CoreProtect is a logging and anti-griefing plugin for Minecraft servers. It records supported activity so authorized staff can determine what happened, where it happened, and which account was involved. A safe workflow is to install the build matching your server software, verify logging, investigate with the narrowest lookup possible, preview every rollback, and keep independent world backups. CoreProtect improves investigation and recovery; it does not replace backups, permission design, or moderation policy.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What CoreProtect does—and what it cannot guarantee
CoreProtect stores records of supported server activity, such as block changes and other actions exposed to the plugin. Moderators can query those records by player, time, location, action, and material. The project describes the plugin as a data-logging and anti-griefing tool designed to let authorized staff investigate what happened, where it happened, and which account was involved.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLogging is not the same as a backup. A log may identify an action without containing every piece of world data needed to reconstruct a damaged build. CoreProtect also cannot promise coverage for every plugin, custom mechanic, or type of lost data. Keep routine world backups, protect the server and database with appropriate permissions, and define a moderation process before granting destructive commands.
Prepare the server before installation
Installation changes the running server, so capture enough information to reproduce or undo the change.

- Record the exact Minecraft version, server-software build, Java runtime, and current plugin list.
- Make a current world backup. If CoreProtect uses an external database on your installation, take a consistent database snapshot as well.
- Confirm that the server is using a supported environment. The official installation guidance covers Paper, Spigot, Purpur, Bukkit-compatible servers, and Folia. Compatibility is build-specific, so check the current release documentation rather than relying on a version number copied from an older guide.
- Plan who will receive read-only investigation access and who, if anyone, may perform rollbacks, restores, purges, or configuration changes.
Do not replace the backup with a CoreProtect database export. The backup is your independent recovery path if a rollback is too broad, a database is damaged, or the relevant activity was never logged.
Install CoreProtect and verify that it is logging
- Download the appropriate build. Use the CoreProtect release that matches the server software and Minecraft version you recorded. Avoid copying an arbitrary JAR from an unrelated version.
- Stop or restart the server through its normal administrative process. Place the CoreProtect JAR in the server’s
pluginsdirectory, then restart using the same controlled process you use for other plugins. - Check the load status. In game or from the console, run
/co status. A successful response confirms that the plugin loaded and can report its current status. - Test inspection. Run
/co inspectto toggle the inspector. Make one harmless, reversible block change in a test area, then inspect that location. Toggle the inspector off when finished. - Test a short lookup. Run a small query such as
/co lookup t:5m r:5in the test area. New activity should appear in the results. A test is safer than waiting for a real incident to discover that logging, permissions, or database connectivity is wrong. - Record the result. Note the CoreProtect build, server build, database choice, and the date of verification in your administration log. This makes later troubleshooting and migrations much easier.
If /co status fails, first check the server startup log for a plugin-load error, a Java incompatibility, or a conflicting plugin. Confirm that the JAR is in the active server’s plugins directory, not an unused test directory, and verify that the command sender has the status permission or operator access.
Set permissions by responsibility
Give staff the smallest permission set that lets them do their job. The documented CoreProtect permissions are separate, so investigation access does not have to include destructive recovery.
| Permission | Purpose | Typical assignment |
|---|---|---|
coreprotect.inspect |
Toggle the location inspector | Moderators investigating a specific block |
coreprotect.lookup |
Search logged activity | Moderators and administrators |
coreprotect.rollback |
Apply a rollback to logged changes | Trusted senior staff only |
coreprotect.restore |
Restore changes affected by a corresponding rollback | Trusted senior staff who can correct recovery work |
coreprotect.purge |
Delete old log data | Database or server administrators |
coreprotect.reload |
Reload CoreProtect configuration | Administrators who maintain configuration |
coreprotect.status |
View plugin status | Operators and support staff |
coreprotect.* |
All documented CoreProtect commands | Use sparingly; it defaults to operator access |
Do not hand out coreprotect.* merely because it is convenient. A moderator who only needs to identify a griefer generally needs inspect and lookup, not rollback, restore, purge, or reload. Review permission inheritance in your permissions manager and test each role with a non-operator account.
Investigate a damaged area without changing it
Start with the least destructive command and increase the scope only when the evidence requires it. This approach reduces false matches and prevents an overbroad recovery command.

1. Inspect the affected location
Run /co inspect, then click or otherwise inspect the affected block. The inspector is useful when you are standing at a known location and need a quick history of changes there. Turn it off after collecting the information so later clicks do not create confusion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Run a narrow lookup
Use /co lookup with the smallest useful time window and radius. For example:
/co lookup u:Player t:1h r:20
This asks for activity by the named player during the previous hour within a radius of 20 around the command location. Replace Player with the account you are investigating and choose a time window that matches the incident rather than searching the entire history.
3. Add filters only when they remove ambiguity
CoreProtect documents these lookup filters:
u:<user>— limit results to a player.t:<time>— limit the age or period of the search.r:<radius>— limit the area around your position.a:<action>— limit the type of recorded action.i:<include>— include only specified materials or entries.e:<exclude>— omit specified materials or entries.
Begin with a player, time, and radius. Add an action or material filter only if the initial result is too broad. Widen one variable at a time and note each change, so you know which query produced the evidence.
4. Interpret the result before acting
Compare the returned account, timestamps, location, action, and material with the report and with neighboring blocks. A single result may be part of a larger build, a legitimate staff action, or a normal mechanic. Check containers and adjacent structures rather than assuming that every nearby change came from the suspected player. Save the exact lookup scope and relevant coordinates in the incident record.

