What the Map Room does
A Map Room is a fixed fast-travel point you build in the world. Once it is placed, interacting with it lets you choose an obelisk you have already attuned. The destination list is therefore based on your exploration, not on every location being available automatically.

The Obelisk entry records 10 obelisks across the map. In practical terms, that gives you up to 10 destination choices after you have visited and activated the corresponding sites. The Map Room does not discover an obelisk for you and does not bypass the attunement step.
Think of the structure as a departure terminal rather than a two-way portal. You leave from the Map Room and arrive at an obelisk. You do not appear back at the Map Room by interacting with that obelisk. Your return must be handled by ordinary travel, another travel option available on your server, or a previously prepared route.

Unlock Cartographer at The Unnamed City
The Map Room is gated by the Cartographer knowledge. This is a location-based unlock, so a character level milestone is not the trigger.
- Travel to The Unnamed City.
- Enter The Archives.
- Speak with The Archivist and learn the Cartographer knowledge.
- Open your knowledge and crafting interfaces to confirm that the Map Room recipe is now available.
The knowledge page states that the Map Room can be crafted at any character level after Cartographer has been learned. If the recipe is missing, check that you interacted with The Archivist rather than merely entering The Archives, then reopen the crafting interface. On a server running a different game version, labels or prerequisites can change; the current in-game knowledge panel is the final authority for that server.

Map Room recipe and required materials
One complete recipe produces one Map Room. You need a Construction Hammer to craft it.

The Conan Exiles Wiki records 3,170 crafting experience for the recipe. Treat that number as version-sensitive: it is a published wiki value accessed in 2026, not a guarantee for every live build or server configuration. If experience totals matter to your progression plan, check the value shown by the current game client.
Before starting the craft, place all four ingredients in the inventory or storage location your Construction Hammer can access. The recipe is expensive enough that discovering a missing component after reaching a remote building site can turn a short construction job into an unnecessary trip. Keep the finished Map Room in a secure inventory slot until you have selected and tested the final foundation area; it cannot be picked up after placement.
Prepare the building site before crafting
The Map Room is unusually large compared with many ordinary placeables. The wiki describes it as fitting in a room seven foundations by seven foundations, with two walls of height. That footprint is a planning dimension, not a suggestion to squeeze it into an existing corner.

Reserve the full footprint
Clear a square area before placing the structure. Count the available foundation spaces in both directions and check the highest nearby terrain, pillars, stairs and decorative pieces. A site that appears open from ground level can still block the placement outline when the camera is raised.
Use elevation to improve the placement view
Placement can be easier when you gain some elevation and look down at a steeper angle. A nearby foundation step, platform or temporary tower can give you the viewing angle needed to see the entire footprint and align it with the rest of your base.
Test before roofing or decorating
Do not finish the room around the intended location first. A roof can interfere with the initial placement even though roof pieces can be added after the Map Room is down. Lay out the foundations and walls, test the Map Room position, and only then complete the roof, doors and decoration.
Choose a location you can reach safely
Place the structure where you can approach it without climbing over storage, crafting stations or defensive pieces. You will use the Map Room as a departure point, so a clear path reduces accidental interactions and makes repeated trips faster. A safe, accessible interior is usually more practical than an exposed platform, provided the room has enough clearance.

Build the Map Room step by step
- Learn Cartographer. Complete the interaction with The Archivist in The Archives at The Unnamed City.
- Collect the recipe materials. Have 200 Corrupted Stone, 35 Iron Reinforcement, 75 Alchemical Base and 50 Crystal available, along with a Construction Hammer.
- Craft the item. Select the Map Room recipe and wait for the single structure to finish crafting.
- Move to the prepared site. Stand where you can see the whole proposed footprint and remove temporary obstructions.
- Use the construction placement preview. Rotate and adjust the structure until its foundation area fits without clipping into walls, terrain or other objects.
- Confirm placement. Place the Map Room only after checking the approach path and overhead clearance.
- Finish the room. Add roof pieces and any surrounding construction after the Map Room has been successfully placed.
If the placement preview refuses to turn green, do not assume that the recipe or knowledge is wrong. Large structures commonly fail because one corner overlaps another building piece, the ground is uneven, or the camera angle is hiding an obstruction. Move back, raise your viewpoint, clear the entire square and try again.
Attune obelisks so they appear as destinations
Building the Map Room does not populate its destination list. Each obelisk must be activated separately.

