Start with the job you need the armor to perform, not the largest armor number. A useful decision order is:
- Choose a weight class. Light armor favors mobility and lower encumbrance; medium and heavy armor exchange additional weight for more protection and different stamina behavior.
- Match the primary bonus to your build. Strength, agility, weapon-damage, stamina, vitality and carrying-capacity bonuses can matter more than a small difference in armor rating.
- Check the climate. A set that works in a temperate base may be unsuitable in a hot desert or cold mountain route if it lacks the needed heat or cold resistance.
- Price the acquisition route. A craftable set is dependable during progression. Dungeon, boss, trader, downloadable-content or recipe-drop armor may be stronger for a specific role but harder to replace.
- Compare the complete set. Include every piece’s armor, stat bonuses, temperature protection, weight and stamina implications rather than judging the chest piece alone.
This method produces different answers for a gatherer, a strength fighter, an agility archer and a player preparing for a boss. It also prevents an outdated armor table from becoming a bad recommendation after a balance patch.

Best armor choices by use case
The following recommendations are role-based starting points. They describe what to prioritize and the trade-off to accept; they are not a permanent ranking of every item in the game.
| Use case | Best starting direction | Why it works | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early leveling | Basic light, medium or heavy set from Armorer | Recipes are tied directly to early progression and can be made as soon as the feat is available. | Basic sets may lack the specialized bonuses of cultural or endgame armor. |
| Strength build | Armor with strength or strength-weapon bonuses | Improves the build’s intended damage profile instead of paying weight for irrelevant stats. | Confirm heat or cold resistance and the stamina cost of the chosen weight class. |
| Agility build | Armor with agility or agility-weapon bonuses | Supports agile weapons and keeps the build focused on its main attribute. | Do not sacrifice the climate protection needed for the route you travel. |
| Exploration and hauling | Utility-focused armor with carrying-capacity and stamina bonuses | More load room and endurance can save repeated trips and improve long journeys. | A utility set may provide less combat protection than a dedicated heavy set. |
| General PvE | High-protection armor with useful utility bonuses | Extra protection gives a forgiving margin against ordinary enemies and mistakes. | Weight, stamina behavior and repair costs can make it inefficient for long travel. |
| Endgame | Epic or perfected version that complements your complete build | Improved basic armor and Epic cultural armor let you optimize bonuses after level 60. | Verify the current feat cost, materials and tooltip after updates. |
| All-rounder candidate | Pride of Aesir, if its current tooltip fits your character | Published comparisons identify it as a strong general-purpose option with a package of armor, stamina, carrying-capacity, weapon-damage and temperature-related benefits across the relevant sets. | Those figures are version-sensitive; inspect the live item rather than treating an old guide’s numbers as permanent. |
Light, medium and heavy armor explained
Light armor
Light armor is the natural choice when movement, low encumbrance and stamina management matter more than maximum protection. It suits characters who travel constantly, gather resources, reposition during fights or rely on attacks that already reward agility. The lower weight can also leave more of your carrying capacity available for supplies.

A light set with the right attribute and temperature bonuses may be more effective for an agility character than a heavier set with a higher armor rating but no useful build synergy. Check the actual stamina behavior in your current client, especially if you use sprinting, climbing or repeated dodges.
Medium armor
Medium armor is the compromise option. It gives more protection than light armor while avoiding the full burden of heavy equipment. It is often a sensible transition when a new character begins taking harder hits but still needs to travel, climb and carry materials.
Choose medium when neither extreme is attractive: you want a meaningful defensive increase, but the encumbrance and stamina behavior of heavy armor would interfere with your normal combat loop. The correct answer depends on your other equipment and attributes, so test a complete outfit rather than one isolated piece.
Heavy armor
Heavy armor is the safer direction for players who expect sustained PvE damage, close-range fighting or boss encounters. Its additional protection can reduce the cost of a mistake, particularly when you cannot avoid every hit.
Recommended Free Tools
The price is weight and a different stamina profile. Heavy armor can reduce the room available for loot and make long-distance travel less comfortable. It is a poor choice for a hauling run if the defensive gain is never used. Before crafting, check whether your strength, vitality, stamina and carrying-capacity bonuses compensate for that burden.
Armor progression and feat gates
Funcom’s armor-progression guidance establishes three important milestones:
Rank #2
- The treacherous waters of the Black Coast are filled with reavers and corsairs, as well as the infamous she-devil of the sea, Bêlit - the Queen of the Black Coast.
- New Adventures make these hazardous Encounters even more beneficial for Conan's foes.
- Delve deeper into the mighty Kingdoms with the Nemedian Chronicles expansion
- These expansions are contained in one box. The front cover features Queen of the Black Coast art and the back features Nemedian Chronicles art.
- Level 10: You can unlock the Armorer feat, which provides recipes for basic light, medium and heavy armor.
