How you connect an Apple keyboard to an iPad depends on the keyboard: pair a computer-style Apple Bluetooth keyboard in Settings > Bluetooth, but attach an iPad-specific keyboard cover to its Smart Connector. The cover models do not use Bluetooth pairing.
First, identify which Apple keyboard you have
Apple sells computer keyboards that connect over Bluetooth as well as keyboard covers made specifically for iPad. They use different connection methods, so identify the model before troubleshooting.

- Bluetooth keyboard: A computer-style Magic Keyboard pairs through the iPad’s Bluetooth settings.
- iPad keyboard cover: Magic Keyboard for iPad, Magic Keyboard Folio, Smart Keyboard, and Smart Keyboard Folio attach to compatible iPads through the Smart Connector. They do not pair like Bluetooth devices. Apple explains that “Unlike Bluetooth keyboards, you don’t need to pair or turn on your Smart Keyboard Folio or Smart Keyboard.” Apple’s Smart Keyboard setup guide describes the process.
Check the exact iPad and keyboard models before connecting or buying a cover. Apple lists different compatibility groups for each family; for example, Magic Keyboard Folio is listed for iPad (A16) and iPad (10th generation). See Apple’s current iPad keyboard compatibility table for the full list.

Pair a Bluetooth Apple keyboard with iPad
- Charge the keyboard if needed, then switch it on. On current Magic Keyboard hardware, green visible at the power switch indicates that it is on.
- On the iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- Wait for the keyboard to appear in the available devices list, then tap its name. The list label may vary by iPadOS version. Apple’s Magic Keyboard Bluetooth pairing guide gives the selection flow for iPhone; Apple’s iPad guide confirms that iPad supports external Bluetooth keyboards.
- If the keyboard is already paired with a Mac or another device and does not appear, disconnect or forget it there, then try again. Apple notes that an existing pairing may need to be removed before connecting the keyboard to another device; behavior can vary by keyboard.
Attach an iPad-specific keyboard cover
These keyboards connect through the Smart Connector, which carries power and data. They do not need Bluetooth pairing.
