To connect a new Amazon Echo to Wi-Fi, plug it in, then open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo. Choose the matching device family and follow the prompts. If an Echo without a screen is already set up, change its saved network in the app instead. Screen-equipped models use their on-device Wi-Fi settings.
Before you start
Have the Echo and its power adapter, a phone or other internet-ready mobile device with the Alexa app, an Amazon account, and your Wi-Fi network name and password ready. Amazon lists these prerequisites for the Echo Spot (2024 release); check your model’s instructions for any device-specific details. Amazon Echo setup help

Check whether your Wi-Fi network is compatible
Amazon says Echo devices connect to common home Wi-Fi networks on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz using 802.11a/b/g/n. That general guidance does not guarantee compatibility with every router configuration or every Echo model. Amazon also states: “Echo devices can’t connect to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) networks.” Amazon’s Echo Wi-Fi settings guidance
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot an Echo that will not connect
Work through these checks in order. If the Alexa app or device menus differ, follow the instructions for your Echo model.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Check whether the internet works on another device. Try a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi network. If multiple devices cannot connect, the issue may be with the network or internet provider. Amazon Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting · Amazon setup troubleshooting
- Improve the Echo’s connection to the router. Amazon advises keeping the Echo within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router. Move it away from potential interference such as microwaves, baby monitors, or other electronics. If many devices are connected, temporarily reduce the number and try again. Amazon Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting
- Recheck the network and password. Enter the Wi-Fi password again. If your router broadcasts separate names for its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try connecting to the other band. Amazon Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting
- Restart the Echo. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Amazon setup troubleshooting
- Update the Alexa app and retry. Amazon recommends using the latest version of the app. If setup still fails, follow the Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions for your Echo. Amazon setup troubleshooting · Amazon guidance for an Echo that cannot connect
- Use a hotspot as a diagnostic, then consider a reset. Amazon suggests trying a phone hotspot during failed setup and resetting the Echo if the earlier steps do not work. Reset procedures vary by model; use that model’s instructions rather than a universal button sequence. Amazon setup troubleshooting
Use the symptoms to narrow down the cause
- If other devices can use the network but the Echo cannot, revisit the password, placement, possible interference, and band choice.
- If other devices also cannot get online, check or restart the router. Contact your internet provider if service remains unavailable.
- Amazon’s smart-home device error-code help distinguishes a device that connected to the router but has no internet from one that could not connect to the router. That distinction applies to the error codes covered on that page, not necessarily to every Echo setup screen. Amazon smart-home device error codes
When the app menus do not match
Echo setup flows depend on the model and whether it has a screen. Amazon maintains separate setup instructions for many Echo devices, and app labels can change. Find the instructions for your exact model in Amazon’s Echo setup help rather than assuming one menu path works for every device.
