Track competitor prices by collecting verified, comparable offers on a schedule, recording the context that changes what customers actually pay, and reviewing movement over time. Then decide whether to act using your own demand and margin data—not by automatically matching a rival’s cut.
Set the scope before collecting prices
Start with the competitors, products, channels, and markets that can affect your customers’ choices. Separate direct competitors from indirect substitutes, and prioritize high-impact products rather than giving every SKU equal attention.

- Competitors: Include businesses customers realistically compare with you, not every seller in the category.
- Products: Focus first on important or high-visibility SKUs.
- Channels and markets: Decide whether you are tracking a retailer website, marketplace, store, or a particular geographic market. Keep observations from different channels or markets distinct when their offers differ.
- Cadence: Choose a schedule that fits how quickly relevant prices change and how quickly your team can make a considered decision.
A vendor-authored pricing guide illustrates weekly checks of 500 grocery items for a key-value-item strategy; that is an example, not a universal recommended assortment or cadence. A small, stable selection may be manageable with recurring manual checks. Larger assortments spanning markets or channels may justify automated collection and analysis, provided the data is validated.

A price comparison is useful only if the offers being compared are sufficiently alike. Use identical products where possible. When comparing variants or substitutes, record why you consider them comparable rather than treating a software match as automatically correct.

Record the full observation
For each observation, capture enough detail to verify it and interpret later changes. A simple spreadsheet can work for a limited set of products.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Product and match basis | Product identifier and variant; note whether it is an exact match or a documented substitute. |
| Competitor and channel | Seller, sales channel, and market or geography being observed. |
| Observed price | Displayed price and currency, plus promotion details or visible eligibility conditions. |
| Availability | Whether the product appeared available when checked. |
| Delivery cost | Shipping or delivery charge when shown and relevant to the customer’s total. |
| Observation time | Date and time of the check so the record can be judged for freshness. |
| Source and notes | Page or source checked and any ambiguity, such as a difficult variant match or a price requiring a condition. |
Competera describes tracking price, promotions, stock, shipping, channels, and markets as capabilities of its software. These are vendor descriptions, not independently verified performance claims. Whatever method you use, verify a sample against the live source and flag stale, failed, or ambiguous observations before using them.
Analyze gaps and price changes over time
Monitoring tells you what was listed at a particular moment. Analysis asks how your offer compares with selected competitors and whether the difference is persistent, temporary, or tied to a promotion or availability change.
- Calculate the price gap for each relevant matched offer using a consistent basis, such as displayed price or total price including delivery.
- Review repeated observations rather than relying on a single check. Look for recurring patterns and distinguish them from one-off promotions.
- Segment results by product, competitor, channel, and market so unlike offers do not get blended together.
- Investigate records where the match, freshness, promotion, or availability is uncertain before drawing conclusions.
Keep the underlying observations alongside any summary. That makes it possible to revisit a conclusion if a product match was wrong or the offer changed before a decision was made.
Decide whether to change your price
A competitor’s reduction is not, by itself, a reason to reduce yours. Consider your own demand response and margin before changing a price. Blindly matching a cut without accounting for demand elasticity can erode margin.

- Ask whether the competitor’s price is a reliable, current, comparable offer.
- Consider whether the difference is likely to matter to your customers and whether it is temporary.
- Evaluate the potential effect on demand and margin using your own business information.
- Choose an action—or no action—and define how you will assess the outcome.
After a pricing change, review what happened and update the competitor set, product priorities, or observation schedule when the market or your business needs change. Do not treat a price-monitoring feed as an automatic pricing decision.
Manual checks or software?
Manual tracking offers a straightforward way to begin with a focused assortment and a manageable schedule. Software-assisted collection can be more practical when the set spans many products, competitors, channels, or markets, but automation does not remove the need to check quality.

| Consideration | Manual tracking | Software-assisted tracking |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A limited product and competitor list with a cadence a person can maintain. | A larger assortment or multiple markets and channels where manual collection is burdensome. |
| Setup and upkeep | Requires a consistent spreadsheet or record and people to perform checks. | Requires configuring coverage and reviewing how the system handles stale or failed observations. |
| Match confidence | Can be checked directly during each observation, but consistency depends on the process. | Product-matching features may help, but matches still need validation. |
| What to verify | Price, offer conditions, availability, delivery, market, channel, and observation time. | Competitor and channel coverage, update cadence, match validation, promotion and stock context, alerts, export or integration options, and handling of stale or failed records. |
Competera describes competitor monitoring capabilities, while NIQ describes a related analytics approach that combines retailer point-of-sale data with market pricing, promotions, and shopper behavior. These are vendor descriptions, not independent tool assessments. The latter category is relevant when the question extends from “what is listed?” to “how do shoppers respond?”

In the United States, the FTC says businesses generally must set prices independently and not agree with competitors to fix prices. The FTC distinguishes ordinary price matching from an agreement with a competitor. Keep monitoring independent; do not use it to coordinate prices with rivals. This is U.S.-specific guidance, not global legal advice; consult qualified counsel about a particular situation.
The FTC also says below-cost pricing is not automatically unlawful. Its predatory-pricing guidance describes concern about a strategy to eliminate competitors where there is a dangerous probability of gaining monopoly power and later recouping losses. Do not assume that every below-cost competitor offer is illegal.

Public competitor-price monitoring is also distinct from setting individualized prices based on personal information. In a January 17, 2025 press release, the FTC reported initial staff findings that personal information and behavior, location, time, and sales channel could be inputs to individualized pricing. The release said the study was ongoing and described hypothetical examples; it does not establish that every retailer uses such practices.

If you need screenshots of public offer pages as part of a manual verification workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The service supports PNG, JPEG, or WebP screenshots and PDF output; screenshot settings include full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, waiting conditions, request blocking, cookies and headers, caching, async jobs, and bulk capture. A screenshot is an evidence-capture aid, not a substitute for recording offer context or validating a product match.
Free includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I lower my price whenever a competitor does?
No. First verify that the offer is current and comparable, then consider your own demand response and margin before deciding.
Is manual competitor price tracking enough?
It can be sufficient for a limited assortment when recurring checks are manageable. Larger, multi-market or multi-channel assortments may benefit from automation, with match quality and freshness still reviewed.
Does a competitor selling below cost mean the price is illegal?
No. FTC guidance says below-cost pricing is not automatically unlawful; its predatory-pricing concern involves additional conditions, including a dangerous probability of achieving monopoly power and recouping losses.
