Configure the Power Button Action on Battery with Intune Settings Catalog

Configure the battery-specific Windows power-button action in Intune, choose among four supported behaviors, and verify the device policy status.

To control what a Windows device does when someone presses its physical power button while it is running on battery, deploy the device-scoped SelectPowerButtonActionOnBattery setting in an Intune Settings Catalog profile. Choose one action: take no action, sleep, hibernate, or shut down. Leaving the setting unconfigured—or disabling it—does not disable the button; users can still see and change the Windows setting.

What the policy controls

Microsoft describes this policy as specifying “the action that Windows takes when a user presses the power button.” The setting’s CSP path is ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/Power/SelectPowerButtonActionOnBattery, and its scope is Device, not User. Its name is literal: it applies to the physical power button while the device is on battery.

This is not the same as choosing a power command from the Windows Start menu, nor does it configure the physical sleep button. Windows has separate settings for those controls. The plugged-in power-button action is also separate: SelectPowerButtonActionPluggedIn. Configure both power states if your intended behavior must be consistent whether the device is plugged in or running on battery. Microsoft’s Power Policy CSP reference documents the setting paths and scope.

Supported actions and values

The setting uses an integer. Microsoft lists 1 (Sleep) as the default. When you enable the policy, select the value that matches the behavior you want.

Microsoft also identifies the corresponding hardware power-setting name as PBUTTONACTION, with GUID 7648efa3-dd9c-4e3e-b566-50f929386280. Its Power button action reference describes that hardware setting.

Configure the setting in Intune

  1. Check target compatibility. Microsoft lists Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise / IoT Enterprise LTSC, with applicability starting at Windows 10 version 1903. Confirm the edition and version on the devices you intend to manage against the current Microsoft support details before rollout.
  2. Create a Settings Catalog profile. In the Intune admin center, go to Devices > Manage devices > Configuration > Create > New policy. Select Windows 10 and later as the platform and Settings catalog as the profile type, following Microsoft’s Settings Catalog instructions.
  3. Add the battery-specific setting. In Configuration settings, use the picker search to find SelectPowerButtonActionOnBattery. Inspect the selected entry’s tooltip and its Learn more or CSP link. Confirm that the path is the battery-specific setting, not the similarly named plugged-in setting. Microsoft’s current instructions do not establish a precise picker category or display label for this item, so verify the entry by its setting name and CSP path rather than relying on a presumed category.
  4. Enable it and choose an action. Select the intended value: 0 for take no action, 1 for sleep, 2 for hibernate, or 3 for shut down. If you want the battery behavior to differ from the plugged-in behavior, configure the two settings independently.
  5. Assign and create the profile. Assign it to the intended device group, then review and create the profile. Because this is a device-scoped setting, target the devices whose behavior you want to manage.
  6. Check deployment status. After the next device configuration check-in, review the profile and per-setting status in Intune. Microsoft says reporting can show success, conflict, or error.

Diagnose a setting that does not apply

  • Check the device and Windows version. Confirm the target is an applicable edition and meets the documented Windows version boundary.
  • Verify the selected CSP entry. Make sure the profile contains SelectPowerButtonActionOnBattery, not the plugged-in setting or a separate Start menu power control.
  • Review per-setting status. Intune reporting can identify success, conflict, or error. Microsoft notes that a conflict can occur when another policy configures the same setting to a different value.
  • Check whether the setting is configured in this profile. If it is not configured, Intune’s Settings Catalog guidance says it is removed from that profile and is no longer managed by that profile. Another policy or the device user may then control it; absence from this profile is not a command to disable the physical button.

The equivalent Group Policy setting is Select the Power button action (on battery), under Computer Configuration > System > Power Management > Button Settings. This name can help administrators recognize the same on-battery behavior when comparing policy configurations, but Intune’s CSP entry is the setting to select in the Settings Catalog. The mapping is documented in Microsoft’s Power Policy CSP reference.
