Ask it to extract the same decision-relevant details from each document separately, with page references and “Not found” labels, and only then make a comparison. This “extract first, compare second” workflow can organize a tedious review—but it cannot verify the documents for you.
Why compare documents in two stages?
“Which of these is better?” leaves the standard undefined. Better might mean a lower total cost, broader coverage, fewer exclusions, more flexible cancellation, or less risk of extra charges. A model can produce a confident-sounding verdict without knowing which trade-offs matter to you.

The staged approach, described in a Tom’s Guide article, first asks ChatGPT to read each document independently and extract matching fields. It then asks for a side-by-side comparison and a short list of differences or unclear terms to investigate. The prompt is a workflow suggestion, not a special ChatGPT feature, and the article does not establish that it reduces errors. Read the Tom’s Guide article.

- Choose the fields before you upload. Use the same list for both documents. Depending on what you are deciding, that might include total cost, deductibles or other charges, included services or coverage, exclusions, cancellation, renewal, and conditions that can increase what you pay.
- Attach both documents and request separate extractions first. Ask ChatGPT to review each file on its own before it compares them. Require a page reference for every detail and ask it to mark a detail “Not found” if the document does not explicitly state it.
- Request the comparison only after the extractions. Have it put the matching fields in a side-by-side table, then flag differences and unclear terms that deserve follow-up. Asking for five items can be a useful prompt, but five is not a validated or exhaustive number.
- Check the original pages. Open each cited page and verify important prices, deadlines, exclusions, renewal conditions, and cancellation rules. Look beyond the main text at tables, footnotes, appendices, definitions, and cross-references.
- Make the decision yourself. Treat the output as an index to what you should inspect, not as a recommendation or a substitute for reading the controlling document.

This template follows the staged method; tailor the fields to the decision and the documents you have:

Read each attached document independently before comparing them. For each one, extract [the fields that matter to my decision]. Cite the page for every detail. If a detail is not explicitly stated, write “Not found” rather than inferring or guessing. After both extractions, make a side-by-side comparison table and list differences or unclear terms I should investigate. Do not choose for me.
For a subscription, fields could include recurring price, introductory price and when it ends, renewal, cancellation, fees, and service exclusions. For insurance, consider the premium, deductible, covered services, exclusions, cancellation, renewal, and conditions that may change out-of-pocket costs. These are starting points, not a claim that every document contains those terms.

“Not found” means the model did not identify an explicit statement in its extraction; it does not prove the term is absent from the whole agreement. If a detail is consequential, ask for the relevant sentence or heading as well as the page number, then locate it in the original.
Can ChatGPT compare two PDFs?
OpenAI’s Help Center says ChatGPT can work with uploaded files for tasks such as summarizing and comparing documents. It lists DOCX, PDF, and TXT among supported document formats, but availability can depend on the plan, account and workspace settings, region, client, and selected model. Check the current guidance for your account before relying on a particular upload workflow: File Uploads FAQ and supported file types.

The File Uploads FAQ currently states a limit of 2 million tokens per text or document file. That is a current service limit, not a permanent guarantee. Handling of images embedded in PDFs can vary by plan and feature, so do not assume the model can interpret a scanned page or complex visual layout correctly. For a scan, table, or diagram that matters, inspect the page yourself and verify what the model extracted.
What to verify before relying on the comparison
- Amounts and conditions: Check every quoted price, deductible, fee, deadline, and trigger for additional costs against the document.
- Exceptions and buried terms: Inspect tables, footnotes, appendices, definitions, and cross-references; a short summary may miss a qualification located elsewhere.
- Page references and quotations: Confirm that the cited page contains the claimed detail. Page numbering may differ between a PDF viewer and printed page labels.
- Missing information: Treat “Not found” as a cue to search the source, not as proof that the term does not exist.
- High-stakes decisions: For legal, insurance, or financial consequences, use the document itself and seek appropriately qualified advice when needed.
OpenAI also describes file uploads as useful for synthesis, transformation, and extraction, with examples including comparing documents and finding references in a PDF. Review privacy controls before uploading sensitive documents
A contract or policy may contain names, addresses, account details, or other sensitive information. Before uploading it, check the settings that apply to your account and workspace. OpenAI says content from eligible individual services, including files, may be used to improve models depending on the user’s settings; the “Improve the model for everyone” control can be turned off.
