Connect a Laptop to a PC Wirelessly: Choose the Right Windows Method

Windows has separate wireless options for file sharing, screen projection, and remote control. Choose the one that matches what you want to do.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect a laptop to a PC without a cable, first decide what you want to do: transfer a few files, show one computer’s screen on the other, or control the PC remotely. Windows uses different features for each task; no single wireless connection mode handles them all.

Choose a wireless method based on your goal

What you want to do Use Key condition
Send nearby files or links between Windows PCs Nearby Sharing Uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The documented Wi-Fi path requires the PCs to be on the same private Wi-Fi network.
Send a file to a paired device Bluetooth File Transfer Both computers need Bluetooth, and the recipient must be in receive mode.
Mirror or extend a screen Miracast / Wireless Display Both endpoints need compatible wireless display capability; PC-to-PC receiving requires Wireless Display on the target PC.
Use another PC’s desktop, apps, or files Remote Desktop The computer being controlled must run Windows Pro.

These options are for nearby devices or a configured remote connection. They do not establish that a PC will be discoverable or reachable over the public internet. For sharing a large folder over a local network, consult current Windows network-sharing instructions for your version; the workflows below are for individual files, display projection, or remote control.

Send nearby files with Nearby Sharing

Nearby Sharing is the simplest first option for sending a few files or links between Windows computers that are physically close. Microsoft says it can use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. In the documented Wi-Fi case, a Windows 11 sender can share with a Windows 10 or 11 receiver on the same private Wi-Fi network. This does not mean every Nearby Sharing transfer uses Wi-Fi or that Wi-Fi is always faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
1. On the Windows 11 sending PC, open Nearby Sharing settings or its quick control and choose who can share with the device. Choose your own devices for a more limited setting, or everyone if appropriate. Labels and availability may vary by region and Windows version. Microsoft’s Nearby Sharing instructions describe the feature and its sharing options.
  2. Select the file or link you want to send and use the Windows Share option. Select the receiving PC when it appears.
  3. Accept the incoming share on the receiving PC if prompted, then check the destination shown by Windows.

Nearby Sharing is for nearby sharing, not a way to browse the other PC’s files or control its desktop.

Transfer a file with Bluetooth

Bluetooth File Transfer is a separate workflow from Nearby Sharing. It is useful for a basic nearby exchange when both PCs have Bluetooth, but it requires pairing and the receiving computer must be ready to accept the file. Microsoft’s Bluetooth file-transfer instructions explain the send and receive flow.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on both computers and pair them through Windows Bluetooth settings.
  2. On the receiving computer, open the Bluetooth file-transfer option and choose to receive a file. Leave it waiting while you send.
  3. On the sending computer, choose the option to send a file via Bluetooth, select the paired PC, and choose the file.
  4. Accept or save the incoming file on the receiving computer if Windows prompts you.

If Windows does not show “Send or receive files via Bluetooth,” check whether the PC has a Bluetooth adapter and whether its driver is installed. A USB Bluetooth adapter is only a possible fix if the built-in adapter is absent or unsupported; confirm that the adapter works with that PC and its Windows version before buying one.

Project a screen with Miracast or Wireless Display

Wireless display projection shows or extends a screen; it does not transfer files or give the receiving computer remote control of the sender. To cast from Windows 11 to a compatible Miracast display, press Windows+K and select the display. See Microsoft’s screen-mirroring and projection instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a Windows PC as the receiving display

  1. On the target PC, install the Wireless Display optional feature in Windows settings, then open the Wireless Display app so the PC is available to receive a projection.
  2. Make sure Wi-Fi is on. Microsoft says Wireless Display is available on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later; earlier Windows versions may use the Connect app.
  3. On the sending PC, press Windows+K or open display settings, then select the target PC.
  4. Choose whether to duplicate or extend the display if Windows offers that choice.

If the target PC does not appear, confirm that Wi-Fi is on and the Wireless Display app is open on the receiving computer. Both endpoints must also support compatible wireless display capability. A Miracast adapter may help when the intended TV, monitor, or projector lacks native Miracast support; it is not needed for file transfers or remote control.

Control the PC remotely with Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop is for interacting with a PC’s desktop, apps, and files from another device. It is not a dedicated file-transfer method. The PC being controlled—the host—must run Windows Pro. The client can be Windows Home or Pro, or another operating system. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop setup guide covers the basic connection flow.

  1. On the host PC, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and turn on Remote Desktop.
  2. Record the host PC’s name from the Remote Desktop settings page.
  3. On the laptop, open Remote Desktop Connection or an appropriate Remote Desktop client, enter the host PC’s name, and connect.
  4. Sign in with an account authorized on the host PC.

This basic setup does not by itself establish how to connect through a router or over the public internet. Do not assume the host will be reachable off-network without the appropriate network configuration.

Check Windows support and hardware before troubleshooting

  • Windows 10: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Check instructions against the exact Windows version you use; feature availability and support may differ.
  • Bluetooth: If Bluetooth transfer is missing, check Windows settings and Device Manager for an adapter and driver before considering a USB adapter.
  • Wireless display: Confirm both PCs support wireless display, Wi-Fi is on, and the receiving app is running. A TV or monitor without Miracast may need a compatible display adapter.
  • Remote Desktop: Check the edition of the host PC. The Windows Pro requirement applies to the computer being controlled, not the laptop used as the client.

Microsoft’s instructions do not provide a directly comparable transfer-rate figure for these methods, so choose based on the task and available hardware rather than an assumed speed advantage.
