In Intune, deploy it together with DefaultSearchProviderEnabled and DefaultSearchProviderSearchURL. The suggestion URL must contain {searchTerms}, which Edge replaces with the text currently being typed.
This setting controls type-ahead suggestions, not the page opened after a search is submitted. The Intune labels described below can move as Microsoft updates the admin center; the policy names and verification steps remain the reliable reference.
What each Edge search policy does
Microsoft documents these as separate policies:

The suggestion policy is a string value and is effective only when the default provider is enabled and a search URL is configured. Microsoft’s references are DefaultSearchProviderEnabled, DefaultSearchProviderSearchURL, and DefaultSearchProviderSuggestURL.
If the suggestion policy is absent or ineffective, Edge can still show local results such as history and favorites, but it will not obtain search-engine suggestions through this configuration.

Prerequisites and scope
- For the policy itself, Microsoft lists Edge 77 or later on Windows and macOS, Edge 30 or later on Android, and Edge 84 or later on iOS. The Intune procedure here targets managed Windows devices.
- Devices must be enrolled in Intune, and the administrator needs permission to create and assign Windows configuration profiles.
- Choose a provider endpoint that is reachable from clients and accepts the request format Edge sends.
- Test the policy in a work or school Edge profile. Microsoft’s current reference says this policy does not apply to a profile signed in with a Microsoft account.
- Decide whether the setting should be mandatory or recommended. Mandatory settings provide enforcement; recommended settings allow more user control and may not add an organization’s provider when a user already selected another one.
Microsoft documents dynamic refresh, per-profile application, and both mandatory and recommended modes. On Windows, the mandatory registry location is SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge; recommended values use SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeRecommended. The registry value is DefaultSearchProviderSuggestURL of type REG_SZ.
Build the correct URL values
Every suggestion URL must contain the literal replacement token {searchTerms}. Edge substitutes the current address-bar text for that token. Do not replace it with a fixed word or remove it.

The search and suggestion endpoints may have different paths and response formats. Before deployment, confirm whether the service expects GET or POST, how it handles URL encoding, whether authentication is required, and which response format Edge supports. Microsoft’s mobile policy documentation discusses additional POST parameters for supported mobile scenarios; do not assume a Windows string URL can call every custom API unchanged. Create the Intune configuration
The exact menu wording varies between Intune releases. The current workflow is generally:

- Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Open Devices, then Configuration or Configuration policies.
- Select Create and choose a Windows platform profile. Use Settings catalog or the available Microsoft Edge policy template.
- Open the Microsoft Edge category. In the settings picker, locate the search-provider settings; the HTMD walkthrough labels the suggestion setting Default Search Provider URL for Suggestions under Edge content settings.
- Configure
DefaultSearchProviderEnabledas Enabled. - Configure
DefaultSearchProviderSearchURLwith the provider’s normal search URL, including{searchTerms}. - Configure
DefaultSearchProviderSuggestURLwith the suggestion endpoint, also including{searchTerms}. - Optionally set
DefaultSearchProviderNameandDefaultSearchProviderKeyword. - Assign the profile to a small pilot user or device group. Review the settings, then create the profile.
- Synchronize a pilot device or user and wait for policy processing before testing Edge.
Keeping the enabling, search, and suggestion settings in one profile makes incomplete assignments and policy conflicts easier to identify. The original HTMD procedure, published August 18, 2025, is useful for the workflow, but its screenshots should be treated as historical examples. See HTMD’s walkthrough.
Pilot and policy-precedence checks
Start with a limited group containing representative Windows builds and the Edge profile types your organization uses. Record the intended provider, both URLs, assignment scope, and whether the policy is mandatory or recommended.
Investigate conflicts if another Intune profile, Edge Administrative Template, local Group Policy, registry value, cloud-managed Edge policy, or different user/device assignment configures the same setting. A value shown in Intune as assigned is not proof that Edge has consumed it.
Verify delivery at three levels
1. Intune service status
Open the profile and review device status, user status, per-setting status, pending states, conflicts, and error codes. Trigger a sync from Intune, Company Portal, or Windows Settings where available.