- Every 10 levels: Additional armor archetypes become available as your character progresses.
- Level 60: The Epic Armors feat becomes available. It unlocks Perfected Lining and improved basic armor, and Epic versions of cultural armor can also be unlocked with feat points.
These gates make armor selection a progression decision rather than a one-time purchase. A set that is ideal at level 20 may be wasteful to pursue shortly before a level-based unlock gives you a better option.
How to craft armor step by step
- Reach the required level. At level 10, open the Feats menu and unlock Armorer. Later armor archetypes and Epic Armors require their own level and feat-point investment.
- Decide on light, medium or heavy. Base the decision on your current stamina, encumbrance, survivability and activity. Do not assume that the armor class you eventually want is the one you should wear while leveling.
- Learn the recipe. Select the relevant armor recipe in the Feats menu. If a cultural or specialized recipe is not listed, it may require another feat, a separate acquisition route or a different character level.
- Inspect the crafting station. Open the Armorer’s Bench or the station shown by the recipe and confirm the exact materials, fuel or station requirements displayed by your client. Material names and quantities should be taken from the live recipe, not copied from an old table.
- Craft a complete test set. Make enough pieces to evaluate the outfit as a whole. A single high-armor chest piece cannot tell you whether the finished set has useful bonuses, acceptable weight or adequate climate protection.
- Read every tooltip. Record armor, weight, attribute bonuses, weapon-damage bonuses, stamina, carrying capacity and heat or cold resistance before replacing your current outfit.
- Test it in the environment where it will be used. A set intended for a hot expedition, cold mountain route, dungeon or boss should be checked under those conditions before you dismantle the old set.
- Reserve rare materials for confirmed upgrades. If an Epic or cultural recipe is expensive, compare its complete stat package with the armor you already own and verify that the bonus supports your build.
In the Enhanced version, official patch notes describe crafting, repair and dye actions that can draw on resources in your inventory, from followers or from nearby clan-owned sources. The exact interaction and eligibility should still be confirmed in the current interface.
Strength-build armor
A strength character should begin by looking for strength or strength-weapon bonuses. These can improve the damage profile of the weapons the build already uses, making them more valuable than a modest increase in raw armor.
After identifying the strength bonus, check three constraints:
- Weight: Heavy armor may suit a close-range fighter, but medium armor can preserve mobility if your encounters involve frequent repositioning.
- Temperature: A strength set without enough heat or cold protection can force an inconvenient armor swap during travel.
- Stamina: Make sure the outfit does not undermine the attacks, blocks or movement actions that define your build.
For a boss fight, favor the version that gives reliable protection and the strength synergy you can actually use. For resource runs, a lighter strength-compatible set may be the better practical choice.
Agility-build armor
Agility builds should prioritize agility or agility-weapon bonuses, then verify that the armor’s weight and climate protection support the route. Light armor is often the first category to examine because it preserves mobility and encumbrance, but medium armor can be justified when a particular set supplies a much better bonus package.

Do not select an agility set solely because it is light. If it has poor temperature protection for your destination, you may spend more time managing environmental damage or changing outfits than benefiting from its lower weight. Compare the entire travel kit, including weapons, tools and supplies.
Armor for exploration, gathering and hauling
Exploration armor has a different success condition from combat armor: it must let you travel far, carry what you collect and survive the climate. Carrying capacity and stamina bonuses can therefore beat a pure armor-rating advantage.
Before a long trip, ask:
- Will the carrying-capacity bonus let you complete the route without returning to base?
- Does the stamina profile leave enough endurance for climbing, sprinting and emergency escapes?
- Does the set resist the heat or cold of every biome on the planned path?
- Is the armor easy enough to replace or repair if the journey goes badly?
A utility set is not automatically the best choice for a dungeon or boss. Carry one deliberately for travel and gathering, and keep a combat-oriented set available when the activity changes.
Choosing armor for PvE, PvP and boss fights
Ordinary PvE
For routine enemy encounters, a balanced set with solid protection and at least one useful attribute or utility bonus is usually easier to live with than an extreme specialist set. Heavy armor is forgiving, while medium armor can reduce travel and stamina costs.
Boss encounters
Boss preparation should emphasize the damage and survival pattern of the encounter. Use the highest-protection option that still lets you perform the required attacks, movement and stamina actions. Temperature resistance matters if the arena or approach route has a harsh climate. Bring a repair plan and avoid testing a completely unfamiliar set for the first time at the boss.
PvP
PvP rewards a more deliberate trade-off because mobility, stamina timing and build-specific damage can matter as much as protection. There is no universal PvP set in the available evidence. Choose the weight class and bonuses that fit your weapon, movement pattern and server rules, then validate the result in controlled fights before committing expensive materials.
