The converter must take HDMI in and output composite video and audio. A cable alone will not convert the signal, and an RCA-to-HDMI converter has the opposite direction.
Amazon’s standard setup calls for an available HDMI port. The workaround below is for older TVs with composite inputs; it does not provide HD or 4K picture quality, and protected streaming content may not work through every converter.

Check your TV’s inputs before buying anything
Look at the back or side of the TV for three composite sockets, usually colored yellow for video and red and white for stereo audio. Some TVs use a small breakout adapter instead of full-size RCA sockets; check whether that adapter is present and compatible with the TV.

If access is cramped or the Stick does not fit, Amazon lists an HDMI extender as an optional accessory. An extender helps with clearance; it does not add an HDMI input to a TV that lacks one. If there is no HDMI and no composite input, the RCA method below does not apply. Identify the TV’s actual input type and look for a converter designed specifically to accept the Stick’s HDMI output and work with that input. A generic adapter cable is not a substitute for signal conversion.
Choose the right HDMI-to-composite converter
For a TV with composite RCA inputs, choose a converter that explicitly accepts an HDMI source and outputs composite AV. Do not confuse it with an RCA-to-HDMI converter, which converts in the reverse direction.

Before buying, check the converter’s documentation for:

- Whether it accepts HDMI input and outputs composite video and audio.
- Support for the video standard used by your TV.
- Whether it needs a separate USB power connection and whether a power supply is included.
- Any stated resolution or other limits, plus compatibility notes for protected HDMI content.
Converter instructions can vary by model. For example, one manufacturer’s RCA-to-HDMI Converter Adapter manual illustrates that wiring and power requirements are product-specific; it is not a recommendation for this HDMI-to-composite use case. Follow the instructions for the exact converter you choose.

Connect the Stick to a composite-input TV
- Connect the Fire TV Stick’s HDMI plug to the converter’s HDMI input.
- Connect the converter’s yellow video output to the TV’s yellow composite input, and its red and white audio outputs to the matching TV inputs. If the TV uses a breakout adapter, connect through the appropriate adapter.
- Connect power to the converter if its instructions require it.
- Power the Fire TV Stick using its supplied USB cable and power adapter. Amazon advises against powering the Stick by connecting its USB cable directly to the TV.
- Turn on the TV and select the AV, Video, or Composite input that the converter is connected to.
- Follow the on-screen Fire TV setup: connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to an Amazon account.
Amazon’s setup instructions describe the normal HDMI connection, power, and account setup. With a converter, the TV source you select is the composite input carrying the converter’s output, not an HDMI source.

Composite does not make an old TV an HD or 4K display
The converter changes the connection format; it cannot give a composite TV HD or 4K capability. Amazon’s 4K Ultra HD guidance requires an Ultra HD television with an HDMI input that supports HDCP 2.2, and its stated 4K conditions require HDCP 2.2 throughout the home-theater chain.

Protected content may not work through every converter
Amazon’s Fire TV device specifications and FAQ say Fire TV output is HDCP-protected over HDMI. The available Amazon guidance does not certify every converter for every Fire TV model, television, streaming app, or protected title. Check the converter’s documentation and treat playback of protected content as model-dependent; no converter can be assumed to bypass copy protection or guarantee access to a particular service.
