Component Library Quality Gates: What to Check Before Scaling

A component library can compile while its exports, docs, tests, accessibility evidence, or platform behavior drift. Here’s why we set quality gates before growing to 20 components.

We built quality gates before expanding our component library to 20 because a green build and a growing catalog do not prove that each component is ready for consumers. A component can compile while its package export, public types, documentation, behavior tests, accessibility evidence, or platform support quietly falls behind. Our goal was to define and check a shared standard of completeness and evidence while the catalog was still small enough to audit.

This is an engineering rationale, not a claim that 20 is a universal threshold or that the gates produced a measured reduction in defects. The number was a bounded target: enough variety to test the system, but still manageable to review.

Why put gates in place before adding components?

Every component creates more than an implementation file. A reusable component may also need public types and package exports, tests, representative Storybook stories, website and API documentation, examples, accessibility evidence, metadata, design tokens, and platform-specific validation. As the catalog grows, each of those surfaces becomes another place for drift.

That means component count alone cannot answer the questions consumers care about: Can they import the component from the package root? Does its documented API match what ships? Is its behavior tested beyond the default case? Are its accessibility semantics appropriate for its runtime?

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

We wanted a shared definition of done before a large backlog of uneven components accumulated. The rationale is similar to adding database constraints before invalid data spreads: agree on the invariant early, then make violations visible instead of relying on a later cleanup.

What a successful build does—and does not—prove

A build is necessary: it checks that code can be transformed into output. But build success alone may not show that the intended component is exported from the package root, that public props are represented correctly, or that consumer-visible behavior has evidence behind it.

  • A component may compile without being available through the library’s public entry point.
  • Its types may not accurately express the supported props or states.
  • A test file may exist but cover only a happy path.
  • A story may show only the default state, and documentation may be stale.
  • Accessibility semantics or interaction behavior may be wrong for a particular runtime.

For a component library, the public export and type contract are part of the product boundary. A green build answers a narrower question: whether the code builds, not whether the full consumer-facing contract is intact.

Completeness and quality evidence are separate checks

We split the problem into two questions because “is the surface present?” and “does it support the contract?” are not interchangeable.

Layer Question Example check
Completeness Do the surfaces required by the declared contract exist? If metadata declares React Native support, is there a native implementation? Are required types, exports, tests, stories, docs, accessibility surfaces, and tokens present?
Quality evidence Do those surfaces credibly cover important declared behavior? For a form component, is there evidence for controlled and uncontrolled use, disabled, required, and invalid states—not just a test file or story?

Derive completeness from canonical metadata

Rather than maintain a separate informal checklist for every component, describe platforms and requirements in canonical metadata, derive the expected surfaces from that declaration, and compare them with the repository. The check can then fail deterministically when a required file or surface is missing. If a component declares React Native support, for example, the repository should not silently lack a native implementation.

Ask for evidence, not just files

Presence is only a starting point. A test can exist while skipping important states; a story can exist while showing only the default; docs can be present while describing an outdated API. Quality gates should connect declared behavior to evidence for the cases that matter, while leaving a human to judge whether the evidence is persuasive and the examples are clear.

Why 20 components is a useful boundary, not a magic number

There is nothing special about 20 as a universal milestone. It was a bounded catalog target: broad enough to exercise different kinds of component work, but small enough to audit as a whole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful audit set can include primitives, form controls, compound APIs, navigation, overlays, two runtimes, controlled state, keyboard interactions, focus management, tokens, and icons. The point is not to hit a count; it is to test whether the library’s definition of done works across meaningful variation before the catalog becomes harder to reason about.

How to validate Web and Native without demanding identical code

Web and React Native can share a product responsibility without sharing implementation details or evidence. We should ask whether each runtime fulfills the same responsibility credibly, not whether its source code looks alike.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • On the web, accessibility evidence may involve semantic HTML, roles, and ARIA. React Native uses platform properties such as accessibilityRole, accessibilityLabel, accessibilityState, and accessibilityHint.
  • Keyboard behavior and focus management need evidence appropriate to the runtime.
  • Gestures and overlays require runtime-specific validation; an overlay may use a portal on the web and a Modal or another native mechanism.

Shared intent is useful, but it does not make accessibility, keyboard, focus, gesture, or overlay behavior interchangeable. Each runtime needs evidence in its own terms.

Keep checks small, specific, and diagnosable

One opaque “validate everything” command can make it difficult to understand what failed. We prefer distinct checks for distinct questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Does the code build?
  • Can consumers access the intended public API?
  • Are required repository surfaces complete?
  • Does the evidence cover important declared behavior?
  • Is documentation structurally present and current enough to support the API?
  • Does runtime behavior work on the relevant platform?

A useful failure identifies the component, rule, platform, and missing or insufficient evidence, rather than printing a vague failure message. Once a quality rule represents a stable engineering judgment, its result should be reusable: structured findings can support CI, review summaries, issue routing, and history instead of being trapped in log text.

What should be automated—and what still needs judgment?

Automate repeated, deterministic invariants. A checker can establish that a props contract exists, that a declared platform has an implementation, or that expected accessibility properties and story states are present. It cannot fully decide whether each prop is well designed, whether an experience is accessible to every real user, or whether an example explains the component well.

That boundary is the point of the gates: reduce repetitive checking so reviewers can focus on component-specific choices that require judgment. When several components fail the same check, look for a reusable cause—such as generator templates, metadata, test contracts, documentation generation, or CI—rather than treating every failure as an isolated component problem.

What these gates are meant to buy

The intended benefit is cheaper trust, not a quantified promise. A passing build remains useful, but confidence in a reusable component also depends on its public API, required repository surfaces, behavior evidence, documentation, accessibility, and runtime-specific validation. Defining those expectations early makes gaps easier to spot while the catalog is still bounded.
