. If you try to begin from the Lock Screen and it does not work, unlock your iPhone and start through the Fitness app.

Apple also describes starting a GymKit workout from the Fitness app’s Workout section. To finish, swipe up from the bottom of the screen in Fitness and tap End Workout.
Check whether a treadmill, elliptical, or bike is compatible
GymKit support depends on the particular machine, not just its category. Apple names treadmills, ellipticals, and indoor bikes as examples of compatible equipment, but its guidance does not establish that every model supports iPhone GymKit. If no prompt appears, check with the gym or equipment manufacturer that the specific machine supports GymKit with iPhone.

Apple’s separate Apple Watch guide mentions equipment labels such as “Connects to Apple Watch” or “Connect to Apple Watch.” Those labels are described for the Watch connection flow, so they do not by themselves confirm that a machine supports the iPhone workflow. What to do if the machine does not appear

Check that Detect Gym Equipment is enabled in Fitness on your iPhone.

Verify the specific machine’s iPhone GymKit compatibility with the gym or manufacturer; the category alone is not enough.

Try again close to the contactless reader, select the workout prompt, and start from the Fitness app if a locked-screen attempt fails.

Apple’s iPhone guide provides the connection steps but does not publish a model-by-model compatibility list or a detailed failure-diagnosis checklist. It describes syncing workout information and calls it more accurate, but does not quantify an accuracy improvement for this iPhone-to-machine workflow.

AirPods Pro 3 are not a requirement for connecting an iPhone to GymKit equipment. Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement says users with AirPods Pro 3 can sync heart-rate data through iPhone with compatible gym equipment, including treadmills and indoor bikes. That is an additional capability, distinct from the basic Fitness app pairing steps. Apple’s announcement describes the feature.
Apple also describes GymKit on iPhone and compatible cardio categories on its iOS 27 feature page. Its published category examples do not identify specific current treadmill, elliptical, or bike models.
