CogniRunner 3.3.0: It No Longer Waits for a Transition

CogniRunner 3.3.0 adds event-driven and scheduled automation to transition-based Jira Cloud rules, with filters, cron jobs, and a Rules REST API.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CogniRunner 3.3.0 adds event listeners and scheduled jobs alongside its existing transition-based Jira automation. Jira Cloud administrators can now start work when selected Jira events occur or run it on a cron schedule, rather than requiring every rule to wait for a workflow transition.

What changed in CogniRunner 3.3.0?

Atlassian Marketplace lists CogniRunner as a Jira Cloud app from LeanZero SRL and gives September 7, 2026 as the release date for version 3.3.0. The listing describes it as an AI workflow agent and says the release adds event listeners and scheduled jobs to transition-based rules. Atlassian Marketplace listing

The publisher’s release explainer labels the release 1.2.0 in the app’s own release notes. That is a separate numbering system from the Marketplace version 3.3.0; the two numbers should not be read as competing claims about the same version label. LeanZero release explainer

Choose a trigger that matches the work

Mode Trigger and scope Best fit
Workflow transition A rule runs in connection with a Jira workflow transition. Work that belongs at a defined status change or workflow step.
Event listener A selected Jira, Jira Software, or Jira Service Management event triggers work; filters can narrow which events qualify. Reacting to activity that is not necessarily a workflow transition.
Scheduled job A cron schedule runs once or against issues within a JQL scope. Recurring or one-time work that should run at a chosen time, including checks over a set of issues.

The Marketplace listing says listeners cover 68 Jira, Jira Software, and Jira Service Management events. It also describes filters and an optional plain-English AI condition, with work performed through code steps or an AI agent constrained by an action allow-list. Atlassian Marketplace listing

How listeners respond to Jira events

A listener starts from an event rather than waiting for a transition. The Marketplace listing describes event filters and simulation; the publisher’s explainer adds filter options such as project, issue type, JQL, changed fields, and comment regular expressions. These allow an administrator to make a listener narrower than “run for every event of this type.” LeanZero release explainer

Event-driven automation requires more care than simply selecting a trigger. An automation action may itself generate another event, and delivery can be repeated. LeanZero’s explainer describes a default safeguard against app-generated events, run brakes, and a separate event-claim mechanism intended to stop a redelivered event from executing twice. These are distinct controls: loop brakes limit repeated runs, while a claim addresses duplicate delivery. The explainer reports a maximum of 120 listener executions and 30 listener runs per issue within a five-minute window; treat these as product-specific behavior described by the publisher, not Jira platform limits or independently verified guarantees. The publisher also says Forge event delivery may take up to about three minutes. A listener should therefore not assume that the issue still has exactly the same state it had when the event was generated. The issue-viewed event is called out as high volume, so it warrants particular restraint. Listener work runs as the app rather than as an individual user, making the app’s permissions and allowed actions important when choosing what the automation can do. LeanZero release explainer

How scheduled jobs work

The Marketplace listing says scheduled jobs use cron and can run once or for issues matched by a JQL scope. It also says per-issue outcomes appear in history, which gives administrators a way to inspect what happened for individual issues. Atlassian Marketplace listing

LeanZero’s explainer describes a five-field cron format, IANA time zones, and a five-minute scheduler tick. It reports a 100-issue cap for a job’s JQL scope. It also says missed ticks are replayed at most for the previous hour and only once, and that daylight-saving changes affect scheduling. These are app-specific implementation details in the publisher’s account, not general guarantees about Jira schedules; validate timing behavior against the current app documentation before relying on it for time-critical work. Provision listeners and jobs through the Rules REST API

Administrators can provision listeners and scheduled jobs through the Rules REST API as JSON, according to the Marketplace listing. LeanZero’s explainer reports bearer-token authentication, batches of up to 100, and partial updates. It says the API does not provision workflow rules, which remain attached through Jira’s workflow API. Those API details are vendor-reported implementation information, so confirm the current endpoint and request format in the app’s documentation before building deployment scripts. Test the behavior and account for its limits

The publisher describes simulation as a way to check matching and execution without consuming real-run brakes, event claims, or statistics. It does not test actual event delivery, the brakes, or self-event suppression. A successful simulation can help verify the rule’s logic, but it does not prove that a live event will arrive on time or that loop safeguards will behave as expected. LeanZero release explainer

The explainer also gives a 105-second listener-run budget. Because the detailed operational figures come from the publisher’s release explanation rather than independent testing, use them as guidance about the described implementation, and verify current limits before designing automations around them. When to use each mode

  • Choose a transition rule when the workflow status change is the event that should govern the work.
  • Choose a listener when a particular Jira event should trigger a response, and use filters to limit matching events. Consider delayed delivery, repeated events, and app permissions when evaluating its effects.
  • Choose a scheduled job when work should run at a set time or periodically across a JQL-defined group, rather than immediately in response to an event.
  • Choose deterministic code or AI condition/action steps according to whether the task needs fixed logic or an AI agent’s judgment, keeping the action allow-list aligned with the work.

CogniRunner is a Jira Cloud app, not a physical product. The Marketplace listing identifies it as paid via Atlassian and offers a trial; availability and commercial terms should be checked on the listing. Atlassian Marketplace listing