- Travel to an obelisk you want to use.
- Approach the obelisk until its interaction prompt appears.
- Interact with it to attune your character to that obelisk.
- Repeat the process at each of the other obelisks you want available.
- Return to your Map Room and open its travel interaction to see the attuned destinations.
Only the obelisks you have personally attuned should be treated as selectable destinations. If an expected location is absent, revisit that obelisk and complete the interaction instead of rebuilding the Map Room. The recorded map contains 10 obelisks, so you can expand the list as your exploration progresses.
Attunement is best handled as a route-planning task. Mark the obelisks you have already activated, carry enough supplies for the journey, and avoid assuming that a nearby structure or visual effect means the interaction has completed. Confirm the attunement at the site before leaving; otherwise you may return to the Map Room and find no new destination.

After at least one obelisk has been attuned, stand at the Map Room and interact with it. The available destinations are the attuned obelisks. Select one, confirm the destination, and complete the travel prompt.
Do not begin the trip until you have decided what happens after arrival. The destination is an obelisk, not another Map Room, and the travel action is one way. The official rule is stated plainly in Funcom’s Conan Exiles Update 33 article from 2018: “You can travel from the maproom to an obelisk, but not the other way around.”
Plan the return before departing
- Decide whether your objective can be completed as a one-way excursion.
- Identify the route you will use to get back to your base or to another safe location.
- Carry the equipment and supplies needed for the return journey, not just the activity at the obelisk.
- Avoid leaving valuable cargo in storage solely because you expect to teleport back; the Map Room does not provide that return trip.
Use destinations for movement, not storage
The Map Room changes where your character appears; it does not move containers, thralls, mounts or buildings. Prepare your arrival point and treat the obelisk area as a field destination. If you need to bring materials home, account for the overland trip that follows arrival.
Placement and demolition behavior
The structure is permanent in the practical sense that it cannot be picked up directly into your inventory after placement. Removing it requires dismantling or demolishing it through the building interface.

When removed, a Map Room can return some or all of its materials. The exact recovery should be treated as variable rather than guaranteed: do not place one casually expecting a full refund. If you are testing positions, test the footprint with temporary construction first and commit the crafted item only when the site is ready.
Demolition also removes your convenient departure point. Before taking down an existing Map Room, verify that you have another way to organize travel and that you are not about to strand yourself far from your preferred base route.
Troubleshoot the most common problems

How to decide whether a Map Room fits your travel plan
Evaluate the structure against five practical questions before spending the materials:
- Destination control: Are the fixed, attuned obelisks where you need to go?
- Directionality: Can you handle one-way travel and arrange your own return?
- Setup cost: Do you have the full recipe and a secure place to build it?
- Map coverage: Have you attuned enough of the 10 recorded obelisks to make the destination list useful?
- Footprint: Can your base spare a room approximately seven foundations by seven foundations and two walls high?
This framework prevents a common mismatch: a player may have enough materials but no suitable room, or a large base may have space but no attuned destinations. Solve both problems before treating the Map Room as operational.
Version and server considerations
The recipe, unlock location and one-way behavior described here are the established Map Room mechanics. Numerical details such as the 3,170 crafting-experience value can change with a game update, and server configuration can affect progression or building rules. When the live client disagrees with a printed value, follow the current in-game recipe and knowledge panels.
The 2018 Funcom wording about one-way travel remains the clearest statement of the intended behavior. The Conan Exiles Wiki’s 2026-accessed entry supplies the 10-obelisk count, footprint guidance and crafting-experience figure. Use those numbers for planning, but confirm any version-sensitive display in the game you are actually playing.
A practical operating routine
For a reliable routine, unlock Cartographer first, prepare the entire construction site, craft and place the Map Room, then make an attunement route through the obelisks you expect to use. After every attunement trip, return to the Map Room and verify that the destination appears before relying on it for a longer expedition. Keep the return plan attached to every departure decision: selecting an obelisk solves the outbound leg only.
