You can connect GitHub tools to Copilot Chat in VS Code either by enabling VS Code’s built-in GitHub MCP Server Preview or by adding GitHub’s remote MCP Server to an MCP configuration file. The built-in route is simpler when your VS Code version offers the setting; manual setup gives you an explicit server entry for configuration workflows that need one. Both use GitHub authentication, so MCP does not give Copilot access beyond the authenticated account’s permissions.
Choose a setup route

The built-in route described here is documented in the November 2025 VS Code 1.107 release notes as a Preview feature. Preview status and setting behavior can change, so consult the VS Code 1.107 release notes and current VS Code documentation if the setting is missing or behaves differently.

Enable VS Code’s built-in GitHub MCP Server
- In VS Code, open Settings and search for
github.copilot.chat.githubMcpServer.enabled. Set it totrue. You can also add the setting to your user settings JSON:{ "github.copilot.chat.githubMcpServer.enabled": true } - Open a Copilot Chat agent session and use the tool picker to find and enable the GitHub tools you want to make available.
- When prompted, authenticate with the GitHub account whose repositories and data Copilot should access. The release notes say this server reuses existing GitHub authentication and supports GitHub Enterprise Cloud endpoints, including GHE.com.
The release notes also describe a read-only option that removes write tools and a lockdown control. Their scope and current setting names should be checked in the release notes before relying on them; do not assume these controls grant or revoke GitHub account permissions.

VS Code’s MCP guide documents this remote server entry using the endpoint https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp. Add it to a supported configuration file, then start the server and complete the authentication flow offered by VS Code.

Portable configuration
VS Code also supports portable .mcp.json files, which use a top-level mcpServers object rather than servers. User-level portable configuration can be stored at ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json or $COPILOT_HOME/mcp-config.json. The current VS Code MCP configuration reference recommends portable destinations for new servers. Follow that reference’s format when creating a portable file; do not paste a VS Code-format servers block into a portable file unchanged.

Use one documented endpoint form as shown by the configuration route you follow; do not combine example fragments. Decide where configuration belongs
- Workspace:
.vscode/mcp.jsonor.mcp.jsoncan be shared with a project. Review the file before trusting a repository, and never commit a credential or secret. - User-level: A personal VS Code or portable user configuration avoids adding server settings to a repository and is more suitable for personal setup.
- Agent Host: Agent Host reads portable MCP configuration directly. VS Code forwards eligible
.vscode/mcp.jsonconfigurations, but excludes servers that require interactive input such as${input:...}. If a server appears in Chat but not in an Agent Host session, check whether its configuration relies on that input mechanism.

Protect your GitHub account and machine
MCP makes tools and context available to an agent; it does not bypass GitHub’s access controls. Use an account with only the repository access the task requires, and grant a token only the necessary permissions. GitHub recommends keeping tokens out of version control and using separate tokens for projects or environments. Prefer VS Code’s authentication flow or input variables over hardcoding sensitive values in configuration.

Be especially cautious with local MCP servers. VS Code warns that “Local MCP servers can run arbitrary code on your machine.” Review the server publisher and configuration before starting one. The GitHub endpoint shown above is a remote server, but any additional local server you configure deserves that review.

Verify the connection and troubleshoot failures
- Open Copilot Chat in an agent session and inspect the tool picker for GitHub tools.
- If the server is absent or fails to start, run
MCP: List Serversfrom the Command Palette and inspect that server’s status. - Open the server’s output log and read the startup or authentication error before changing configuration. VS Code also shows a chat error indicator when it encounters an MCP server issue.
- If tools seem stale after a configuration change, run
MCP: Reset Cached Tools. If VS Code is retaining an untrusted-server decision, useMCP: Reset Trustand review the server before trusting it again. - If the configuration works in Chat but not Agent Host, confirm that the host can read the configuration location and that the server does not depend on an interactive
${input:...}value.
