Congressional probe faults Match Group over outdated Tinder scam controls

A Senate investigation faults Match Group’s Tinder safety controls, citing years-old scam-detection models and a 700%-plus rise in median scammer profile views, while Match reports later reductions after new safeguards.

A year-long investigation released by the Democratic minority of the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee on October 13, 2026, says Match Group failed to keep key Tinder scam-detection systems current while scammers gained substantially more exposure on the service. Committee investigators said most artificial-intelligence models used to detect scammers and other bad actors had not been updated for years as of the second half of 2025.

The findings concern Match Group’s dating platforms, including Tinder, Hinge, Match and Plenty of Fish. They are based on more than 670 pages of internal documents supplied by the company and describe a broader pattern of safety shortcomings, alongside measures Match later said reduced harmful interactions.

What the Senate investigation found

The committee reported that, globally, the median Tinder scammer’s profile views rose by more than 700% between May 2024 and December 2025. It also said Match knew Tinder was more likely to show a profile when it belonged to a scammer or another bad actor than when it belonged to an ordinary user.

Those are committee findings, not a court ruling that every Tinder recommendation was fraudulent. The report focuses on the design and maintenance of scam-prevention controls, especially whether detection models were being updated often enough to keep pace with changing fraud tactics.

Were Tinder’s scam filters outdated?

According to the internal material described in the release, most AI models Tinder used to identify scammers and other bad actors had not been updated for years by late 2025. An expert quoted by committee staff said Tinder, as a persistent scam target, would need to retrain machine-learning models monthly at minimum depending on its monitoring systems and other metrics. The expert said retraining only once or twice a year would indicate that fraud detection was not being treated seriously.

What Match Group says it changed

Match told investigators that it introduced safeguards after the period highlighted in the investigation. The company announced a U.S. rollout of Face Check on Tinder in October 2025 and deployed it nationwide in early December 2025.

Match reported that, within one month of nationwide deployment, interactions with bad actors—including spam, bots and scammers—fell by more than 70% in the United States. The company said the reduction continued for at least seven months. These figures come from Match’s submission to the committee and are not an independent evaluation.

Match also said it introduced a new AI model during the first half of 2026 to examine profiles and other information for indicators of scams. The committee’s release does not provide an independent apples-to-apples measurement of how that model performed against other dating services.

How large are romance-scam losses?

The figures cited by U.S. officials vary with the reporting period and description, so they should not be combined into one supposedly exact total.

  • The Joint Economic Committee release describes nearly $1.5 billion in romance-scam losses reported to the Federal Trade Commission for the 2025 reporting year, nearly a 650% increase from 2019.
  • A bipartisan Senate letter dated September 24, 2025, cited an FTC estimate of at least $1.3 billion in annual U.S. losses.

Both figures indicate substantial consumer harm, but neither measures every loss. Romance scams are often underreported, and the two references use different dates and descriptions.

What this means for people using dating apps

Model updates and identity checks can reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee that every account is genuine or that every scam will be caught before contact. Treat an unexpected request for money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, banking details or remote access as a stop signal. Do not move funds to prove trust, and preserve messages, profile details and payment records before blocking an account.

If an account appears fraudulent, use the dating service’s in-app reporting and blocking tools. Consumers who lose money can report the incident through the Federal Trade Commission’s fraud-reporting system and contact the financial institution or payment service involved as quickly as possible. Those steps do not replace platform safeguards, but they can help limit further loss and preserve evidence for investigators.

Related FTC actions are separate from the scam-detection findings

The FTC announced in August 2025 that Match Group agreed to pay $14 million and change practices involving deceptive guarantees, account lockouts and cancellation procedures. That case concerns billing and advertising conduct; it is not proof of the Joint Economic Committee’s allegations about scam-detection models.

In March 2026, an FTC case involving OkCupid and Match Group Americas alleged that personal information, including photos and location data, was shared with an unrelated third party contrary to privacy promises. The case page records a stipulated order. That is a privacy matter distinct from romance-scam detection.

Will dating apps have to warn users after a scammer is banned?

The Congressional Record describes a proposed fraud-ban notification requirement under which an online dating service would tell users when they had interacted with an account later banned for fraud. The proposal could allow a delay when law enforcement requests one and describes implementation one year after enactment.

The record excerpt does not establish that the requirement had been enacted or that an effective date was in force as of October 15, 2026. Users should therefore treat post-ban notifications as a potential legal safeguard, not a currently guaranteed feature on every dating service.

Questions regulators and users still need answered

The investigation supplies evidence about Tinder’s controls but not a complete scorecard for every dating platform. Meaningful comparisons would require consistent data on identity or liveness verification, how often detection models are retrained, how quickly accounts are removed, whether users are notified after a fraud ban, false-positive and appeal rates, and independent measurements of scam exposure.