2. Edge’s effective policy
- Open
edge://policyin the managed Edge profile. - Select Reload policies.
- Search for
DefaultSearchProviderEnabled,DefaultSearchProviderSearchURL, andDefaultSearchProviderSuggestURL. - Confirm the exact values, policy source, and absence of an error or conflicting value.
3. Windows diagnostic events
In Event Viewer, open Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider > Admin. The HTMD procedure references Event IDs 813 and 814 as useful client-side indicators. They are diagnostic clues, not universal proof that Edge is using the setting.
4. Functional test
- Open a new tab in the same profile shown in
edge://policy. - Type a distinctive, non-sensitive phrase in the address bar.
- Confirm provider suggestions appear.
- Submit the search and verify that the final result uses the expected search URL.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect suggestions
No provider suggestions appear
- Confirm
DefaultSearchProviderEnabledis enabled. - Confirm
DefaultSearchProviderSearchURLis present and contains{searchTerms}. - Confirm
DefaultSearchProviderSuggestURLis present and contains the same token. - Check all three values in
edge://policyfor the profile being tested. - Verify the device has checked in and the profile is not pending, conflicting, or failed.
- Test DNS resolution, proxy access, firewall rules, TLS inspection, and certificate trust for the endpoint.
- Confirm the endpoint returns a response format Edge can consume and does not require unsupported authentication.
- Retest with a work/school or unsigned profile rather than a profile signed in with a personal Microsoft account.
Search works, but suggestions do not
This normally narrows the problem to the suggestion policy or endpoint: it may be missing, malformed, assigned to another profile, blocked by the network, or overridden by a higher-precedence policy. The normal search URL and suggestion URL are independent settings.
Only history suggestions appear
That is consistent with Edge having no effective search-engine suggestion URL. Local history and favorites can remain available even when provider suggestions are not.
The user can change the provider
Check whether the policies were configured as recommended rather than mandatory. Microsoft notes that recommended behavior may not add the organization’s provider when a user already selected another one; use the appropriate mandatory configuration, and consider ManagedSearchEngines when you need a provider listed for selection.

The policy is absent from edge://policy
Check assignment scope, enrollment and check-in, profile targeting, policy conflicts, and whether another management channel is writing the setting. A portal assignment alone does not guarantee client application.

Address-bar text can be sent to the configured search provider to generate recommendations. Microsoft describes this behavior in its privacy statement. Treat suggestion traffic as a data flow: review provider logging and retention, geographic processing, regulatory requirements, proxy visibility, and data-processing agreements. Tell users not to enter passwords, secrets, confidential project names, or sensitive personal information in the address bar when suggestions are enabled.
For an internal endpoint, also secure certificates, authentication, rate limits, availability, and query handling. Verify that the service is authorized to receive automated suggestion requests and that its terms permit this use.
Roll back the deployment
- Remove the pilot or production groups from the profile assignment.
- Set the three settings to Not configured in another controlling profile when necessary; do not delete a profile blindly if other settings depend on it.
- Synchronize affected devices and users.
- Reload
edge://policyand confirm the old values are no longer effective. - Repeat the address-bar test and review Intune status for stale or conflicting assignments.
For organizations choosing a management method, Intune suits cloud-first Microsoft environments; Group Policy suits traditional Active Directory estates; Configuration Manager fits established hybrid deployments. The relevant Edge policy catalog is available at Microsoft Edge enterprise policies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I configure only DefaultSearchProviderSuggestURL?
No. Microsoft’s policy dependency requires the default provider to be enabled and a valid DefaultSearchProviderSearchURL to be configured as well.
Can an internal search engine provide suggestions?
Yes, if its endpoint is reachable by clients, accepts the rendered query, returns a format Edge supports, and meets your authentication, privacy, and governance requirements.
Does this setting apply to personal Microsoft accounts?
Microsoft’s current policy reference says DefaultSearchProviderSuggestURL does not apply to profiles signed in with a Microsoft account.
Can I deploy the setting with Group Policy instead of Intune?
Yes. Microsoft documents the same Edge policy and Windows registry mapping for Group Policy-based management.
