1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA CMOS image sensor is a semiconductor device that converts light entering a camera into electrical signals. Its array of light-sensitive pixels detects the light, and circuitry on the sensor helps prepare each pixel’s signal for readout.
How does a CMOS image sensor work?
- The lens directs light. Light from the scene passes through the camera lens and reaches the sensor’s pixel array.
- Photodiodes respond to light. Each pixel contains a light-sensitive photodiode that turns the light it receives into electrical charge.
- Pixel circuitry prepares the signal. CMOS circuitry amplifies or otherwise prepares the pixel’s signal for readout. The exact circuit design varies among sensors.
- The camera reads and processes the data. Camera electronics read the signals and process them into image data.
Sony describes an image sensor as an “electronic eye” and explains that CMOS pixels have an amplifier associated with each photodiode in its overview of image-sensor technology. A CMOS sensor does not necessarily produce a finished color photograph by itself: color filters, signal processing and other parts of the camera contribute to the final picture.

What does CMOS mean?
CMOS stands for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor, a semiconductor technology used to build the sensor’s pixel circuitry. In image sensors, the term describes an architecture in which circuitry associated with pixels reads and prepares their signals. CMOS designs can also integrate analog and digital circuits on the same chip, though the details depend on the sensor and camera.

CMOS and CCD are two major image-sensor architectures. Sony’s technical overview describes CMOS as offering speed and power-consumption advantages over CCD, and notes its ability to integrate analog and digital circuitry on a chip. These are general architectural comparisons, not a guarantee that every CMOS sensor is faster, uses less power or produces better images than every CCD sensor. Results depend on the design, generation, operating conditions and camera system.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What do rolling and global shutter mean?
These terms describe how a sensor captures and reads out a frame, not what CMOS means. They do not necessarily refer to a moving mechanical shutter.
- Rolling shutter: The sensor captures or reads rows sequentially. Because different rows represent different instants, fast-moving subjects can appear skewed or distorted.
- Global shutter: The sensor captures the image across the focal plane at once before readout. This avoids rolling-shutter timing distortion; it can also make flash synchronization easier in machine-vision inspection.
Sony explains the two approaches and their effects in its global shutter overview.

What do back-illuminated and stacked sensors mean?
These terms describe sensor construction. They are separate from shutter timing and do not change the basic light-to-signal role of a CMOS sensor.
Back-illuminated (BSI)
In a back-illuminated sensor, the wiring sits behind the light-receiving photodiode layer, reducing how much wiring obstructs incoming light compared with a front-illuminated arrangement. This structure can improve sensitivity, depending on the design as a whole. Sony discusses the construction in its overview of image-sensor technology.

Stacked
A stacked sensor fabricates pixel and circuit sections on separate layers and connects them. Separating the layers gives designers more flexibility to optimize pixels and logic, and can support compact, capable sensors. “Stacked” describes how the sensor is built, not a different way of sensing light. See Sony’s explanation of stacked image sensors.
