Its author, Subhadip Guchhait, says it runs a local Gemma 2 model through Ollama and was built to help a college friend explain technical concepts aloud. The project description and one practice anecdote do not establish that its grading is reliable or that it improves interview or hiring outcomes.
What ColdMock is intended to do
Guchhait describes building ColdMock after a college friend who could solve coding problems reportedly struggled to explain systems concepts in preparation for campus placements. The project is framed as a zero-cost, offline way to practice technical explanations aloud, rather than as a hiring platform or physical interview product. The motivation for building it is the author’s account, not an independently measured comparison of interview tools.
In the reported flow, ColdMock presents a backend or systems scenario. The user answers aloud through a laptop microphone, and the system is designed to submit the response after five seconds of silence. It then generates a follow-up based on that answer. At the end, it produces a scorecard with strengths, blind spots, and a hiring verdict; blank or one-word answers are said to fail automatically. These are claims in the project account, not behavior independently reproduced or tested.
What the author says is under the hood
| Component | Reported role |
|---|---|
| Google Gemma 2 (2B), run locally through Ollama | Generates responses and follow-up questions, according to the project description. |
| FastAPI backend | Handles interview state and grading prompts. |
| Vanilla HTML and JavaScript frontend with Tailwind CSS | Provides the browser interface. |
| Browser Web Speech API | Supports speech interaction in the browser. |
The author says the system can run offline and that audio and interview notes stay on the laptop. The project account does not include an independent security audit, a data-flow inspection, or a supported-platform matrix, so those privacy and compatibility claims should be understood as the author’s description rather than verified guarantees.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the database-lock drill shows—and what it does not
Guchhait recounts one session in which a friend practicing a database-lock scenario suggested using read replicas. ColdMock reportedly followed up by asking about replication lag. The friend is quoted by Guchhait as saying, “That exact question tripped me up in an interview last month.”
The anecdote illustrates the intended interaction: a follow-up can probe a consequence of the user’s proposed solution rather than simply advance through a fixed list. It does not show how consistently the system asks relevant questions, whether its feedback is accurate, or whether practice improves performance. One reported session also cannot establish that a generated hiring verdict predicts a recruiter’s decision.

How to interpret fluency and AI-generated evaluation
A 2023 study in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication examined 134 valid student responses in a mock job interview. Participants were told their performance would be evaluated by a human recruiter, plain AI, or AI presented with a humanlike interface. Students in the AI-evaluation condition reported higher uncertainty and lower social presence than those told a human would evaluate them. The study tested participants’ beliefs about who was evaluating them; it did not test ColdMock or an autonomous system that generates adaptive follow-ups.
The authors found that articulation rate was higher under AI evaluation, but that difference was significant only at the 0.10 level. Most other measured speech-fluency differences were not significant at the conventional 0.05 level. They also caution that faster speech and fewer pauses may reflect anxiety or insufficient attention to the listener. Fluency alone is not a measure of interview performance, so a smoother or faster answer should not be treated as proof of a stronger answer.

What prospective users can reasonably conclude
- ColdMock is presented as a local voice-practice project for spoken technical drills, with adaptive follow-ups and an end-of-session scorecard.
- The implementation, offline behavior, silence-based submission, and scorecard are described by the author but have not been independently established in the cited project account.
- The available anecdote demonstrates an example of a follow-up, not grading accuracy, learning gains, or employment outcomes.
- The student study offers context about how AI evaluation can feel to interviewees; it is not an assessment of ColdMock’s quality or effectiveness.
Accordingly, ColdMock is best understood as a described practice-tool concept, not a validated evaluator. The project’s claims are reported in Guchhait’s project article; the broader interview context comes from the 2023 Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication study.
