UPI is a payment system that moves money between bank accounts through supported apps. Your UPI ID is an address for a payment, the app is where you set up and manage payments, and your UPI PIN authorizes a transaction. You do not need to share your PIN to receive money.
What UPI does—and what it does not do
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) describes UPI as an instant payment system built over IMPS. It enables transfers between bank accounts and payments to merchants; it is not a separate bank account. The money is debited from or credited to the bank account you link in a supported app. NPCI’s UPI overview explains the system.

UPI can be used to send money to another person or pay a merchant. Payments are available around the clock: NPCI’s FAQ says, “All payments are instant and 24/7, regardless of your bank’s working hours.” Availability and transaction rules can still vary by bank, app, and payment circumstances.

| Term | What it does | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Bank account | Holds the money that is debited or credited. | It must be supported by your bank and app, and linked using the mobile number registered with the bank. |
| UPI ID (also called a Virtual Payment Address, or VPA) | Acts as an address so someone can direct a payment to you or a merchant. | You can share this address to receive a payment; it is not a PIN. |
| UPI app | Provides the interface for linking an account, choosing a payment method, authorizing payments, and checking their status. | BHIM is one example; it is not the only UPI app. |
| UPI PIN | Authorizes a payment from your linked bank account when the app asks for it. | Keep it private. It is not needed simply to receive money. |
A UPI ID is one way to address a payment. Depending on the app and bank, you may also be able to pay using a QR code or the recipient’s account number and IFSC. NPCI’s product overview and UPI product information describe supported payment routes.

How to set up UPI
- Choose a supported UPI app. Follow its registration steps to verify your mobile number and link a bank account. BHIM is one available option; exact screens and supported accounts depend on the app and bank.
- Use the mobile number registered with your bank. The number verified in the app should match the number linked to your bank account so the app can find eligible accounts. NPCI describes this setup in its UPI overview.
- Complete the app’s account-linking and PIN steps. Follow the instructions shown by your app and bank. Available setup and PIN-management flows can differ, so use their official guidance if a step is unavailable.
- Check the account shown in the app. If more than one eligible account is linked, make sure you select the intended account before paying.
How to send money
- Open your UPI app and choose its option to pay or send money.
- Select a payment route supported by the app: for example, enter a UPI ID, scan a recipient’s QR code, or use account number and IFSC details.
- Verify the recipient and amount shown in the app before proceeding. Do not rely on a name or payment request alone if the details do not match what you expect.
- Authorize only if the details are correct. Enter your UPI PIN when prompted to approve the payment. A PIN entry authorizes a transaction; it does not merely confirm that you want to receive money.
- Check the transaction status in the app and keep its reference or transaction ID in case you need to contact the bank or app support.
BHIM’s official product page describes transfers by UPI ID or mobile number, QR scanning, account-and-IFSC transfers, linked accounts, and transaction history. Options in other apps may differ.
How receiving payments and collect requests work
To receive a payment, share your UPI ID or display your payment QR code. A sender can then initiate a payment in their app. You do not need to tell them your UPI PIN or enter it to accept an ordinary incoming payment.
Rank #2
A collect request works in the other direction: someone asks you, the payer, to approve a payment in your app. It is not a refund and does not deposit money into your account merely because you enter a PIN. Review the request and its details; reject it if you were not expecting it. NPCI’s FAQ covers collect requests and payment approval.
Keep your UPI PIN private
NPCI’s instruction is direct: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” Its FAQ also says bank customer support will never ask for it. Anyone claiming to be support who asks for your PIN is asking for information that must remain private. Read NPCI’s UPI safety guidance.
Rank #3
- Check the payee name and amount displayed by the app before authorizing.
- Do not enter your PIN to receive money. Entering it can authorize a payment from your account.
- Reject unexpected collect requests rather than approving them to “claim” funds.
- If your phone is lost, urgently block your mobile number and contact your bank or app support. NPCI includes these steps in its UPI guidance.
Limits, optional features, and payment problems
Transaction limits depend on the bank and app
NPCI’s FAQ lists an ordinary UPI transaction limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, with higher ceilings for specified categories. That is an NPCI-stated ceiling, not a promise that your bank or app will allow you to send the full amount. Limits and rules can change; check the current limit shown by your bank or app before relying on a particular amount. NPCI’s FAQ lists the limit and category exceptions.
Tap & Pay is optional
UPI does not require NFC for ordinary app, ID, or QR payments. NFC is relevant only if you choose an optional Tap & Pay feature and have a compatible device and service. NPCI’s UPI product information describes optional features.
If a payment is pending or appears to have failed
Check the transaction status in the app promptly. If your account was debited but the recipient has not received the money, keep the transaction reference and follow the bank or app’s support route. NPCI describes reversals for declined transactions, but a pending transaction can take longer when beneficiary-bank processing is involved; there is no single recovery time or outcome to assume for every bank and app. See NPCI’s guidance on transaction status and reversals.
