AI Extinction Scenarios Compared: What Could They Mean?

AI extinction scenarios describe hypothetical pathways where AI contributes to human extinction. They differ from broader existential catastrophes and do not establish a settled likelihood or timeline.

AI extinction scenarios are hypothetical pathways in which AI contributes to the extinction of humanity. They are part of the broader discussion of AI existential risk, which can also include societal collapse or a permanent, drastic loss of humanity’s future potential. Those outcomes are serious, but they are not the same as human extinction.

What counts as an AI extinction scenario?

The key feature is the endpoint: human extinction. A scenario describes a possible chain of events in which AI plays a contributing role; it is not a prediction that those events will happen.

The UK Government Office for Science’s AI 2030 scenarios report notes that definitions vary and uses a working definition of existential risk that includes human extinction or societal collapse. The report says its scenarios are not a statement of government policy. For clarity, “extinction scenario” can refer narrowly to human extinction, while “existential catastrophe” can serve as a broader umbrella for extinction, societal collapse, or permanent loss of human agency.

How could AI contribute to human extinction?

Two distinct scenario families appear in the sources: loss of control, in which AI systems operate beyond human control, and malicious use, in which people use AI to help cause catastrophic harm. These are hypothetical pathways, not established accounts of what current AI systems can do.

Loss of control

A loss-of-control scenario involves one or more general-purpose AI systems operating outside anyone’s control, with no clear path to regaining it. The International AI Safety Report 2026 describes a range of possible outcomes with different levels of severity. Some researchers consider human marginalisation or extinction possible, but the report does not present either as inevitable. Expert views about likelihood vary substantially, reflecting disagreements about future capabilities, system behavior, and how AI is developed and deployed.

Malicious use

In this family, people use AI to enable catastrophic harm. A RAND analysis examines potential pathways involving nuclear weapons, pathogens, and geoengineering. It concludes that creating an extinction threat through these technologies with AI would be immensely challenging, while not ruling out the possibility. These are studied hypothetical routes, not demonstrated current capabilities.

How the scenario pathways compare

Scenario family Main agent Pathway described What the sources establish
Loss of control AI system or systems Systems operate beyond human control, with no clear way to regain it. The International AI Safety Report 2026 describes possible outcomes of varying severity and substantial expert disagreement about likelihood. It does not establish that extinction is inevitable.
Malicious use People using AI AI helps enable catastrophic harm involving nuclear weapons, pathogens, or geoengineering. RAND examines these as potential pathways and says creating an extinction threat through them would be immensely challenging; it does not rule out the possibility.

Comparing any proposed scenario means looking beyond the technology involved. Ask who or what acts, what causal steps would have to occur, what evidence exists about relevant present capabilities, what endpoint is being claimed, and how uncertain each link is. The cited reports do not provide a shared quantitative scale for scoring these pathways.

What is known about likelihood and timing?

The sources do not establish one authoritative probability or timeline for AI-related human extinction. A scenario’s plausibility is not a measure of its likelihood, and a description of a possible pathway does not show that it will occur.

The 2024 interim International Scientific Report says expert opinion can help guide discussion where research is limited, but cannot replace research. That is especially relevant when judgments depend on future capabilities and deployment choices. No numerical probability or arrival date should be treated as settled fact on the basis of these reports.

How to read claims about AI extinction

  • Check the endpoint. Extinction means humanity ceases to exist; societal collapse or permanent disempowerment are related but distinct outcomes.
  • Identify the pathway. Loss of control and human misuse describe different causes and should not be blurred together.
  • Separate possibility from likelihood. A hypothetical route is not proof that it is probable, inevitable, or within current systems’ demonstrated capabilities.
  • Look for attribution. Definitions, scenario analyses, expert judgments, and advocacy statements serve different purposes.

For example, the Center for AI Safety states: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.” This is the organization’s advocacy position about priority, not a measured estimate of the probability of extinction.
