“Ad blocker backlash” has two meanings: users may turn to blockers in response to intrusive, excessive or privacy-invasive ads, while publishers, ad-blocking companies and browser vendors may push back against ad blocking itself. The phrase is not a single formal technical term; its meaning depends on who is reacting and what they object to.
Why do people use ad blockers?
An ad blocker is commonly a browser plug-in that blocks ads from appearing and can prevent some ad code from communicating with ad exchanges or downloading tracking cookies, as the Columbia Journalism Review’s guide to ad blocking explains. People’s reasons vary, but the sources describe a recurring combination of disruption, page performance and privacy concerns.

- Ads interrupt or obscure content. Examples include ads that cover a page, follow a reader while scrolling, or play at length before a short video.
- Pages feel slow or heavy. The CJR guide discusses oversized, tracking-laden ad files and last-minute delivery as factors that can slow pages.
- Ad technology raises privacy or device concerns. Some ad code communicates with exchanges or uses tracking cookies, which can contribute to users’ desire to block it.
The organization behind the Acceptable Ads standard identifies intrusive or annoying ads and excessive ad volume as leading reasons people block ads. Because it is associated with an advertising standard, that account should be understood as its perspective, not as a neutral survey of all users.
Why are publishers asking readers to turn off blockers?
Advertising can help fund journalism and other online content. When a blocker prevents ads from appearing, publishers may see a risk to that revenue and ask readers to whitelist a site or disable blocking. That request is one form of the backlash against ad blocking; it does not mean every blocked impression would otherwise have produced the same revenue.

Other responses described in the sources include using first-party ads or sponsored content, introducing paywalls, and pursuing monetization arrangements for audiences using blockers. These approaches reflect different choices about funding and reader experience; the cited sources do not establish one as universally effective.
Why did Adblock Plus’s ad business draw criticism?
Ad blocking can also provoke backlash when the companies managing blockers decide which ads may still appear. In 2016, Adblock Plus announced an Acceptable Ad Exchange, and Contently reported that some publishers reacted angrily and with confusion.
In a 2016 interview with Contently, Eyeo co-founder Tim Schumacher described the exchange as a supply-side tool for publishers. He said it could allow publishers to select ads that met criteria such as limited quantity and non-obstructive formats. That was Schumacher’s account of the product, not independent confirmation of every commercial arrangement or how all participants experienced it.

Are ad blockers still effective after Chrome’s Manifest V3 changes?
A January 5, 2026 press release from TRR 266 Accounting for Transparency describes a study by Lazaros Papadopoulos and Karlo Lukic comparing Adblock Plus, AdGuard, Stands and uBlock Origin across approximately 924 websites using Manifest V2 and Manifest V3 versions. The release reports that the tested MV3 extensions continued to protect against intrusive ads and trackers, with minor possible differences in cosmetic filtering—the removal or alteration of page elements such as ad placeholders.
The researchers’ conclusion applies to the four extensions and sites in that study, not to every blocker, browser configuration or website. The release does not establish universal performance across the web.

These are different disputes, not interchangeable measures of one conflict. A reader’s objection to intrusive ads, a publisher’s funding concern, and a developer’s concern about extension capabilities can all be called “ad blocker backlash,” but each has a different cause and response.