Rollback safely after confirming the scope
A rollback changes the world, so treat it as a recovery operation rather than an investigation command. Preview the exact scope first:
/co rollback u:Player t:30m r:15 #preview
Review the returned count and locations. If the preview includes unrelated construction, expand or narrow the filters before applying anything. If the scope is correct, run the same command without #preview:
/co rollback u:Player t:30m r:15
Use the same user, time, radius, action, and material filters from the approved preview. Do not reconstruct a command from memory after discussing it with other staff; copy the recorded scope into the change log.
Verify the result
After applying the rollback:
- Inspect representative blocks inside the reported area.
- Check containers and nearby builds for unintended changes.
- Review the server log for errors or warnings.
- Ask a second authorized staff member to confirm that the affected area matches the approved scope.
- Keep the pre-change world backup untouched until the result is accepted.
A rollback may not reconstruct information that was never logged or that no longer exists in the available history. If the result is incomplete, stop making additional broad rollbacks and use the independent world backup or a more targeted recovery plan.

/co restore u:Player t:30m r:15
Use the exact scope recorded for the rollback. Restore is not a replacement for a world backup, especially when original data is missing or later edits have changed the same blocks.
CoreProtect documents /co undo as an alias that reverts a rollback or restore through the opposite action. If a recovery command was wrong, stop further edits, identify the original operation, and use the documented undo behavior with the recorded scope. Verify the area and server log again before allowing normal building to continue.
Control database growth with retention rules
Logs are useful only while they remain manageable and available. The documented purge example is:
/co purge t:30d
This removes data older than 30 days. In-game and console executions have different minimum purge ages, so check the current release documentation before scheduling or automating cleanup. A purge permanently removes historical log records; it does not remove the corresponding blocks from the world and cannot be treated as a backup.
Choose retention based on your incident-response needs. A short period reduces storage and query history, while a longer period preserves evidence for delayed reports. Record the chosen period, the person approving it, and the date of each purge. Take the appropriate backup or database snapshot before major retention changes, and verify status afterward.

Choose and maintain a database backend
CoreProtect configuration documentation describes DuckDB and ClickHouse backends. The DuckDB JDBC driver is downloaded automatically as a plugin library, while the ClickHouse JDBC driver is packaged inside CoreProtect. The backend choice affects administration, migration, storage, and backup procedures, so follow the configuration documentation for the release you are running rather than copying settings from another server.

| Which backend is active? | Read the CoreProtect configuration and confirm it in the plugin status or startup log. |
| How is the driver supplied? | DuckDB’s JDBC driver is downloaded as a plugin library; ClickHouse’s driver is packaged in CoreProtect. |
| How will it be backed up? | Use a consistent database snapshot or the backend’s supported backup method, in addition to world backups. |
| What happens during migration? | Schedule an administrative change, back up first, follow the documented migration steps, and verify lookups afterward. |
Do not edit database files while the server is actively writing unless the backend documentation explicitly supports that procedure. An inconsistent copy can be unusable even when the original server appears healthy.
Use per-world configuration deliberately
CoreProtect supports per-world YAML files that can alter logging behavior. The documentation gives disabling entity-death rollback logging in a specific Nether world as an example. A world-specific setting should have a written reason: reducing irrelevant records, matching a gameplay rule, or limiting a known source of noise.
Before changing a YAML file, back up the configuration, record the affected world and setting, and follow the exact key names and indentation required by the current documentation. Reload only after checking the file for syntax errors, then run /co status and a harmless test in that world. Remember that disabling a category reduces what can be investigated later.
Common failure modes and recovery steps
The command is unknown or denied
- Run
/co statusand inspect the startup log to confirm that CoreProtect loaded. - Check that the command sender has the specific permission, such as
coreprotect.lookup, or operator access. - Test with the server console to distinguish a permission problem from a plugin-load problem.
A lookup returns no activity
- Confirm that you are querying the correct world and location.
- Widen the time window or radius one step at a time.
- Remove unnecessary action, include, or exclude filters.
- Check that the test change occurred after installation and that the server log shows no database errors.
- Consider whether the action is supported or whether a world-specific configuration disabled that logging category.
The preview is larger than expected
Do not remove #preview until the scope is correct. Narrow the player, time, radius, action, or material filters, preview again, and compare the returned locations with the incident report.
A rollback produced an unexpected result
Stop additional changes, preserve the original backup, and record the exact command and time. Inspect representative blocks and the server log. If the history is sufficient, use the corresponding restore or documented undo process with the original scope. If it is not sufficient, recover from the independent world backup rather than stacking increasingly broad rollbacks.
The database is growing too quickly
Review retention, purge only data older than the approved threshold, and investigate noisy logging or world-specific settings. Confirm the backend’s storage and backup procedure before changing configuration. Never delete database files as a substitute for the documented purge command.
Recommended administration routine
- After installation: verify status, inspector output, and a short lookup in a test area.
- For every incident: record the report, coordinates, world, suspected account, lookup filters, and timestamps.
- Before every rollback: run and review a preview, obtain the required approval, and preserve the backup.
- After recovery: inspect blocks and containers, review logs, and document the accepted result.
- Before purge or migration: back up the world and database as applicable, record the change, and verify status afterward.
- Regularly: audit permission assignments and remove destructive access from staff who no longer need it.
Bottom line
Use CoreProtect as a controlled evidence and recovery system: install the compatible build, verify that new actions are logged, investigate with /co inspect and narrowly scoped /co lookup commands, preview every rollback, and retain independent backups. Separate read-only investigation permissions from rollback, restore, purge, and reload access. With that discipline, CoreProtect can make grief investigations and targeted recovery far safer without pretending to be a complete backup system.
