Intune’s Recommended Cadence setting controls which software-update path users on supervised iPhone and iPad devices are offered: updates for their current major iOS or iPadOS version, the latest major upgrade, or both. It does not set an installation deadline. To stage a rollout, assign the offer and appropriate deferrals to test and production groups; if devices must install an update by a deadline, configure a separate Intune Declarative Device Management (DDM) enforcement policy.
What Recommended Cadence controls
Apple’s recommended cadence setting changes which update choices are presented on supervised iPhone and iPad devices. Administrators can keep users on the current major-version track, offer the newer major upgrade, or make both paths available. Apple says the current-major-only option is available for a limited period; during that period, users can still receive important security updates while the organization tests and approves a major upgrade.

This is an offer and upgrade-path control, not a command to install at a particular time. Apple’s cadence description applies to supervised iPhone and iPad, not macOS. Microsoft’s Intune DDM software-update configuration documentation lists support for iOS/iPadOS 17.0 and later and macOS 14.0 and later, with Device Enrollment and Automated Device Enrollment supported. Check availability in your tenant and for the device’s platform before building a policy.
Choose the right control for each rollout decision
| Control | What it determines | What it does not determine |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended Cadence | Whether supervised iPhone and iPad users are offered current-major updates, a newer major upgrade, or both. | It does not set a mandatory installation deadline. |
| Time-based deferral | How long a release is held back before it is offered or automatically initiated, depending on the policy and platform. Apple documents custom deferrals of 1 to 90 days for supervised devices. | It is not a specified-version installation deadline. Deferring a release also delays Background Security Improvements that depend on that version. |
| Intune DDM enforcement | When an eligible update is to be enforced: after a configured delay and local install time for the latest eligible version, or by a target date and time for a specified OS or build. | The delay is an enforcement-timing control, not an update-visibility setting. |
| Assignment groups | Which devices receive a policy, enabling separate test, pilot, and production cohorts. | Group assignment alone does not determine what version is offered or when installation is enforced. |
Apple documents using a test group and different deferrals for different groups to phase updates. It does not prescribe a universal ring size or a fixed number of days for each stage.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Plan a staged rollout
- Define the cohorts and constraints. Inventory managed devices, supported OS baselines, app and workflow dependencies, maintenance windows, and escalation criteria. Separate shared, kiosk, and mission-critical devices if reboot impact differs.
- Start with a test group. Assign the relevant settings to a limited cohort. If the new major release still needs validation, keep users on the current-major path so they can receive its minor updates while testing continues.
- Set a deferral that fits validation. Choose a delay based on the time needed to test apps and workflows. Different assignments or deferral values can hold broader cohorts back while the test group evaluates the release; Apple’s documented 1-to-90-day range is a supported range, not a recommended target.
- Expand after checks pass. Widen assignments in stages. For each cohort, decide whether users should remain on current-major updates, be offered the new major upgrade, or see both options.
- Add enforcement only when installation is mandatory. Configure a separate DDM policy for the latest eligible version or a specified OS/build version and deadline. Communicate expected restart and interruption behavior to users before the deadline.
- Verify completion on devices. Review software-update status and actual OS versions after assignment. A successfully installed policy is not proof that the operating system has updated.
Choose stage lengths according to change risk, app-validation capacity, security urgency, and the business cost of reboot downtime. This is an operational approach, not a vendor-mandated schedule.
Configure DDM software-update settings in Intune
Microsoft’s documented configuration path is a Settings Catalog policy for iOS/iPadOS or macOS under Declarative Device Management > Software Update. DDM availability varies by platform and OS version; the documented minimums are iOS/iPadOS 17.0 and macOS 14.0, with Device Enrollment or Automated Device Enrollment.

Enforce the latest eligible version
- Create or edit the appropriate platform Settings Catalog policy and open Declarative Device Management > Software Update.
- Configure Delay in Days and Install Time. The delay sets the enforcement target date; depending on the policy, its calculation starts from Apple’s release posting date or the policy configuration date. It does not determine when the update first appears to users.
- Enter Install Time using the device’s local clock and a 24-hour value, such as
18:00.
Microsoft notes that an update may install earlier if the device is idle and that enforcement can override other update settings. Do not treat the configured time as a guarantee that every device will install at that exact moment.
Enforce a specified OS or build by a deadline
- In the same DDM software-update settings area, set Target OS Version and, if needed, Target Build Version.
- Set Target Date Time. It uses the device’s local time zone, unlike the UTC timing described for legacy iOS/iPadOS MDM deferral policies in Microsoft’s planning guidance.
- Assign the policy to the intended device cohort and communicate the deadline and restart implications.
If the target build does not match the selected OS version, the OS version takes precedence. Microsoft documents a one-minute countdown followed by a forced install and restart at the deadline if the user has not started the update. If the device is powered off when the deadline passes, a one-hour grace period begins after it powers on. Device state, eligibility, connectivity, authorization, and other conditions can affect completion.

Monitor status and handle failures
In Intune, a policy reporting Success means the configuration policy installed on the device; it does not mean the OS update completed. Check the targeted devices’ OS versions and software-update status. Apple’s DDM status reporting distinguishes waiting, downloading, preparing, and installing states and can provide error information when installation cannot complete.

- If a device remains on its prior version, investigate power, network connectivity, available storage, user prompts, passcode requirements, and app-compatibility blockers.
- If a targeted-version policy remains assigned after the device has advanced beyond its target, remove or update it. Intune may treat a stale target as an attempted downgrade.
- When troubleshooting older deployments, distinguish legacy MDM update policies from DDM. Microsoft says Apple deprecated MDM-based update workloads and recommends DDM; its legacy iOS/iPadOS deferral guidance describes policies that could hide updates for up to 90 days but did not control installation timing.
