Colour-Changing Graphene Skin Reveals Hidden Damage

A 2017 laboratory graphene coating used structural colour to reveal deformation and micrometre-scale cracks. It remains a research demonstration, not a proven field system.

A graphene coating reported in 2017 changed colour as it was deformed or developed tiny cracks, offering a possible way to make early material damage visible. It was a laboratory research demonstration—not a product or a field-tested monitoring system.

What the colour-changing coating showed

A team led by Shanglin Gao at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research created the coating by arranging semi-transparent graphene nanoplatelets in carefully aligned, parallel layers on a glass fibre. In the Chemistry World report, the undamaged coating appeared red, turned yellow under deformation, and green when cracks formed at the micrometre scale. Chemistry World, 6 April 2017

Why graphene changes colour

The colour is structural, not the result of a chemical pigment. Microscopic structures can make reflected light waves interfere with one another; the interference affects the colour people see. Stress compresses and flattens the aligned graphene layers, changing their geometry and the resulting interference. As the structure changes, so does the apparent colour.

Why visible damage matters—and what remains unproven

Structural failure can begin with small cracks and deformations that are difficult to spot. Gao described the challenge: “Structural failure usually starts with tiny cracks and deformations,” and “Generally, these microscale cracks are hard to detect.” A colour shift could make such changes easier to notice, potentially giving inspectors a visual warning.

XFNANO Single-Layer Graphene Oxide GO Powder, ~99%, 500 mg
  • SINGLE-LAYER GO POWDER — XFNANO XF002-2 graphene oxide supplied as a fine brown freeze-dried powder in a 500 mg package for research and industrial formulation evaluation.
  • DEFINED SHEET DIMENSIONS — Listed lateral size of 0.5-5 μm, thickness of 0.8-1.2 nm and single-layer ratio of approximately 99%.
  • STATED PURITY — Approximately 99% purity based on EDS testing. Review current batch documentation when release-specific analytical data is required.
  • OXYGEN-CONTAINING SURFACE — Graphene oxide contains hydroxyl, carboxyl and epoxy groups that support functionalization studies and dispersion evaluation in water and compatible polar solvents.
  • MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT APPLICATIONS — Suitable for evaluating polymer nanocomposite films, sensor functional layers, electrode formulations, adsorption media, separation materials, catalysis and solid-phase extraction systems.

The report proposed buildings and vehicles as possible applications, not as places where the coating had been deployed. It does not establish field validation, service life, environmental durability, or commercialization. Gao said that “Real-world applications, however, will first require much more knowledge about the properties and behaviour of the coating.”

Michael Bartl, an expert in micro- and nanophotonics at the University of California, Berkeley, described the broader potential: “Such materials have enormous potential as non-destructive, integrated sensors for monitoring the health of composites used in buildings, cars and airplanes.” That is a statement about potential, not evidence of a working monitoring system in those settings. Aolidsive Thin Film Pressure Sensor 138mm Position Sensing Resistor
  • [OPEN CIRCUIT INITIAL STATE] The thin film pressure sensor remains in an open circuit state when no external pressure is applied to its sensing area, ensuring precise and reliable activation only when needed. Once a pressure of 20g to 50g is applied, the sensor triggers instantly, making it ideal for responsive position sensing and force detection in various electronic applications.
  • [LINEAR RESISTANCE CHANGE] As the pressure position moves from the sensor interface end to the far end, the resistance gradually increases in a linear manner, ranging from 0KΩ to approximately 100KΩ. This linear output provides accurate position feedback, allowing users to easily integrate it into potentiometer circuits, gear switches, and other location sensing scenarios with predictable performance.
  • [SIMPLE CIRCUIT PRINCIPLE] The circuit principle is straightforward and user friendly, functioning as a flexible sliding resistor with an initial open circuit state. This design simplifies wiring and reduces setup complexity, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced engineers who need a reliable thin film force sensor for position sensing and control applications.
  • [DURABLE FLEXIBLE MATERIAL] Constructed from polyester film, highly conductive material, graphene pressure sensitive layer, and adhesive, this position sensor is lightweight, soft, and can bend to a certain extent. It withstands over 100,000 normal flexible presses, ensuring long lasting durability and consistent performance even in demanding environments.
  • [SOLDERABLE METAL TERMINAL] The thin film pressure sensor features a metal terminal interface that resists oxidation and can be directly soldered, providing a secure and stable electrical connection. This sensor is perfect for position sensing, potentiometer, gear switch, and other location sensing uses, offering versatility and ease of integration into custom electronic projects.

How it differs from later graphene sensor research

Later graphene-based sensing work should not be confused with Gao’s 2017 coating. A 2025 wearable photonic-electric skin combines reduced graphene oxide and PDMS with silica photonic crystals and a PEGPEA film. It reports optical and electrical responses to stress, along with joint-movement monitoring. It is a separate research prototype, not evidence that the 2017 coating became a product.
