The practical difference is the handoff: a human courier brings an order to the agreed delivery point, while a Coco robot carries it in a locked compartment and directs the customer to retrieve it using app instructions. Where robot delivery is offered, the restaurant loads the robot outside; the customer—not a courier—collects the food from it. Building entry and unit-door delivery depend on the local service instructions and are not guaranteed universally.
How a Coco robot delivery works
- Check whether it is offered. At checkout, the delivery app may show a robot option if the restaurant, order, address, platform, and local rules qualify. In Hoboken’s municipal pilot, both the business and customer can decline the option. Coco says it works with platforms including Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Wolt, but participation does not mean every order or address is eligible. - The restaurant loads the robot. Staff put the order in its compartment and close the lid. Uber Eats describes this as an outside handoff to the robot rather than to a courier. That is the robot workflow; it does not mean restaurant staff must personally meet a human courier for every conventional order. Uber Eats’ workflow explanation describes the platform-specific process.
- Follow the order in the app. In the Hoboken pilot, customers track the order through the app and receive pickup instructions when the robot arrives. The exact alerts and controls can vary by platform.
- Retrieve the order. Uber Eats says its robot compartments are securely locked and the intended customer unlocks the compartment with their phone. Follow the instructions in the app you used to place the order rather than assuming every Coco deployment uses an identical unlock sequence.
What changes with a human courier
With a human courier, the order is handed to a person for the trip and delivered according to the available instructions for that order. With a Coco robot, the restaurant loads the compartment, and the customer is directed to meet or access the robot and retrieve the order. That changes who handles the restaurant-to-customer handoff and what the customer does at arrival; it does not, by itself, establish which method is faster, cheaper, or better for food quality.

Does a Coco robot enter an apartment building or reach your door?
Do not assume either that it will come to your unit door or that it can never enter a building. The cited service descriptions focus on sidewalk delivery, outside handoffs, and app-directed pickup; they do not establish a universal Coco rule for apartment entry, elevators, or delivery to individual units. Check the location-specific instructions in the app for where to meet the robot and collect the order. The Hoboken pilot and Coco–Deliveroo UK announcement do not support a broader promise about building access.
Availability and oversight depend on the place
Robot delivery is not a universal checkout option
Eligibility can depend on the delivery platform, participating restaurant, order, address, and local rules. DoorDash and Coco announced a US rollout for eligible customers in Los Angeles and Chicago in 2025. Their announcement reported more than 100,000 deliveries for DoorDash customers during the initial pilot phase and nearly 600 participating merchants in those cities; these are company-reported rollout figures, not an independent audit. DoorDash’s announcement does not establish current eligibility for any particular checkout.

Local rollouts and operating rules can change
Coco and Deliveroo announced a phased UK launch beginning in Canary Wharf in October 2026, with Milton Keynes, Leeds, Stockton-on-Tees, and Nottingham among planned locations. The announcement, issued October 5, 2026, describes planned deployments aligned with local regulations and location-specific speed and routing policies; it is not proof that service was already live in every named place. “Autonomous” does not mean no human oversight
Coco’s community page says robots are remotely piloted by trained, vetted human operators, while Hoboken says robots in its pilot operate under continuous remote supervision so operators can intervene. Separately, Coco’s February 2026 announcement describes Coco 2 as a next-generation autonomous robot and a shift from human-guided robotics toward full autonomy. These descriptions refer to different product and deployment contexts; they do not establish one control mode for every Coco robot everywhere. What to check before choosing robot delivery
- Confirm that the robot option is available for this restaurant, order, and address at checkout.
- Watch the app for route updates and arrival instructions.
- Check where the app says to meet the robot and how it says to retrieve the order, especially if you live in a building with controlled entry.
There is no sound general head-to-head evidence in these sources for robot-versus-human delivery speed, price, food quality, or courier earnings. Coco’s claim that Coco 2 can deliver up to 50 percent faster compares it with Coco’s prior robot generation, not with human couriers. Coco’s product announcement makes that distinction.
