Microsoft Edge’s Explain this error feature uses Copilot to explain errors and warnings that already appear in DevTools. It can offer useful context and debugging ideas, but it does not monitor every browser problem, establish a definitive root cause, or automatically fix code. The feature first appeared in Edge 120 in December 2023; Microsoft continues to document it, but it is not a new 2026 launch.
What Edge’s Copilot error feature does
When JavaScript or a browser API produces a message in DevTools’ Console, Copilot can turn that message into a natural-language explanation in the Edge sidebar. It is an explainer for a selected Console message—not a general browser-wide error detector. Microsoft introduced the capability as an experimental DevTools integration on December 14, 2023, starting with Edge 120. Microsoft’s launch announcement described examples such as CORS failures, invalid JSON responses, circular-structure serialization errors, and attempts to modify non-extensible objects.
The feature covers Console errors and warnings. Copilot can also explain selected source code in the Sources tool. Its value is as a translation and investigation aid: it may clarify unfamiliar terminology, suggest possible causes, and point to useful checks. The developer still needs to determine whether those suggestions fit the application and reproduce the issue.
Requirements and supported environments
Microsoft’s current DevTools instructions say to sign in to Edge and make sure the Copilot icon is visible in the browser toolbar. The documented workflow is for a standard browser window. The feature is not supported in InPrivate windows, Kids Mode, DevTools attached to an Edge WebView2 control, or DevTools in a standalone Progressive Web App window.

If the Copilot icon is missing, open Settings and more (…), then go to Settings > Sidebar > Copilot and turn on Show Copilot. Labels or availability may vary with browser configuration, organizational policy, account, and region.
How to use “Explain this error” in DevTools
- Open the page or local development site where the problem occurs. Sign in to Edge if prompted and confirm Copilot is visible in the toolbar.
- Open DevTools by right-clicking the page and choosing Inspect, or use Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS.
- Select the Console tab. If the relevant message is not there yet, reproduce the problem while DevTools is open.
- Find the relevant error or warning and select Ask Copilot: “Explain this error” beside it.
- Read the response in the Edge sidebar. Ask a focused follow-up if useful—for example, “What should I inspect next?” or “What evidence would distinguish a CORS problem from a failed server response?”
- Check any proposed explanation against the stack trace, application code, runtime values, and Network panel before changing code.
The button is not necessarily available for every Console message. If it does not appear, check that you are in the Console, that the message is an error or warning, and that you are using a supported standard browser window.

How to ask Copilot to explain selected code
To get an explanation of a particular code section, open DevTools’ Sources tool, highlight the lines, right-click the selection, and choose Copilot: Explain these lines of code. Copilot continues the discussion in the sidebar. This explains the selected snippet; it does not establish how the entire application behaves.
How to evaluate an explanation
Copilot’s response is a generated explanation, not a formal diagnostic report or a tested patch. Microsoft warns that responses may be incorrect or surprising. A plausible explanation can still be wrong, especially when a Console message is only a downstream symptom or when the application relies on complex frameworks, build tooling, or server-side behavior.

Use the explanation to form a hypothesis, then test it with the evidence available in DevTools and your project:
- Capture the exact error text and stack trace; identify the first relevant frame in your own code.
- Inspect the source line and surrounding code, including the runtime values involved.
- Check the Network panel for failed requests, response status, and response content.
- Reproduce the issue and change one thing at a time. Confirm the result with a repeatable test.
- If Copilot’s account of the error seems off, ask what observation would disprove its explanation, then check that observation yourself.
Do not blindly apply advice that would disable browser security controls, CORS protections, authentication, or validation. For intermittent failures, security-sensitive behavior, or issues requiring backend logs and deployment details, the Console explanation alone cannot verify the cause.

Privacy when debugging with Copilot
Depending on Edge settings and the feature being used, Copilot may use browsing context such as a URL, page title, page content or screenshots, open tabs, and browsing history. Microsoft explains the Context Clues control in its Edge context guidance. To review it, open … > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Privacy, then turn Context Clues on or off. Turning it off prevents Copilot from using browsing data for website-based requests, though some responses may be less relevant.
The exact context available can depend on settings, account type, organizational policy, region, and the Copilot feature. Before using it on private or production pages, follow your organization’s rules and redact credentials, tokens, customer data, internal URLs, and proprietary code from any prompt or context you provide.

Troubleshooting when the option is unavailable
The Copilot icon is not visible
Check Settings > Sidebar > Copilot > Show Copilot and confirm that you are signed in. A managed browser policy or account and regional availability may also affect what appears.
There is no “Explain this error” button
Make sure DevTools is on the Console tab and the message is an error or warning. Reload the page or reproduce the problem after opening DevTools. The control may not be shown for every message; Edge version, configuration, or organizational policy can also affect availability.
You are using an unsupported window or app
InPrivate, Kids Mode, WebView2-attached DevTools, and standalone PWA DevTools are documented exclusions. Try the workflow in a standard Edge browser window rather than treating the missing control as proof that DevTools is malfunctioning.
When Copilot helps—and what to use alongside it
It is particularly useful when a Console message contains an unfamiliar browser or JavaScript concept and you want a quick explanation without leaving the debugging workflow. It can also help learners generate questions to investigate. For diagnosis, pair it with DevTools itself: the Console and stack trace show the reported failure, Sources helps inspect code and set breakpoints, and Network reveals request and response behavior. Project tests, linters, type checkers, and server logs can provide evidence the sidebar explanation cannot.

Microsoft retired “Copilot Mode” as a named broader browsing experience in a May 13, 2026 Edge update, while continuing to integrate Copilot into Edge. That separate change does not make the DevTools explainer a new feature or establish a different requirement for it. See Microsoft’s Edge update for that broader product change.
