Andhra Pradesh Police are using artificial-intelligence tools alongside officers, cameras and a command-control operation to manage crowds, traffic and emergencies during the 2026 Dasara Sharannavaratri festivities at the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy temple on Indrakeeladri in Vijayawada. DGP Harish Kumar Gupta said the system is intended to identify pressure points early and direct additional personnel where they are needed, not replace policing on the ground.
The DGP made the statement while inspecting the police command control centre at Vijayawada’s Model Guest House. The festivities were continuing through October 20, 2026, when Deccan Chronicle reported his remarks on October 14.

How AI is being used at the Dasara temple
Police are applying AI-based crowd analysis to live movement patterns around the temple and associated routes. The analysis is meant to help officers:

DGP Gupta described the approach in direct terms: “We are extensively using artificial intelligence in policing during this year’s Dasara festivities.” The report does not identify the AI model, camera system, analytics supplier or a measured accuracy rate, so the statement establishes the operational use but not a quantified performance result.

What the command control centre does
The command centre provides a central view of situations in different areas and supports decisions that must be coordinated across teams. Its reported functions include crowd regulation, traffic diversion and faster emergency response, with field personnel carrying out the resulting instructions.

AI is assisting police, not replacing them
Gupta’s central qualification was that technology alone is insufficient for a major religious gathering. He said human supervision, effective police deployment on the ground and coordination among government departments remain equally important.

That division of responsibility matters in a temple environment. An alert can indicate unusual density, but officers still have to verify conditions, communicate with devotees, manage barriers and queues, and decide whether to divert movement. Government departments also have to coordinate roads, venues and emergency support. The stated objective is a safe and convenient darshan rather than an automated crowd-control system operating without human decisions.
Security planning also covered the President’s visit
The DGP’s inspection included preparations for President Droupadi Murmu’s visit. Officials reviewed route maps, convoy management, public-meeting venues and the places where the President would stay. Those arrangements were considered during the same command-centre and security review as the Dasara operations.
The report does not give a separate technology specification or staffing figure for the presidential programme. It shows, however, that the control-room operation was being used for a broader security plan involving a high-profile visit as well as the temple crowds.

- Use only authorised paths and do not take unauthorised routes around the temple.
- Keep watch over children and elderly devotees.
- Assist anyone who appears to need help.
- Approach the nearest police personnel immediately if a problem occurs.
Following these instructions gives officers a predictable flow to manage and helps prevent small disruptions from becoming larger crowd problems.

The October 14 account does not name the AI, camera, analytics or traffic-management vendors. It also does not disclose procurement contracts, operating costs, data-retention periods, privacy safeguards, attendance totals, incident counts, emergency-response times or any measured reduction in congestion or accidents.

Consequently, the announcement should be read as an account of how Andhra Pradesh Police say they are operating during the 2026 festivities, not as an independent performance study. Further official releases or procurement records would be needed to establish which systems are installed, how long video or derived data are retained, and how accurately alerts predict crowd pressure.
