How to Find a Downloaded File and Check Where It Came From in Windows 11

To find where a downloaded file is saved, open File Explorer and select Downloads from Home or the left navigation pane. To check where a file came from, look in the app’s download history; Windows file properties may show a security warning about its origin, but Microsoft does not document that view as a reliable way to recover the full website address.

Find the Downloads folder in File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start, or press Windows logo key + E.
  2. Select Downloads in Home or the left navigation pane, then look for the file. Microsoft documents Downloads as a known folder available from these locations by default starting with Windows 11 version 22H2. Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance describes these locations.

If Downloads is not visible in the navigation pane, check Home or use File Explorer search. A folder may have been unpinned or the view customized. To restore an unpinned known folder, open Home, select the Up arrow beside the address bar, right-click Downloads, and choose Pin to Quick access.

Check the download location set in Microsoft Edge

Edge’s configured save folder tells you where downloads are directed; it does not by itself identify the origin of an already downloaded file.

  1. In Edge, select Settings and more (…).
  2. Choose Settings > Downloads.
  3. Read the folder path under Location. To change the destination, select Change in the Location area.

To choose a destination separately for future downloads, turn on Edge’s option to ask where to save each file. These steps and labels are specific to Microsoft Edge; other browsers and download apps have their own settings. Microsoft’s Edge download settings guidance covers the location option.

Check where a particular file came from

Look in the downloading app’s history

Open the browser or app that downloaded the file and check its download history. In Edge, the download history lists files downloaded from the web. Clearing that history removes the list, but does not delete the downloaded files. Microsoft’s Edge history guidance explains this distinction.

Use file properties only as a security clue

In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Properties. On the General tab, look near the bottom for a security message indicating that Windows has marked the file as blocked. This can signal that Windows treats the file as internet-originated or otherwise untrusted; it is not proof of the exact site or sender, and the cited Microsoft guidance does not describe Properties as a reliable way to retrieve a full originating URL. Microsoft’s Attachment Manager guidance discusses this security information. Only unblock a file if you trust its source.

If the file is not in Downloads

  • Search in File Explorer, including Home, for the file name or a distinctive part of it.
  • Check the download history and save-location setting in the browser or app that performed the download.
  • Consider whether the destination was changed, the file was moved afterward, or the folder’s navigation entry was unpinned.