Where armor recipes come from
Not every desirable set is obtained in the same way. Separate the route before you plan the craft:
- Basic craftable armor: Unlocked through Armorer and later level-based archetype feats.
- Cultural armor: Unlocked through its relevant feat or obtained through the route associated with that culture; Epic cultural versions require the appropriate endgame feat investment.
- Epic and perfected armor: Available after the level 60 Epic Armors milestone, including Perfected Lining and improved basic armor.
- Dungeon or boss rewards: Some specialized pieces may be tied to encounters rather than ordinary bench crafting.
- Trader or recipe drops: A recipe may need to be found or purchased before the item appears at a station.
- Downloadable-content equipment: Availability can depend on the relevant content entitlement and the current game version.
If a recipe is absent, do not assume the item was removed. Check the feat tree, the item’s acquisition information and the current client description first.
How to compare armor tooltips accurately
Make a simple comparison note for each complete set. Include one line for every relevant property:
- Armor value for each piece and the complete outfit
- Weight and resulting encumbrance
- Strength, agility, vitality, stamina and carrying-capacity bonuses
- Weapon-damage or other combat bonuses
- Heat and cold resistance
- Recipe, feat and material requirements
- How easily the set can be replaced and repaired
Armor value is important, but it has diminishing returns. Once a set already gives adequate protection for the activity, a useful attribute, stamina improvement or carrying-capacity bonus may produce more practical value than another small increase in armor.
Compare pieces at the same quality and enhancement state. Mixing a perfected piece with ordinary armor can make the numbers look better or worse for reasons unrelated to the set’s design. Also check whether a bonus applies to your weapon type or only to a different combat style.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Epic armor and the endgame decision
At level 60, unlock Epic Armors when you are ready to spend the required feat points. Perfected Lining and improved basic armor create an endgame alternative to replacing your entire wardrobe with a specialized cultural set. Epic cultural armor can also be unlocked with feat points.
Evaluate the upgrade as a complete package:
- Compare the perfected or Epic armor with the exact set you currently use.
- Check whether the improved bonus supports your primary attribute or weapon.
- Confirm heat and cold resistance for the places you actually play.
- Calculate the practical cost of materials, feat points and replacement pieces.
- Inspect the live tooltip after every major patch before crafting multiple sets.
The level 60 unlock is an opportunity to optimize, not an instruction to wear the heaviest or rarest armor available.
Enhanced version: why old armor guides can be wrong
Funcom’s updates record Conan Exiles Enhanced as a major Unreal Engine 5 upgrade released on May 5, 2026. The update includes visual and quality-of-life changes, and official patch notes describe changes to how crafting, repair and dye actions use available resources.
The official material does not provide a complete, permanent armor-stat table. Third-party lists may therefore be useful for finding candidates, but their exact armor values, bonuses, recipe costs and rankings should be treated as version-sensitive. Open the current item tooltip and recipe in your own client before relying on any number.
Common armor mistakes and fixes
Choosing by armor rating alone
Problem: The set has impressive protection but no useful build or utility bonuses.
Fix: Compare attribute, weapon-damage, stamina, carrying-capacity and climate effects alongside armor.
Ignoring weight until after crafting
Problem: The outfit leaves too little capacity for tools, food and loot or changes stamina behavior in a way that breaks your combat routine.
Best Value
Fix: Equip the complete set before discarding your previous armor and test it with the inventory you normally carry.

Problem: High protection does not compensate for inadequate heat or cold resistance during travel.
Fix: Keep a climate-appropriate set or select armor with resistance that covers the entire route.
Spending feat points too early
Problem: You invest in an expensive specialist recipe just before another level-based archetype becomes available.
Fix: Use dependable Armorer gear while leveling and reserve major investments for a bonus you will keep using.
Trusting an old stat table
Problem: A guide written before Enhanced or a later patch lists values that no longer match your client.
Fix: Treat the guide as a way to identify candidates, then verify every current tooltip, recipe and material requirement in-game.
Assuming a missing recipe is a bug
Problem: The item does not appear at the bench.
Fix: Recheck the required feat, level, content entitlement and acquisition route. Some recipes are obtained through drops, traders, dungeons or bosses rather than the standard Armorer tree.
A practical pre-craft checklist
- What activity will this set support: leveling, PvE, PvP, hauling, exploration or a boss?
- Which weight class fits the stamina and encumbrance you can tolerate?
- Does the set improve your primary attribute or weapon type?
- Does it provide enough heat and cold resistance for the destination?
- How much carrying capacity remains after equipping it?
- Is the recipe available at your current level and through a feat you can afford?
- Are the materials common enough to replace the set after a death?
- Have you confirmed the current tooltip since the Enhanced update?
If the answers point in different directions, keep separate outfits: one for travel and hauling, one for combat and one for extreme climates. The best armor is the set that solves the immediate problem without creating a larger stamina, weight or temperature problem.
