A 2011 report illustrated the process with PMMA domains in polystyrene; the broader research paper described a demonstration using self-assembled block-copolymer micelles. The two material systems are related examples, not the same experiment.
What is collective osmotic shock?
It is a way to create pores in an ordered, heterogeneous material by making one component swell inside another. The material contains a minor component arranged as separate domains within a matrix. If the domains can be selectively degraded and solvated while the matrix can deform, solvent uptake causes the domains to expand. When expansion breaks through the intervening walls, the resulting fractures form a regular, interconnected porous structure.

The paper abstract describes the resulting structures as regular and bicontinuous: the pore space and the remaining solid each form connected networks. “Collective” refers to the coordinated effect of swelling at many sites, rather than a single expanding inclusion making an isolated hole. The paper, “Collective osmotic shock in ordered materials,” appeared in Nature Materials in 2012.

How does the reported polymer example make pores?
Chemistry World’s 2011 account used polystyrene containing small spheres of poly(methyl methacrylate), or PMMA, to explain the process. The sequence is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Break down the PMMA. Ultraviolet exposure degrades the PMMA into oligomers, which form small domains within the polystyrene.
- Let acid enter the matrix. Acetic acid can dissolve PMMA, but it cannot directly reach the domains. Instead, it diffuses through the polystyrene by osmosis.
- Swelling ruptures the walls. As acid enters and swells the domains, they expand until the walls around them give way.
- Leave a porous polystyrene structure. The ruptures link the resulting spaces into nanopores.
The mechanism depends on the contrast between the two components: the solvent can travel through the matrix, the selected domains respond to it, and the matrix yields as those domains swell. Chemistry World’s report describes the PMMA–polystyrene example and its reported demonstrations.
Which material system did the paper demonstrate?
The PMMA-in-polystyrene system is the press report’s illustrative example. The paper abstract identifies self-assembled block-copolymer micelles as the system used to demonstrate the broader concept. Both descriptions concern selective degradation and solvent-driven swelling in an ordered material, but they should not be collapsed into a claim that the paper’s demonstration used the press report’s exact polymer recipe.

What could the resulting nanopores do?
Water treatment
The 2011 report says the nanoporous polystyrene could remove dye from water, presenting it as a possible filter. That is a reported demonstration, not evidence here of a commercial filtration product or of performance against every contaminant.

Making a different material from the pore pattern
The report proposed filling the pores with another substance and then dissolving away the polystyrene, in effect using it as a “plaster cast.” This was presented as a possible extension of the method, not as an established industrial product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is collective osmotic shock an industrial process?
The available reporting establishes research demonstrations and possible application areas, but does not establish whether continuous industrial processing or commercial deployment followed. In the 2011 report, researcher Easan Sivaniah said, “With optimisation this could be applied to continuous industrial processes, enhancing the applicability of the technique.” The conditional phrasing matters: scale-up was a prospect that would require optimization, not a reported outcome. The report also quotes nanoporous-materials expert Martin Attfield calling the approach “elegant and novel.”
