To query BitLocker Management events with CMPivot, use its EventLog() entity with the MBAM channel name verified on your current-branch clients, then filter for the event IDs relevant to your question. Microsoft documents CMPivot’s general event-log pattern, but its published examples do not provide a ready-made MBAM query. Treat the query below as a starting template—not a verified drop-in—and confirm the channel string and returned column names in your environment before using results to make operational decisions.
Find the MBAM event channels on a client
On a Configuration Manager client with a BitLocker Management policy, open Windows Event Viewer and navigate to Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → MBAM. The MBAM node contains the Admin and Operational channels. Microsoft’s client event log documentation describes the channels and their event IDs.
Verify the exact channel name available to CMPivot on the clients you intend to query. The channel names in Event Viewer identify where to inspect events, but Microsoft’s CMPivot examples do not establish a guaranteed MBAM channel invocation.
Start with an illustrative CMPivot query
Microsoft documents the general pattern EventLog('Security') | where EventID == 4673 in its CMPivot sample scripts. That example demonstrates querying an event log and filtering by event ID; it is not an MBAM query.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
EventLog('<verified MBAM channel name>')
| where EventID in (2, 41, 42, 43)
| project Device, TimeGenerated, EventID, Message
| order by TimeGenerated desc
Replace the placeholder with the exact channel string accepted by CMPivot on your clients. Check the query editor’s IntelliSense and a trial result for the available properties before relying on TimeGenerated or Message; the documentation does not guarantee those exact output columns for this query. If a projected property is unavailable, inspect the returned columns and adjust the projection, or omit it.
CMPivot is a Configuration Manager utility that queries the real-time state of currently connected devices in a selected collection, using a subset of Kusto Query Language (KQL). See Microsoft’s CMPivot overview for the entity and query model. The results are not a complete historical archive of every device: devices that are not connected when the query runs cannot contribute current results.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Choose event IDs by the troubleshooting question
Do not treat all MBAM events as equivalent. The Admin and Operational channels describe different outcomes and stages. Microsoft’s client event log reference gives these examples:
| Channel | Event ID | Meaning | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Admin | 2 | VolumeEnactmentFailed: an error occurred while applying MBAM policies. |
Investigating policy application failures. The documented examples include a thin-provisioned-storage limitation with used-space-only encryption and an error that the data area is too small. |
| Operational | 1 | VolumeEnactmentSuccessful: BitLocker Management policies were applied successfully. |
Checking for successful policy application. |
| Operational | 3 | TransferStatusDataSuccessful: encryption status data was sent successfully. |
Checking successful status transfer. |
| Operational | 29 | RecoveryKeyEscrowed: the recovery workflow recorded recovery-key escrow. |
Checking for an escrow event. |
| Operational | 30 | RecoveryKeyReset: a recovery key was reset. |
Investigating recovery-key reset activity. |
| Operational | 41 | FailedToEnactEndpointUnreachable: a connection failure to the MBAM Recovery and Hardware service prevented policy application. |
Separating service-connectivity failures from other policy errors. |
| Operational | 42 | FailedToEnactLockedVolume: a locked volume prevented policy application. |
Investigating failures involving a locked volume. |
| Operational | 43 | TransferStatusDataFailedEndpointUnreachable: an endpoint connection failure prevented encryption-status transfer. |
Investigating failed status reporting caused by endpoint connectivity. |
For a focused failure check, keep the event-ID filter narrow and use the channel that owns those events. For success or recovery checks, substitute the relevant documented IDs—for example, 1, 29, or 30—after confirming the channel invocation and output fields. If you need to discover which events are present rather than test a known failure, begin with a broader query on the verified channel and inspect its returned records before narrowing the filter.

Run the query against the right collection
- In the Configuration Manager console, select the device collection whose currently connected clients you want to inspect, then open CMPivot for that collection.
- Enter a query using
EventLog()and the verified MBAM channel string. CMPivot supports a subset of KQL, so validate syntax and properties in its query editor rather than assuming every KQL feature is available. - Run a small, relevant event-ID filter first. Review the results and confirm the device, event ID, timestamp, and message fields are present and correspond to the intended channel.
- Broaden or refine the query only after confirming the output. Interpret the event’s documented meaning and details rather than treating an event ID alone as a complete diagnosis.
Microsoft describes CMPivot as a real-time query utility for connected devices in the selected collection in its CMPivot usage documentation. CMPivot was introduced starting with Configuration Manager version 1806, according to that documentation; current availability and interface details can depend on the installed Configuration Manager environment.

Use the client’s MBAM Admin or Operational channel in Event Viewer when CMPivot does not accept the channel string, the expected fields are absent, or an event needs its full local details. For wider BitLocker event-log context, Microsoft’s BitLocker event logs reference covers the MBAM log family and its component/channel context.
