Statewide North Carolina crash records identify several frequently recorded driving circumstances, but they do not provide a Raleigh-specific ranking. Here is what the numbers show and how to reduce risk.

Statewide North Carolina crash records most often list failure to reduce speed, inattention, failure to yield, and improper lane changes among recorded contributing circumstances. Those are statewide figures—not a ranking of causes in Raleigh. The city’s safety plan reports 185 fatal crashes and 905 serious-injury crashes from 2019 through 2023, but the City material reviewed does not break those crashes down by driver mistake.

What are the most common causes of car accidents in Raleigh, NC?

A Raleigh-specific ranking is not established by the figures available here. The City of Raleigh’s Safe Streets for All page reports 185 fatal crashes and 905 serious-injury crashes in the city from 2019 to 2023. Those are severity totals, not counts of particular driver errors. The City says its safety analysis will identify high-injury and high-risk areas.

Recorded circumstance North Carolina count, 2024
Failure to reduce speed 68,359
Inattention 45,293
Failure to yield right of way 44,383
Improper lane change 17,647

These are recorded circumstances across statewide reported crashes, not necessarily unique crashes or proof of a sole cause. The table contains 535,695 total circumstances and lists “no contributing circumstances indicated” separately; multiple circumstances may be associated with a crash. It also separates failure to reduce speed from exceeding the posted limit, and lists distracted-driving subcategories apart from inattention. Do not add those categories together as if they were distinct crashes.

Which driving mistakes appear in the statewide records?

Not slowing enough for conditions

“Failure to reduce speed” is the most frequently recorded specific circumstance in the 2024 statewide table. It does not mean only driving above the posted limit: it can include failing to slow sufficiently for traffic, a curve, weather, visibility, or road conditions. Speed leaves less time and distance to respond. Ease off early when conditions change rather than waiting until braking is urgent.

Inattention and distraction

Inattention is a major recorded statewide circumstance, while the table separately lists electronic communication devices, other electronic devices, other in-vehicle distractions, and external distractions. Set navigation and audio before moving, keep the phone out of your hand, and avoid eating or reaching for objects while driving.

The North Carolina Department of Insurance, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reported that distracted driving was attributed to 3,208 U.S. deaths in 2024. The department cautioned that reported figures likely understate the problem. That is a national figure, not a Raleigh count. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said, “You might think glancing at your phone for a few seconds isn’t a big deal while driving, but those few seconds can lead to a lifetime of consequences.”

Failing to yield

Failure to yield right of way is another high-count circumstance in the statewide records. Take particular care before turning left across traffic or entering a road from a side street or driveway. Check for pedestrians and cyclists as well as vehicles before crossing or turning, and do not assume another road user will stop to make room.

Unsafe lane changes and lane positioning

North Carolina’s 2024 table records improper lane changes, use of an improper lane, and disregarded road markings as separate circumstances. Signal before moving, check mirrors and blind spots, and change lanes only when there is adequate space. Avoid last-second moves near exits, and include people walking or biking in your scan, especially when turning or crossing a bike lane.

Ignoring signals or signs and following too closely

The statewide table also records disregarded traffic signals, disregarded stop signs, and following too closely. Stop fully where required, obey signal indications, and leave enough room to react if traffic ahead slows or stops. These are statewide categories; they do not establish which errors are most frequent in Raleigh.

Driving impaired

Raleigh’s Vision Zero page names distracted driving, intoxicated driving, and speeding as leading crash causes nationally. State crash records also include alcohol and drug use as contributing-circumstance categories. A recorded circumstance is not, by itself, proof that impairment caused a crash, and the cited sources do not provide a Raleigh-specific impairment ranking. Plan a sober ride rather than driving after alcohol or drug use.

Does speeding cause the most crashes in Raleigh?

The available figures do not establish that. NCDOT’s 2024 statewide table puts failure to reduce speed at the top of its specific circumstance counts, but that category is broader than exceeding the posted speed limit, and it is not a Raleigh-only count. Raleigh’s local crash totals and statewide circumstance counts measure different things over different periods, so they cannot be used to make a city ranking.

How can I find crash information for a Raleigh road or intersection?

NCDOT says crash data starts with law-enforcement reports and is sent to the statewide DMV database. It says location-specific statistics can be requested for an intersection or road segment and a time period. The database reflects reported crashes; many crashes go unreported. To make a Raleigh-only claim about which mistakes rank highest, the relevant location-specific records would need to be requested and analyzed.

How can I avoid a car accident in Raleigh?

  • Adjust speed early for traffic, curves, weather, visibility, and road conditions.
  • Set directions and audio before setting off; do not handle a phone while driving.
  • Yield carefully when turning or entering a road, checking for pedestrians and cyclists as well as motor vehicles.
  • Signal, check mirrors and blind spots, and wait for a safe opening before changing lanes.
  • Obey signs and signals, leave following distance, and arrange a sober ride if impaired.

These are practical ways to reduce risk, not findings from a Raleigh-specific study of which interventions prevent the most crashes. The City adopted its Comprehensive Safety Action Plan in April 2026, with a goal of reducing fatal and serious-injury crashes by 50 percent by 2040; that citywide effort is distinct from individual driving choices.
