CO Desorption on Ruthenium: How the Two Transient States Differ

A 2013 LCLS experiment distinguished weakly adsorbed CO preceding desorption from an earlier hot chemisorbed state on Ru(0001).

The “desorption precursor” is a fleeting state in which carbon monoxide (CO) is weakly adsorbed on a ruthenium surface just before leaving it. In a 2013 experiment, researchers used optical laser pulses to excite CO on Ru(0001), then probed its changing electronic structure with ultrafast soft X-ray spectroscopy at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The measurements distinguished this slower precursor pathway from a separate, earlier hot chemisorbed state.

What the desorption precursor is

CO starts out adsorbed on Ru(0001), a particular surface of ruthenium. After optical excitation, some molecules pass through a transient, weakly adsorbed state before desorbing. “Precursor” describes that intermediate on the route off the surface; it is not a stable, isolated compound or a material that can be collected.

The term “x-ray laser” refers to the LCLS probe used to track the molecular changes. The optical laser supplies the excitation; ultrafast soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy reveal how the adsorbed CO’s occupied and unoccupied electronic states evolve.

How the two transient states differ

The experiment reported two responses that should not be collapsed into a single state. The first is a hot chemisorbed state, where CO remains chemically bound to the surface. The other is the weakly adsorbed precursor that appears later on the route to desorption.

Feature Hot chemisorbed CO Weakly adsorbed precursor CO
Bonding description Still chemisorbed; metal–adsorbate coordination initially increases Weakly adsorbed before desorption
Reported timing after excitation Within the first picosecond Later than two picoseconds
Interpretation Hot-electron-driven vibrational excitation Phonon-mediated transition into the precursor state

These descriptions come from the 2013 spectroscopic work and its conference abstract. Resonant X-ray emission helped select and probe transient populations, making it possible to distinguish the faster hot chemisorbed response from the later precursor pathway. The pathways can coexist; the early state is not simply another name for the precursor.

What the timing does—and does not—establish

The conference abstract places formation of the weakly adsorbed precursor more than two picoseconds after optical excitation, with desorption occurring at longer times. That establishes a sequence, not a precise duration for which the precursor survives. The accessible abstract does not give a specific precursor lifetime, so an exact lifetime should not be inferred from the timing alone.

How later modeling relates to the observation

A 2024 study used neural-network potential-energy-surface modeling to examine photoinduced CO dynamics on Ru(0001). It identified a laser-induced dynamic-trapping state acting as a precursor to desorption and reported that this state does not appear under thermal conditions. This is computational evidence that adds a mechanistic perspective; it is not a replacement for, or a direct replication of, the 2013 spectroscopic observation.

A separate 2022 study examined laser-excited CO/O/Ru(0001), a mixed adsorbate system, and reported a CO-desorption-to-oxidation branching ratio of around 35. That result belongs to that study and surface composition; it is not a rate or general statistic for the 2013 precursor observation.
