You can connect an AI agent to a user’s GitHub account through Nango’s hosted MCP server without putting GitHub’s OAuth token in the model’s input. OAuth still happens, and your application still needs a Nango credential or other approved session credential: Nango holds and presents the provider credential while the agent calls the tools you enable.
What “without touching an OAuth token” means
It means the model does not receive GitHub’s provider access token as a prompt, tool argument, or tool result. It does not mean that GitHub authorization disappears or that the system has no credentials. A user authorizes access through OAuth; Nango manages the resulting provider credential and refresh, while your backend authenticates to Nango and selects the user’s connection.

Nango’s authentication documentation describes support for OAuth 2.0, OAuth 1.0a, API keys, JWT, Basic authentication, and MCP authentication, and says credentials are encrypted in transit and at rest with tenant isolation. Those are Nango’s product claims, not an independent security audit.

Configure the GitHub App’s OAuth callback URL as
https://api.nango.dev/oauth/callback. -
Add a test connection and authorize it with a GitHub account that has the repository access needed for the issues and pull requests your integration will handle.
-
Build and test the integration against that connection before exposing its tools to an agent.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
The GitHub guide published by Nango on June 17, 2026 uses this GitHub App OAuth setup. Nango’s GitHub integration also offers templates for repositories, commits, and pull requests; you can build additional actions, syncs, or triggers for the same connection.

Choose what the agent can do
An MCP connection exposes tools, so enable only the operations the agent needs. Nango’s guide demonstrates actions such as creating an issue and commenting on a pull request. It also describes syncs that import issues and pull requests, and webhook events that can be routed into the integration.
- Actions: let the agent perform operations, such as creating an issue.
- Syncs: import provider data so your application can keep a local view current.
- Webhooks: deliver GitHub events to your integration as they occur.
These functions solve different problems. If the agent only needs to respond to a request by taking an action, start with the required actions rather than enabling data ingestion or event handling by default.
Connect an MCP client to Nango’s hosted server
The hosted MCP endpoint used in Nango’s guide is https://api.nango.dev/mcp. The client request needs the endpoint, the provider config key github-app-oauth, and the connection ID belonging to the authenticated application user. The guide’s request authenticates to Nango with a Nango secret key in the HTTP bearer authorization header.

Expose only the selected MCP tools to the agent.
Nango’s Codex configuration example uses an environment variable named NANGO_SECRET_KEY and passes the provider config and connection ID as HTTP headers. The important implementation detail is that connection selection must happen per logged-in user: do not hardcode a test connection or reuse one user’s connection for everyone.

Keep access scoped to the application user
Connection IDs and tool availability are authorization decisions, not harmless configuration values. Authenticate the application user first, then select a connection that belongs to that user and limit the session or client to the integrations and tools required for the task. Nango’s MCP documentation describes selecting which connections, integrations, and tools a session can access.
- Verify ownership: resolve the connection from the authenticated user’s server-side identity, not from an untrusted model-generated value.
- Limit capability: make only necessary actions available; a task that reads issues does not automatically need permission to create or modify them.
- Protect Nango credentials: keep the Nango secret key on trusted server-side infrastructure. The model needs tool access, not the key itself.
- Review operational activity: use Nango’s action and sync logs to investigate execution and data-flow issues.
A separate Nango Agent Sessions tutorial dated September 18, 2026 shows a useful security pattern: a backend creates a short-lived session restricted to a selected connection and read-only action, authenticates the MCP client with a session token, and terminates the session explicitly. That example is for Gmail, not the GitHub setup described above; treat it as a design pattern rather than a GitHub configuration recipe.
Handle authorization failures and webhook setup
For webhook-driven workflows, configure the GitHub App’s webhook URL using the webhook URL shown in the Nango integration settings. The GitHub integration guide also points to Nango’s dashboard logs for actions and syncs.

What Nango’s platform figures do—and do not—tell you
On pages presented in 2026, Nango says its integration catalog covers 1,000+ APIs, its MCP page lists 7,000+ ready-made tools, and its authentication page claims 99.9% uptime. These are vendor-published figures, not independently verified measurements. They do not establish how a particular GitHub workflow will perform or whether its enabled tools fit your security requirements.
