To get a Sniffer Egg, brush Suspicious Sand in Warm Ocean Ruins with a Brush. Place the egg on Moss for an approximately 10-minute hatch, or on another block for approximately 20 minutes. Once two Sniffers are adults, feed each one Torchflower Seeds; they drop another Sniffer Egg instead of producing a Snifflet directly. Sniffers then dig up Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods, which let you grow Torchflowers and Pitcher Plants.

| Where is the first egg? | Suspicious Sand in Warm Ocean Ruins; use a Brush. |
| Fastest documented hatch surface | Moss, approximately 10 minutes. |
| Hatch time on other blocks | Approximately 20 minutes. |
| How do two adults breed? | Feed both adult Sniffers Torchflower Seeds. |
| What does breeding produce? | A Sniffer Egg, not an immediately spawned Snifflet. |
| What can Sniffers dig up? | Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods. |
| Which editions use these mechanics? | Java Edition 1.20 and Bedrock Edition’s Trails & Tales release. |
The Sniffer is therefore a progression mob: archaeology gives you the initial egg, hatching gives you the first Sniffer, and breeding turns that first discovery into a renewable population and a source of ancient plant seeds.
What you need before searching
A Brush
A Brush is the required archaeology tool. Without one, Suspicious Sand cannot be searched in the intended way, so make it before travelling to ocean ruins. Keep it in your hotbar while exploring; ordinary sand and Suspicious Sand look similar enough that stopping to identify the block before breaking it prevents accidental loss.

A safe route to Warm Ocean Ruins
Warm Ocean Ruins are underwater structures. Bring the normal equipment you use for underwater exploration and a way to mark your route back to shore or your base. The important requirement for the Sniffer is the structure’s Suspicious Sand, not a particular biome-side farm or a special breeding enclosure.
A temporary hatch area
Prepare a small, protected space at home before you return with an egg. Reserve at least one Moss block for the quickest documented hatch, plus enough open ground for the Sniffer that emerges. A controlled area makes it easier to see the egg, prevent accidental block updates and keep later seed collection organized.
How to find a Sniffer Egg in Warm Ocean Ruins
- Craft or obtain a Brush. Put it where you can select it quickly.
- Locate Warm Ocean Ruins. Search the underwater ruin structures for Suspicious Sand rather than regular sand.
- Position yourself carefully. Work close to the suspicious block so dropped items cannot disappear into a cave, current or deep water.
- Use the Brush on Suspicious Sand. Brush the block instead of mining it. The official Trails & Tales documentation identifies a Sniffer Egg as a possible archaeology find there.
- Collect the egg and leave the site safely. Once the egg is in your inventory, return to the hatch area you prepared.
Archaeology is the only way to obtain the first egg when you have no adult Sniffers. The distinction matters: breeding is repeatable, but breeding requires two adults, so an untouched world needs the Warm Ocean Ruins route first.
If you keep finding ordinary sand
- Check that the block is Suspicious Sand, not a normal sand block.
- Confirm that you are searching Warm Ocean Ruins rather than another underwater structure.
- Use the Brush on the block; breaking suspicious sand does not substitute for brushing.
- Search additional ruin sections if the first suspicious block produces a different archaeology item. The documentation describes the egg as a possible find, not a guaranteed result from every block.
Hatching a Sniffer Egg
Fast route: place it on Moss
Place the Sniffer Egg directly on Moss when you want the shorter documented hatch time. The Bedrock Trails & Tales documentation states that an egg on Moss hatches in approximately 10 minutes. “Approximately” is important: treat the figure as a documented target, not a stopwatch guarantee for every world or server condition.

Other surfaces
An egg placed on any other block takes approximately 20 minutes. If you have no Moss available, the egg still works; the trade-off is the longer wait. There is no need to restart the search simply because your first hatch platform is made from another material.
Reliable placement procedure
- Build a small pen or enclosed room in a safe location.
- Place one Moss block where you can watch it easily.
- Put the Sniffer Egg on the Moss block.
- Keep the area available while it hatches. Avoid removing the supporting block or enclosing the egg inside a space you cannot reach.
- After roughly 10 minutes on Moss, look for the newly hatched Sniffer and keep it inside the prepared area.
For a non-Moss setup, follow the same steps on your chosen block and allow roughly 20 minutes. Using a visible pen is practical because it separates the vulnerable egg from normal building, mining and travel activity.
From one Sniffer to a renewable population
The first egg produces one Sniffer. To create a repeatable supply, you need two adult Sniffers. Feed each adult Torchflower Seeds. When the pair breeds, the result is a dropped Sniffer Egg; the game does not immediately spawn a Snifflet beside the parents.
Breeding steps
- Hatch and protect the first Sniffer.
- Obtain a second Sniffer by hatching another archaeological egg, or by hatching an egg produced through breeding once you already have a pair.
- Wait until both Sniffers are adults.
- Select Torchflower Seeds and feed one adult.
- Feed the second adult Torchflower Seeds.
- Collect the Sniffer Egg that the breeding pair drops.
- Place that egg on Moss for the approximately 10-minute route, or on another block for approximately 20 minutes.
This egg-drop behavior changes how you plan a farm. A breeding pair does not create an instant baby that follows the adults; every new Sniffer begins as an egg that must be placed and hatched.

