Computer Hardware and Software: How Physical Parts Bring Programs to Life

Hardware is a computer’s physical equipment; software is the programs and data that direct it. Learn how processing, memory, storage, input, output, and communication fit together.

Hardware is the physical equipment in a computer system; software is the programs and associated data that tell that equipment what to do. Calling hardware the “physical summary of software” is a metaphor, not a formal technical definition: software instructions are represented and carried out through physical states in hardware.

What is computer hardware?

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines hardware as “the material physical components of a system.” In a computer, that includes parts inside the device and equipment connected to it. The term describes what a component is, while categories such as processing or input describe what it does. NIST’s glossary attributes this definition to CNSSI 4009-2022 from IETF RFC 4949 Version 2.

What are the main parts of a computer?

A useful way to understand a computer is to group its hardware by function. These categories are not a checklist of separate boxes: a single device can perform more than one role, and components vary across computers and form factors.

Function What it does Examples
Processing Executes program instructions and performs operations on data. Central processing unit (CPU)
Working memory Holds instructions and data for current use while the processor works. Main memory, commonly called RAM
Persistent storage Keeps programs and data for later use, including when the computer is off. Disk or other storage drive
Input Receives actions or signals and converts them into a form the system can process. Keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, scanner
Output Presents the computer’s results in a form people or other systems can use. Display, printer, speakers
Communication Exchanges data with other devices or networks. Network interface card, router, switch

These roles can be internal or provided by attached peripherals. A touchscreen, for example, can provide both input and output; a laptop combines many functions in one enclosure, while a desktop may use separate external devices. OpenStax explains the organization of computer systems by functional roles, and IBM’s overview offers examples of common components.

What is the difference between hardware and software?

Hardware is the physical substrate; software is the programs and associated data stored in and executed by that substrate. NIST’s software glossary defines software in terms of programs and associated data. Neither category does the whole job by itself: hardware performs operations, while software supplies instructions and data that give those operations a task.

The distinction is useful, but not always a simple divide between a physical object and something wholly abstract. A program’s instructions are represented in physical states in memory and storage, and hardware acts on those representations when a program runs. The program remains software; the chips and devices that store or process it are hardware.

How does hardware work with software?

A typical program moves through a simple path: it is kept in persistent storage, loaded into main memory for active use, and its instructions are fetched and executed by the processor. Input and output hardware connect that activity to people and the outside world.

  1. Storage keeps the program: A program and its data can remain on disk or another persistent storage device when the computer is off.
  2. Memory holds active work: When the program is used, instructions and related data are placed in main memory, where the processor can work with them.
  3. The processor executes instructions: The CPU fetches instructions and carries out their operations on data. This is an introductory model; it does not describe every detail of modern processor design.
  4. Input and output bridge the system: Input devices convert actions or signals into the computer’s internal representation. Output devices present results in a form people or other systems can interpret.
  5. Communication hardware connects devices: Network components move data between the computer and other systems.

OpenStax describes the CPU’s instruction-fetch and execution role, the distinction between main memory and disk storage, and the conversion performed by input and output. The Open University glossary likewise distinguishes main memory used for execution from secondary memory that preserves programs and data after power is off.

Where does firmware fit?

Firmware is a boundary case in the software–hardware distinction. NIST describes firmware as programs and data stored in hardware, typically ROM or PROM, that cannot be dynamically written or modified during program execution. That qualification is about modification during execution; it should not be read as a claim that all modern firmware is impossible to update. The exact meaning depends on context, so NIST advises consulting the source documents associated with its glossary definitions.

Why the distinction matters

Thinking in terms of roles helps explain how a computer works without treating it as a single mysterious box. Storage retains a program, memory makes current instructions and data available, processing executes those instructions, and input, output, and communication connect the system to its users and environment. A computer’s capabilities and performance depend on how its parts work together and on the task—not on one universal “most important” component.
