Coaxial vs HDMI: Which Connection Should You Use for a TV?

Coaxial carries antenna or compatible cable-TV signals to a tuner; HDMI connects compatible devices to a TV for digital audio and video. Many setups use both.

Use coaxial for an antenna or compatible cable-TV feed going into a TV’s antenna input. Use HDMI to connect a compatible set-top box, console, streaming player, or other device to the TV for digital audio and video. Many setups use both: coaxial brings in the broadcast or provider signal, and HDMI carries output from a tuner or box to the screen.

What each connection is for

Coaxial: antenna or cable-TV signal into a tuner

A coaxial cable carries an RF signal from an antenna or compatible cable-TV service to a TV’s antenna/RF input, where the TV’s tuner can receive it. The FCC’s historical converter-box guide shows the same basic port relationship: the coaxial lead connects to the TV’s “Antenna in” port. FCC converter-box guide.

HDMI: digital audio and video between devices

HDMI connects compatible consumer electronics to a TV or display, typically carrying both digital video and audio. It is the usual link from a set-top box, converter, game console, or media player to the TV when both devices have compatible HDMI ports. HDMI Licensing Administrator overview.

Which one should you use?

What you are connecting Connection to use What to check
Antenna to TV Coaxial to the TV’s antenna/RF input Confirm the TV has an antenna input and follow its instructions to scan for channels.
Compatible cable-TV feed to TV Coaxial to the TV or provider equipment, as directed by the service provider Current service arrangements vary; follow your provider’s setup instructions.
Set-top box, converter, console, or media player to TV HDMI, if both devices have compatible ports Use the source device’s HDMI output and the TV’s HDMI input.
TV to soundbar or receiver for TV audio HDMI ARC/eARC, if both devices support the required feature Use the ports marked ARC or eARC and check both manuals.

The answer depends on the signal path and the ports on both ends—not on a universal ranking of picture quality. A TV receiving an antenna signal and a separate box sending video to the TV are different parts of the setup, so one cable type does not necessarily replace the other.

How coaxial and HDMI can work together

If a tuner or set-top/converter box receives an antenna or provider feed over coaxial, it may send the resulting audio and video to the TV over HDMI. The FCC’s guide illustrates a converter box’s coaxial “Out to TV” connection going to the television’s “Antenna in” port; some equipment can also provide an HDMI connection to the TV. Exact connections depend on the equipment and service, so use the manuals and provider instructions for your setup.

What to check before connecting

  • Identify the source: Is the cable carrying an antenna or cable-TV RF feed, or is it the output of a separate device?
  • Match the ports: Check for an antenna/RF input, HDMI input or output, and any required ARC/eARC port on both devices.
  • Follow the right setup: An antenna connection may require a channel scan using the TV’s setup menu. Menu names and scan steps vary by model and region; consult the TV manual.
  • Check provider requirements: Cable-TV equipment and service arrangements differ, so use the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming the TV connects directly.
  • Confirm audio-return support: For TV sound sent to a soundbar or receiver over HDMI, both devices must support the needed ARC/eARC feature.

Choosing the right HDMI cable

Choose an HDMI cable category that supports the audio and video features required by the specific devices you are connecting. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s overview identifies Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for systems requiring up to 48 Gbps; that specification is a cable capability, not a claim that every TV or source needs it. The overview also says HDMI cable products should carry the official cable name, with packaging showing the cable-name logo and/or appropriate certification label. HDMI cable overview.

A cable cannot add features that the TV or source device does not support. For coaxial, confirm that the connector fits the TV and antenna or provider connection; the sources cited here do not establish a universal coaxial cable grade or length recommendation.

Using HDMI for TV sound

HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) lets a compatible TV send audio back to a compatible receiver or soundbar over an HDMI connection. Use the HDMI ports marked ARC or eARC as specified in the equipment manuals; an ordinary HDMI port may not provide audio return. HDMI’s 1.4b documentation describes ARC, but the features available in a particular setup depend on the connected devices. HDMI 1.4b specification overview.
