Command-Line Interface (CLI): What It Is and How It Works

A command-line interface lets you interact with a computer or program by typing commands. Learn how a terminal, shell and command-line tool fit together.

A command-line interface (CLI) is a way to interact with a computer or program by typing text commands and reading text responses. In a typical setup, a terminal displays the interaction, a shell interprets what you type, and a command-line tool performs a specific task.

What is a command-line interface?

A CLI is an interface based on text commands rather than selecting actions solely through graphical controls such as buttons and menus. You enter a command, the computer or program processes it, and the result is usually returned as text.

The term describes the interaction style, not one particular app. Microsoft Learn describes a command shell as an interactive command-line interface for managing a computer. A program can also provide its own command interface for a particular service or task.

What is the difference between a terminal and a shell?

These terms refer to different roles in a common command-line setup, even though people often use them loosely as synonyms.

Term Role Example
CLI The text-based way of interacting with a computer or program. Entering commands and receiving text output.
Terminal The interface or host that accepts and displays text input and output. Windows Terminal or Terminal on macOS.
Shell The command interpreter that reads and evaluates input, then runs a shell command or invokes another program. PowerShell, Windows Command Shell, Bash or zsh.
Command-line tool A program launched from a shell, usually to perform a specific task. Azure CLI for administering Azure resources.

In a typical command-line session, the terminal provides the visible text interaction, while the shell processes what you enter. A terminal application can host one or more shells. Apple describes Terminal on Mac as an app for communicating with macOS through a CLI; the shell receives commands and scripts that tell it what to do.

How does a CLI work?

  1. You type a command into a terminal’s text interface.
  2. The shell reads and evaluates the input.
  3. The shell runs a shell command or invokes a program, sometimes passing work to the operating system.
  4. The result is returned as text for display in the terminal.

For example, in many Unix-like shells, typing pwd displays the current working directory. This example is not universal: available commands vary by shell and operating system.

What is a shell used for?

A shell can accept commands interactively or run commands saved in a file as a script. Depending on the shell, it may also provide programming features such as variables, flow control and functions. Bash, for example, includes interactive features such as command history, aliases, command-line editing and job control.

Shells are commonly used to manage files, configure settings and query information. Saving commands in scripts can make a sequence of steps repeatable, though the commands still need to suit the shell and system where they run.

What is a command-line tool?

A command-line tool is an application that you run from a shell to carry out a particular task or work with a particular service. Microsoft’s Azure CLI, for instance, is a cross-platform tool for administering Azure resources. It can be used interactively or through scripts, from a shell such as cmd.exe or Bash launched in a terminal.

The distinction is useful: the shell interprets the command, while the tool does the specialized work. Microsoft also lists OpenSSH for Windows as an example of a command-line application.

When should you use a CLI instead of a graphical interface?

Neither interface is universally better. Choose based on the task and how you need to do it:

  • Check whether the task is supported: the needed action may be available in one interface but not another.
  • Consider repetition or automation: commands and scripts can make repeatable sequences easier to run consistently.
  • Consider discoverability: graphical controls make visible options easier to browse; a CLI requires knowing or finding the relevant command.
  • Factor in familiarity: a command interface may be efficient for someone comfortable with its commands, while a graphical interface may be more approachable for someone who is not.

These are practical decision criteria, not a measured performance ranking. The cited documentation does not establish a universal speed or productivity advantage for CLI over GUI.