Why Torchflower Seeds matter twice
Torchflower Seeds are both a breeding item and a crop seed. Your first Sniffers can dig up more of them, allowing you to maintain the breeding loop while also expanding Torchflower fields. Keep a reserve rather than planting every seed immediately: without two seeds available for the adults, you cannot trigger the next breeding event.
What Sniffers dig up
Sniffers search suitable grass- and dirt-like ground and can dig up two documented ancient items: Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods. These are the complete outputs described for the Sniffer’s ancient-seed behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Sniffer output | Planting result | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Torchflower Seeds | Torchflowers when planted on Farmland | Crop growing and feeding adult Sniffers for breeding |
| Pitcher Pods | Pitcher Crops on Farmland; a mature crop yields a Pitcher Plant | Growing the ancient Pitcher Plant decorative crop |
How to set up a seed-collection pen
- Fence or otherwise contain your Sniffers so dug-up items remain nearby.
- Provide a patch of grass- or dirt-like ground where they can search.
- Keep the patch clear enough that you can see and pick up the items they uncover.
- Place a hopper or storage system only if it does not interfere with your ability to enter and maintain the pen; the essential step is simply collecting the dropped seeds and pods.
- Move Torchflower Seeds to a reserve chest before planting the rest, so breeding remains possible.
The Sniffer’s digging is the source of the ancient seeds; planting a Torchflower or Pitcher Plant does not itself replace the need to collect the corresponding seed or pod first.
Growing Torchflowers and Pitcher Plants
Torchflowers
Plant Torchflower Seeds on Farmland. The resulting crop grows into Torchflowers. Because the same seed feeds adults, divide your inventory into two roles: a breeding reserve and a planting supply. This prevents a large decorative field from consuming the items needed to produce another egg.

Pitcher Plants
Plant a Pitcher Pod on Farmland to grow a Pitcher Crop. When the crop matures, it yields a Pitcher Plant. The pod and the mature plant are different stages, so do not expect a freshly planted pod to be the final decorative block immediately.

Organizing a practical garden
- Keep Torchflowers and Pitcher Crops in separate rows so pods are not mistaken for seeds.
- Use signs or item frames to label a breeding reserve.
- Leave a small path around the Farmland for harvesting and replanting.
- Put the Sniffer pen beside, rather than inside, the crop rows; this keeps digging space and farmland maintenance separate.
Archaeology versus breeding: which route should you use?
| Goal | Best route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Get your first Sniffer | Brush Suspicious Sand in Warm Ocean Ruins | You need an egg before any adult pair exists. |
| Get additional eggs after two adults | Feed Torchflower Seeds to both adults | Breeding drops an egg at home, avoiding another ruin expedition. |
| Hatch as quickly as documented | Place the egg on Moss | Approximately 10 minutes instead of approximately 20 minutes on other blocks. |
| Build a plant supply | Let Sniffers search grass- and dirt-like ground | They can dig up Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods. |
Use archaeology as an expedition and breeding as your long-term production method. Once a pair is established, the breeding route is easier to repeat because eggs are produced where the adults live.

Troubleshooting common Sniffer problems
“My egg has not hatched yet.”
Check the surface first. Moss corresponds to the approximately 10-minute hatch time; any other block corresponds to approximately 20 minutes. If the egg was moved, the waiting period can begin again, so leave it in place and allow the full approximate interval for its surface.
“I fed two Sniffers, but no baby appeared.”
That is expected. Two adults drop a Sniffer Egg rather than spawning a Snifflet immediately. Find the dropped egg, place it on your chosen surface and wait for it to hatch.
“I cannot breed my Sniffers.”
- Verify that both mobs are adults.
- Use Torchflower Seeds, not a Torchflower and not a Pitcher Pod.
- Feed both adults individually.
- Check the ground around the pair for the dropped egg after the breeding action.
“My Sniffer is not producing seeds.”
Give it suitable grass- or dirt-like ground to search and enough room to move its nose into the ground. The documented outputs are occasional finds, so an empty pass does not mean the mob is broken. Collect items from the floor around the digging area before they are hidden by other drops or terrain.
“I lost the egg in the ruins.”
Search the immediate area before leaving, especially around water currents and uneven seabeds. For future archaeology trips, work one suspicious block at a time and collect each result before moving to the next.
A complete first-to-farm progression
- Craft a Brush and travel to Warm Ocean Ruins.
- Brush Suspicious Sand until you obtain a Sniffer Egg.
- Return to a protected base pen.
- Place the egg on Moss and wait approximately 10 minutes, or use another block and allow approximately 20 minutes.
- Repeat the archaeology trip or use another available egg until you have two adult Sniffers.
- Feed Torchflower Seeds to both adults and collect the dropped egg.
- Hatch that egg to expand the population without another ruin expedition.
- Provide grass- and dirt-like ground so Sniffers can dig up Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods.
- Plant Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods on Farmland.
- Keep a Torchflower-Seed reserve for the next breeding cycle while harvesting Torchflowers and mature Pitcher Plants.
Why the Sniffer was added
The Sniffer won 55% of the Minecraft Live 2022 mob vote, according to Minecraft’s 2023 feature article about the mob. Its distinctive role is archaeological and botanical rather than combat-focused: the egg is discovered through ruins, and the adult mob uncovers plants that cannot be obtained through ordinary crop progression. That design is why the most efficient Sniffer base combines three spaces—a hatch pen, an adult breeding area and a separate ancient-seed garden.
