“Stream disconnected before completion” means Codex stopped receiving a response before it observed the result as complete. The message alone does not identify whether the cause is a temporary interruption, a particular conversation, or a custom-provider setup—and there is no confirmed universal fix. Retry once, save the request ID if shown, then check whether the problem is limited to one thread or appears across Codex.
What the error tells you—and what it does not
The message describes an incomplete response stream; it is not a diagnosis of your Wi-Fi, an OpenAI service incident, a specific transport failure, or a custom-provider incompatibility. Reports describe the wording in Codex desktop, CLI, and the VS Code extension, under different circumstances. Those cases should not be treated as one confirmed cause. Public Codex issue reports include individual examples, not a vendor-confirmed root-cause analysis.

A user report captured desktop wording that says to retry and, if the error persists, contact the Help Center with the request ID. If your error shows an ID, use your own—not the example ID in another person’s report. The report documenting that wording does not establish what caused the interruption.
What to do first
- Retry once and preserve the request ID. If the same error returns, note the approximate time, the Codex surface (desktop, CLI, or extension), its version, your operating system, and whether the failure is repeatable.
- Check where it happens. Record whether the error affects one existing or resumed thread, new conversations too, or more than one Codex surface. One desktop report described a new session working initially while follow-up prompts often failed; that is an observed pattern, not evidence that a new thread fixes the cause. See the individual report.
- Use a fresh conversation only as a comparison. If useful local work is at stake, preserve it first. A CLI user reported a failure limited to an older or resumed thread, so a fresh thread may help identify whether the symptom is thread-specific. It is not guaranteed to restore the old context or finish interrupted work. See the CLI report.
- Note whether Codex uses a custom provider. If you configured an OpenAI-compatible Responses endpoint, include that fact and relevant provider settings after removing secrets. A reporter said direct streaming calls to the provider succeeded while Codex failed; the reporter’s proposed explanation involving runtime or session parsing was a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause. See the custom-provider report.
- Contact support if it persists. Follow the error’s own instruction and include the request ID when available. Add the time, platform and version, affected surface, thread-specific pattern, any partial work, and whether a custom provider is configured. Never post API keys or other credentials.
How to interpret common patterns
| What you observe | What it may help distinguish | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| One older or resumed thread fails, while a new session initially works | A thread- or session-specific symptom | This has been reported, but it is not a reliable repair. Individual report. |
| WebSocket retries or handshake fail, then an HTTPS fallback is tried | The transport path in that particular setup | One short fallback test completed; no general workaround or supported HTTPS-only setting is established. Individual report. |
| A custom OpenAI-compatible Responses provider is configured | A provider-integration case rather than a standard hosted setup | One reporter’s direct provider tests succeeded while Codex failed; the suspected Codex parsing or runtime cause remains unconfirmed. Individual report. |
| Reinstalling, resetting, or changing firewall settings does not help | A reason not to assume the installation or firewall is the cause | One Windows 11 user reported those attempts did not solve the problem. That does not predict what will happen on another system. Individual report. |
Changes that are not established fixes
Do not treat reinstalling Codex, changing firewall rules, switching transports, or buying network hardware as a guaranteed remedy. Reports are inconsistent and individual: one Windows 11 user said reinstall/reset and firewall changes did not help; another user’s short HTTPS fallback test completed, while longer tasks later failed. Neither case establishes what will fix your setup.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to include in a useful report
- Your request ID, if the error displayed one.
- Approximate time of failure and whether a retry reproduced it.
- Codex surface, version, and operating system.
- Whether the issue affects one resumed thread, new threads, or multiple surfaces.
- Whether the task had already produced partial work.
- Whether you use a custom provider, with credentials and secrets removed from any configuration details.
These details help describe the circumstances without claiming a cause. The available public reports are individual accounts and do not establish how common the error is or identify a maintainer-confirmed universal fix.
